About the host
Hosted by James Dean

Aloha! Born in Germany and raised in Washington state, I moved to Hawai'i several years ago with my husband whose family is kanaka 'ōiwi (Native Hawaiian). We raised six adopted kids together. I enjoy cooking and exploring all that Hawaiʻi island has to offer. I love hosting guests. Not only does it allow me to use my decades experience in property management, but it also gives me the opportunity to share aloha with people from around the world.
Why they chose this property
Our neighborhood is called Waiākea Uka or the upland part of Waiākea. We love our neighborhood. It is quiet, lush, and full of aloha. And almost every evening, a cooling breeze blows from the mountains - natureʻs air conditioning.
What makes this property unique
Hale Malu is a perfect gathering place for family and friends. The indoor spaces are curated to feel like a Hawaiian retreat, and the outdoor spaces are great for barbecuing (charcoal) and gathering around the firepit table (propane) for storytelling. And, with your hosts living downstairs, we are there to answer any questions and address any concerns. Hale Malu feels like a home away from home.
