About this property

Sanctuary in a 300+ year old restored mill in the countryside. Dog Friendly!

Relax in the scenic Chester County countryside at The Farmhouse Retreat Center, a restored 300+ year old mill (the old mill wheel is still available for viewing), the perfect place to recharge and explore the unique gardens and historic sites nearby. We offer complimentary tickets for 4 to the world-famous Longwood Gardens that are just around the corner. Please advise at the time of booking if you would like to use them with the day and time so reservations can be made.

Our own 7.5 acres includes your own private waterfall and natural pool, walking trails and lovely gardens. Winterthur, Nemours, Mt. Cuba Center and The Laurels are other natural wonders close by, along with the Brandywine Museum, historic Chadds Ford and the Brandywine Battlefield. The borough of Kennett Square is down the road with art galleries, boutiques, gift shops, a brand new library with a special floor only for kids, and restaurants of every cuisine to enjoy. Runners love the 5K and 10K Kennett Run in May, September brings the annual Mushroom Festival, October has the October Brewfest, and the magic of the holiday season is in magnificent display at Longwood Gardens and Winterthur.

The restored mill is your home away from home with its rustic and unique furnishings and original structural elements. The main living room is an open floor plan with a 12 foot, 250 year-old carved wood dining room table, lots of cozy sitting areas, a functioning fireplace, Steinway piano, six string guitar, conga, percussion instruments, books, board games and more. There is a powder room off to the side of the living room.

The renovated kitchen is fully stocked and provides All Clad and Le Creuset cookware for preparing culinary delights. A breakfast table area looks out over the neighboring fields and a large picture window is a lovely place to sit with your morning coffee or tea and appreciate the sights and sounds of the waterfall.

As it was a mill circa 1700 and built into the side of the small hill, the 3 private bedrooms are "downstairs" from the living/dining room space via a wide, split staircase with handrails and a landing, 7 stairs each. (Although when you look out the window facing the front of the house, it looks like you are on the 2nd floor!). Full beds in 2 and 1 with a pair of twin beds, towels in each bedroom. The private bedroom level has a double vanity bathroom, soaking tub, rain shower and handheld shower with antique Spanish tile. Large bath towels, soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, skincare provided. Above the main floor is the loft with 3 additional twin beds, towels provided (no bath in the loft).

Teak furniture outside is perfect for reading a book or for simply enjoying the view of the marsh and woods. One of the two decks has a teak table and chairs, perfect for dining al fresco. There is a wide path alongside the pond and into the woods for wandering and reconnecting with nature. The gardens close by the house provide a bounty of colors from spring to fall and welcome both pollinators and people.

There is parking for up to 8 cars in the large driveway right beside the waterfall. When you arrive you'll come up the stairs detailed with gears from the old mill up to the back deck, take in the marsh, a home to ducks, geese, egrets, songbirds, snapping turtles, (the mill pond has filled in over the past few years, so the canoes do not get used anymore), and then come in through the sliding doors. Guests have access and use to all the areas in the home, the dining, kitchen, great room, sitting areas, decks, grounds, the little library under the stairs, excepting the private suite of the owner.

Other things to note, The Farmhouse has its own well water that is triple purified and tested regularly, and is very healthy! We are also open to special requests and help for planning for special occasions. Small, intimate celebrations are made even more memorable in this one of a kind setting.

We have a friendly rescue cat and dog that live here with Barbara, the founder/owner and caretaker, in their private living space with its own outside entrance as well as inside, with locked door. They are never in the guest rooms and stay in the private area, although Anouk, the cat, loves to welcome guests when they arrive if she is about. Johnny Cash, the rescue dog, is rather introverted and keeps to himself. They welcome your dog to come visit.

Barbara is often out taking care of the gardens and woods or out in the community. With the marsh, waterfall with pool to oversee for safety as well as facilitating small retreats when guests are not here, she does live on site. She is discreetly available at any time for all needs or questions via text. Her goal is to give you your space, privately, to enjoy the retreat center fully.

Our stay at this retreat sanctuary was the perfect experience for our friend's wedding weekend. We were able to access events in PA and Delaware very easily, and the grounds were exquisite. Barbara really embodies the role of host and has crafted such an inviting, welcoming, and calming location. We loved every moment of our stay!

The house is beautiful and clean in a serene setting. There is a lovely path through the woods for a peaceful stroll or you can sit and enjoy the sound of the waterfall. Longwood Gardens is just minutes away. Barbara, the host, is so sweet and accommodating. Truly one of our best VRBO experiences.

Wonderful place for a family gathering

We absolutely loved our stay at the Farmhouse. We rented it for visiting family and it was the perfect location for us to congregate and enjoy each others company. Very unique and excellent central, yet peaceful location. Barbara was a fantastic host with local insights and extremely flexible and accommodating. We will be back!

An oasis of calm

Not only a beautiful location, there is a rejuvenating sense of calm around this place. Barbara is lovely and attentive, Anouk the cat is incredibly friendly, and Johnny Cash the dog, while shy, is a wonderful old pup.

Secret Retreat for a Longwood Gardens visit

This is a tranquil place in a rural setting with surprising access to the local environs (including Longwood Gardens). The owner/caretaker lives onsite, as mentioned in the listing, and this property is also a retreat center. There is quite a bit of room, here, and while there were just four of us visiting Longwood I imagine it would be roomy for a full complement of nine! Do note it is in an old mill -- the loft staircase is steep and narrow, though the automatic lights relieve many worries. The downstairs bedrooms and bath are particularly nice and have a wide, easy staircase. The kitchen is very well-appointed, and the coffee the owner set up for us was quite good. If you're planning on cooking a large number of meals and buying supplies all at once I would recommend discussing with the owner in advance, as the refrigerator is shared. Parking will require care for a larger group, possibly; I doubt nine individual cars would fit (probably should carpool anyway), though with our party two cars fit just fine.

This was truly a sanctuary. The host was wonderful and very accommodating. Her cat was very sweet and a welcome presence. Longwood Gardens is 5 minutes away. Our host has a membership for four people that we used. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect weekend in a perfect house in a perfect setting.

Barbara is a great and interesting host. The converted Mill oozes with old world charm. We were a group of 6 adults plus an infant and had plenty of room. The kitchen nook and dining room table are spectacular, and the living room had plenty of seating. There are enough bedrooms/beds that we didn’t need to use the beds in the loft. Everyone felt their beds were comfortable. There are multiple outdoor sitting areas, a deck off the nook a pond and bubbling brook with a waterfall Barbara also went out of her way and met us at Longwood Gardens (less than a five minute drive) so we could use her guest passes. We will definitely use the property when we are visiting family in Kennett Square and the surrounding area.Paul C.

This charming and unique retreat center/private residence was our weekend home base for our party of seven who were in the area for a family reunion.Spacious and comfortable, with plenty of room to spread out. The bedrooms were large, cozy, and peacefully quiet at night. The location was convenient, the host/owner (Barbara) very friendly and generous, and we fell in love with Anouk, the sweetest cat.The host’s private rooms (with separate exterior entrance) are on the lower level and are separated by curtains from the other bedrooms on the same floor. The kitchen is shared with the host.Plenty of space was made available in the shared fridge for our food and drink. The host was very discreet and was only ever in the rest of the house when we weren't "home."

Beautiful property with some special quirks

This is a gorgeous historic property that I think would fill many people’s buckets! It would be an ideal location for a graduation celebration with family that does not have any special needs. In hindsight, I should maybe have been more clear in our needs - as it was NOT a good option for anyone with balance issues or vision issues. The entrance is either up a flight of uneven stone stairs (again, it is historic, and they are true to the property) that ends in a set of wooden steps that has a low railing that does not allow for safe ascent or descent for someone with balance challenges. The other options is up a slope of grass hilly. This would have been an ok option if it hadn’t been pouring rain all weekend. Once in the home it is a beautiful and warm environment - easy to relax with many people. The kitchen is shared with the owner (I also did not catch that the write up

Longwood Garden trip

We got together to see nearby Longwood garden Christmas display and have some kid cousin time. Appreciated pizza rec (Floga Pizza!) and took a nice hike on the property. Barbara stays in part of the house downstairs and was helpful with tips. Water features outside and really cool belongings inside made me glad we had grandparents with us and our youngest was a calm 4 year old.
