House needs some TLC
This house was in a great location in Port Arthur in a nice neighborhood and within comfortable driving distance of all the "hot" birding spots we planned for on the Gulf. The price was very reasonable. The house has 5 bedrooms and 3 baths and the general cleanliness was good--kitchen, bathrooms, etc. But the windows were filthy inside and out, and the shades were old and difficult to open and close. 4 out of 5 mattresses were awful, as noted in a Nov review. There were a number of needed repairs or breakdowns--air conditioning; a fan over one of the beds, the fan over the kitchen stove; and on the last morning the final problem, a blown fuse to the fridge, microwave, and toaster (the last of which we could easily move to a live-fuse area.) The owner was responsive and we had a next-day repair on the A/C and bedroom fan. But our impression was that since she lives near Houston, she may use occupants as her "inspectors" and doesn't overnight in this place herself. Also, no check-out instructions, tho we took care to empty garbage, pull bed-sheets, and we moved the plentiful ice to the sink so when it melted, it wouldn't leak or flood the fridge. Also, though taste is individual, she might consider abandoning the staged look of black and gold table place-settings--they were dusty and in the way of "real" dishes, so we simply moved them.
