La Casa del Sol is the former residence of the 16th century Governor of Guatemala. Built around a central courtyard garden, the house has the original cupola, dome ceiling and three-foot wide stone walls.

Master bedroom has a double bed, skylight and Colonial window. Second bedroom is equipped with 2 twin beds and fireplace. Third bedroom has a double bed and two single beds.
There are three bathrooms with hot showers. Small living room has satellite TV, and there is a large formal dining room. The house has wifi internet.

The entirety of our stay was wonderful. The housekeeper Maria was able to make dinner for us one evening and the children and I loved it. The house is so much charm in history It's quite wonderful. Being able to be in such close walking distance and right in the heart of Antigua was perfect. The post also helped to coordinate pick up and drop off. I can't say anything negative at all. The entire stay was a wonderful change of pace and a great slice of Antigua history. I highly recommend to read about the history that the house has posted all over the walls on the entry in the living room in the bedrooms. To read about all of the effort love and stories that comes with the place that we got to stay in was fantastic.
Our family, including two boys (10/12) had a wonderful stay. Enjoyed the house and outdoor patio and the lovely living space. Our favorite moment from Antigua was actually attending a soccer game, as it was about a 15-20 min walk from the house and was such a fun, and safe atmosphere. Definitely would come back again!
Great stay! The home was very clean, comfortable, and exactly as described. The location was convenient and quiet, with easy access to everything we needed. Maria was friendly and responsive, and the home had all the amenities to make our stay easy and enjoyable. Would definitely stay here again.
Staying at this property in Antigua felt like stepping into living history. Built in the 16th century, the home is beautifully preserved, with a lush courtyard that immediately draws you in. Despite its age and museum-like quality, it never feels cold or untouchable—quite the opposite. There’s a warmth and comfort here that makes it easy to settle in and feel at home. One of the highlights of our stay was Maria, the housekeeper, who lives onsite in her own casita at the back of the property. She is consistently kind, attentive, and genuinely helpful, adding a personal touch that elevates the entire experience. The second-generation owner has thoughtfully shared information about both the home’s history and the broader story of Antigua, which I found fascinating. It added an extra layer of appreciation for where we were staying and the cultural richness surrounding us.It’s not often I would say I felt privileged to stay somewhere, but that’s exactly how I felt here. Combined with an excellent location—within easy walking distance of just about everything in town—this property is a treasure. My wife and I hope to return one day when our children are older so they can experience this as well.

We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful 16th-century colonial house in central Antigua, Guatemala. The location couldn’t be better! Everything was within walking distance, making it easy to explore the city. The home itself was stunning, especially the open courtyard, which made the space feel peaceful and authentically colonial.Maria was incredibly helpful throughout our stay and made sure we had everything we needed. We would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend this property to anyone visiting Antigua!
An amazing property filled with history, artifacts, and a beautiful garden. Great location walking distance to all the sites. Maria, the housekeeper is so helpful. Beds are comfy, there is always hot water for showers and the kitchen is fully stocked. There is ample space inside and outside around the courtyard for many people to stay confortably. This place is a gem. Woke up grateful every day grateful to have found it!!
This property was far beyond our expectations. Tremendously historical,, beatiful courtyard, great location, and it made our stay incredibly memorable. Maria took great care of us. Can't wait to come back!

Hi Sherri,
I am so glad your visit to Casa del Sol was a success as we enjoyed sharing Casa del Sol with you. We hope to see you again soon.
Warm regards,
Jon
This is a lovely, well-maintained time-capsule of of a house close to everything. Expect party music from the hotel next door on weekends but it's joyful, free, and stops at 10:30 pm. We all (family) enjoyed ourselves.

Dear MaryJo and family,
Great that you enjoyed your time at Casa del Sol. Sorry about the weekend music from the nearby hotel. The music was likely due to the celebrations before Lent as its not common during the rest of the year. We hope you return soon!
Best regards, Jon

Absolutely perfect place to stay
This is one of those reviews I hesitate to write because I want to keep this place a secret so it won't be booked forever. Casa del Sol was perfect for me, my 14 year old daughter and her friend. We stayed for a week and wished to stay longer. It is beautiful, comfortable, and safe. I will be back!

This place is a gem, absolutely adorable.
The moment you walk in is a time capsule, so many treasures, to much to look at, is a museum!
All the details are bespoke, you can spend two days just looking at the furniture and the decor.
It has his own couple little libraries with interesting reads and very informative if you have the time.
Location is walkable to restaurants, park and stores, and the host had amazing communication skills, I recommend this place 100%
Cultured people’s dream!
We had a fantastic week long stay in this beautiful restored Colonial, private residence right in the heart of Antique. A large courtyard with flowers and trees anchors the open space that we loved to hangout in and play games, eat and just enjoy a beer or book. The bedrooms, lounge area restrooms and kitchen all border the courtyard. Clean with modern facilities that don’t take away from the charm of the historic property.
Jon was great to work with, fast, responsive and very knowledgeable. Maria was kind enough to agree to cook breakfast for our family of 6 “yum”!!
A fantastic family trip!!!!
What can I say?… La Casa del Sol delivers what it advertises, it delivers what it says, it delivers what it promises and more … perfect location, available and kind House manager, enough spaces and rooms for everyone to enjoy and to have some private times and moments, a large central garden —-just beautiful and refreshing … many seating areas to study (especially if you are learning Spanish or to just read and relax), and, again, the location is perfect … closer to everything.. and if you get hungry, even closer to one of the more famous street food vendor in Antigua, just around the corner … it is a place to live and a place to make many memorable memories … it is indeed “La Casa del Sol ”… and the owner is perfect to work with…
Casa del Sol was perfect. Spacious, comfortable, historic, beautiful, casual, relaxing, close to everything. We enjoyed the flowers blooming in the bright, sunny courtyard, the opportunity to relax, away from the Semana Santa crowds on the internal veranda, and explore all the pieces of history and artisenia displayed throughout the compound. With 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and high ceilings, our multi-generational family of 5 could spread out for privacy, or congregate for movie watching or outdoor dining. Maria was an excellent resource to have as a caretaker on the property. She kept a low profile but was always available to cook a meal, do some laundry, or give advice on where to go for this or that. I loved our stay and will return again for a longer one.

Perfect for our family
We stayed at this fantastic home for a week in June and had a wonderful experience in Antigua. It was a perfect fit for my husband, our 3 kids and my parents. It was great to have all of the outdoor space within the home. We loved having coffee in the morning looking out at the garden. It was also nice to have the space for the kids to run around and play in the courtyard. The kitchen was fully equipped and it was handy to have the option to have some meals at the house. The owners even thoughtfully left coffee and fruit which was so nice to have on hand the morning after we arrived. We couldn't ask for a more convenient location. It was easy to walk everywhere we wanted to go and if the kids got tired we could take an inexpensive tuk tuk or taxi ride home.
We loved our time in Antigua and would definitely stay in this house again if we ever get the change to go back.

We are pleased that your family enjoyed casa del sol. We hope you and your family come back real soon.
I have been using VRBO since it's inception. This is by far the most beautiful and peaceful place I have had the pleasure to stay in.
As Jon said in an email, she's an old lady and they are protective of her. Like an abuela, she is welcoming, opening her doors to an oasis of calm in the middle of Antigua. Like an abuela, she has her wisdom gained from a long life. It's found in the peace of the garden, the pleasure in being outside under the porch roof during the afternoon rain. I could go on and on (obviously).
Marie, the caretaker, is lovely. She lets you have your space but is there when needed.
The house is nestled on a quieter street in town but all is immediately accessible.
I look forward to returning.

About the host
Hosted by Jon Jickling
We are a family of three generations, spread over the USA who travel to Antigua as often as possible to enjoy the perfect climate and friendly local Guatemalan people and to relax in our simple, comfortable home.
Why they chose this property
Antigua has a perfect climate, historic and ancient interests, a friendly diverse population of artists, expats, native Mayan people and young travelers. Casa del Sol is located in the colonial core close to the central plaza but in a quiet street away from the busiest part of town.
What makes this property unique
Hearing 16th century churchbells chiming the hours through the night, watching flocks of parrots squawking overhead, feeling the warm tropical sun and watching the dramatic sunset over three volcanoes.
