Sunset Cottage on Calico Creek is an updated, vintage fishing cottage, built in 1942 but with all the modern conveniences. It lies right on the bank of Calico Creek and in the heart of Morehead City at 20th street.
Kayak from the side yard or the 20th street bridge, walk or ride your bike 1/2 mile to the beach on the Sound and the downtown waterfront filled with shops and restaurants, put your boat in at the Morehead City public ramp at the Visitor's Center less than 2 miles from the cottage, or drive the 7 minutes to Atlantic Beach. You can do it all from Sunset Cottage, at an affordable rate, and then enjoy spectacular sunsets on the water from the screened porch or the second floor deck overlooking Calico Creek.
Decorated like the fishing cottage it was intended to be, Sunset Cottage has two bedrooms - a primary with a queen bed and a second with a queen and two twins. There is a full hall bathroom upstairs that the bedrooms share, and a powder room downstairs with a private outdoor shower.
The modern kitchen has a ceramic cooktop and oven, fridge, and a counter-top ice maker. The coffee bar offers a drip coffeemaker, grinder, a cartridge machine (Keurig-style), and an electric kettle for tea drinkers. A kayak and corn hole game is provided for your enjoyment but once the peaceful setting soaks in, you may not want to do anything but watch the water, sky and wildlife that surrounds you. The photos are deceiving. While the cottage itself is comfy and cozy, it sits directly on a busy street with constant traffic — day and night, without pause. Any hope of a peaceful sunset or a quiet moment outside is completely overshadowed by the noise and movement of passing cars.There is no beach access, and the kayak launch requires hauling equipment nearly 2 miles away, making water activities far more effort than advertised. A simple stroll or sitting outside to enjoy the scenery simply isn’t possible given the location.For the price, this property falls well short of expectations. If you’re looking for a tranquil retreat, look elsewhere.

I'm sorry you did not enjoy your stay. However, the photos are accurate. The house is on the water and it looks just like the photos show. I am not sure what you mean by saying they are deceiving. Kayaks can be launched from the yard at high tide and from the bridge right at 20th street, just yards from the house. While there are kayak launches all over Morehead City, there is no need to go two miles to put in.

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Our favorite room in the house was the screened in porch. When it rained, we could still be out there and the view of the marsh with oyster beds watching the tides go in and out was wonderful. Great Egrets visited frequently and some snowy egrets, plovers, curlews and of course sea gulls also visited. There are snails and fiddler crabs in the boggy area as well. Very peaceful to sit and breathe in the sea air.The house itself is a piece of history, and the furniture, décor and art reflect this old fishing home, which is decorated very tastefully. The window at the kitchen sink looks out to the marsh and you can imagine the fisherman’s wife looking out there back in the day and enjoying that beautiful sunset. We have a larger and not agile dog, so we monitored her on the stairs. The owners informed us that there is a busy road in front of the house. We take our dogs out on leash all the time, so this didn’t bother me. However, if a dog got off leash, this would be a concern. The screened area has a door to the back yard (not fenced), so we took the dogs out on leash that way unless we were all going for a walk or ride in the car and then went out the front door to ensure the home was locked. You can hear the traffic, but I focused more on the sounds of nature and didn’t have a problem with it. There are wooden decks going over the marsh areas on both sides of the street, which was a nice place to walk the dogs in addition to walking down some neighboring community streets.Although the home is older, it is tastefully updated to be modern with a nice shower and the modern conveniences one would want. The home was clean and only a short drive to area sights, shopping and beaches. We greatly enjoyed our peaceful stay at Sunset Cottage on Calico Creek.

Beautiful cottage in a gorgeous location while still being conveniently close to Beaufort, Atlantic beach, and anything else. Cottage was clean, cozy, with stunning views inside or out. All together made for a great trip!

House has potential

Location was great! Management company was great! House itself was just ok, but could be cute as a button! Den and porch furniture need to be donated to Good Will or thrown in dump. They were old, stained , uncomfortable ,etc. We covered them up prior to sitting on them. Also need more sitting options in den. House had one couch and one chair. Decor is awful as well but the furniture was definitely our biggest complaint. Rest of house was fine though! The last suggestion would be to have cleaning supplies avaliable to help keep house tidy. House didnt have a broom, toilet bowl brush etc. I'm just one who likes to keep things clean etc. We would stay here again IF owners updated the furniture and decor. Again, the house has so much potential! Wouldn't take much to make it a more comfortable, appealing vacation home. Overall our time in Morehead City was great!
