We had an amazing time, the house was beautiful and very well stocked with all necessary kitchen items, bedding and plenty of towels. Great location and amazing view of the lake.
House was great for a family getting away. The kitchen was well stocked, the beds were comfortable and everything we needed was there. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly.
this is a beautiful home on Smith Mountain Lake. The home was clean, comfortable and well stocked. The walk down to the lake was good. The dock was nice. I love that they allow dogs. The bed and the master bedroom was very comfortable. I would definitely stay here again.
Another great stay! House is located on a quiet cove that is great for some fishing and dock chilling! The covered porch area provides a nice spot to relax even with a little rain. Hosts were wonderful and the house continues to be a great fit for our family! Looking forward to our next visit.
The house is beautiful. Everything you need to feel at home and be comfortable is there. The dock is a great place to sunbathe, swim or fish. The view is great. Nice, quiet neighborhood with deer grazing on the lawn. It was a great place for our family vacation.

Great location. Home is large and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils and spices. Great quiet cove to swim of kayak in. Overall this was a very good experience.
This house was advertised as new and in my opinion it is not. But ver nice
Would highly recommend. Lots of room, lots of kitchen equipment! We weren’t that familiar with the TV system, but eventually figured it out enough to watch the 2024 NCAA final games.👍
The home was very spacious with everything we needed to have a great family vacation! Everything was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen also was well stocked with everything we needed, including a traditional coffee machine and Keurig. It was also nice to have a dock where we could store the boat we rented under cover. We just loved our week in this beautiful home. Thank you!

Nice family vacation
This house has everything you can ask for. It is beaurifully deocrated with every ammenity you can imagine. The boat dock offers a great place to catch fish and swim. Boat traffic was at a minimum and the cove is quiet at night.
We will be sure to stay there again.

Your are welcome back any time.
Thanks again,

My husband, adult daughters and I had a wonderful stay at Gillum’s Getaway! The house was beautiful, spacious, and well equipped. If we weren’t on the lake, we were often on the back deck which overlooks the peaceful lake. We often spotted deer in the neighborhood! We weren’t there for the weekend, but our Sunday through Friday stay was amazing!
We loved the location of the house, lush nature, the lake view, the specious deck and the dock. It would be nice if there is a floating deck for getting in and out of the kayaks easier, but we made it work. We spent most of the time outside.
My husband, a very tall men loved the big shower, I needed a little bit more lighting, I guess it comes with age. Overall, we enjoyed the place.

Absolutely Amazing
I had a spectacular time at this property. The house was equipped with everything my family and I needed. More than enough space for everyone to be together or have a moment to their self. The views are amazing. I wish my stay was longer. I will definitely be going back.

Thank you so much for the review. We are glad you and your family enjoyed your stay. You are welcome to come back anytime.
Offseason rentals are very laid back and relaxing but you should really come in the summer when the water is warm enough to enjoy for swimming, boating, skiing, and fishing.
Thanks again for staying with us and come back soon!!
This was a last second decision to get away to the lake. Even though it rained nearly every day, we pushed through and enjoyed the beautiful location, caught plenty of fish right off of the dock, and used both the kayaks and the canoe every day.
If you are willing to enjoy life, this property will not disappoint.
Very nice home and dock at the lake with great views. Well stocked with everything we needed and lots of room! Family room furniture needs updating. One step on the way down to the dock with a hole in the corner is unsafe and needs replacement. The grill was hard to clean.

The best lake vacation
Our 2 families had a wonderful time at this lovely home. The decor is beautiful throughout. It is taken care of very well, is well stocked and had everything we needed. We couldn't think of anything it lacked All the bedding was very comfortable and clean. The kitchen was wonderful - we used it three times a day. Adults and children alike enjoyed the dock, party deck and swimming. Don was very accommodating, flexible and helpful. We didn't want to leave and plan to return again. I would highly recommend this great house to anyone.

Dear Megan,
Thanks for such a woderful review of our home. I'm glad you all had a good time. Your welcome to come back any time you like.
Thanks again and God bless,

My family loved our stay at your lovely home! My sisters raved about how clean and beautiful everything was. The beds also got a 5 star rating. Excellent for people who suffer from back issues! It's pretty remote, but that suited me just fine. However, our November stay meant a number of places in the area were closed. But that certainly wasn't your fault! Overall, we all enjoyed our visit, most especially the peaceful scenery and the stunning home. This place is a winner!

Thank you for doing a review of your stay. We loved having you and you are welcome back any time!!
We had a wonderful time at this lake house with my family! The house had everything we needed and more. Really enjoyed the Jacuzzi tubs inside as well as the lake. The ladder from dock isn’t long enough, so can be a core challenge getting out of the water, if water level low. The power company regulates the level, so beyond owners control. The 2 level dock is amazing with both levels and such pretty sunset views. We loved Mitchell’s Marina w restaurant and live music only 2 miles away. Would love to come back to this house while we still can. Such a beautiful and peaceful setting. And the water is so clean, one can see 6 feet below.

Beautiful House
This was a family get-together - adults and children - and we had plenty of room. We had a great time, even with the cold weather. The house is beautiful and very spacious. We did a lot of cooking (having our Thanksgiving Dinner early with family) and the kitchen had plenty of utensils, pots and pans, dinnerware. Property was clean and well maintained. The view is spectacular. I would definitely recommend this property to friends. We did not go to any nearly attractions. Owner was very gracious and answered our questions promptly. Pictures of house accurately reflect the home.

Great Family Get Away
We really enjoyed our stay overall. The house was large enough for 4 adults and a toddler (and really could have still been large enough for another adult couple!). The views were spectacular and the house was beautiful! We only ran into three problems. 1. The wireless internet is unreliable. This is probably to no fault of the homeowner, however I wish he would have been more forth coming with that information as I informed him I was an online graduate student with school work to complete. I was able to get cell service and used my mobile hot-spot to accommodate my school work. The wireless internet is also not password protected and the houses are close enough that neighbors and visitors can access the internet without problem. Due to it being the Thanksgiving weekend, we are sure others were accessing the internet, thus preventing us from being able to use it effectively, as we noticed many cars in the neighborhood. The second problem was that we were there over Thanksgiving and although the kitchen is fully equipped it didn't have enough for baking multiples. Next time I'll bring my own baking and serving dishes to make it more comfortable. Finally, on Thanksgiving we "ran out of water". Upon leaving the homeowner a voice mail, we had a return call and solution within 10 minutes. He was able to walk my husband through changing the water filter without any problems. Since he does have a house keeper, it would seem to me that this should have been checked on prior to our arrival. The only other thing I did not like was having to pick up the keys from the housekeeper. While she does not live far from the house, making that extra stop after already driving 5 hours was a little inconvenient. All in all the house was wonderful and the homeowner was easy and pleasant to work with. We will consider this house for our Thanksgiving trip next year!

Jesse,
Thank you for your review, we value all of our guests opinions and try to improve the accommodations based on renters feedback.
We have updated the internet service and it is also now password protected.
We have also replaced all of the silverware and cooking utensiles ie. pots, pans, ect.
We have also purchased new towels and lots of them so there will be plenty for everyone.
Thanks again for staying with us and we hope to see you again soon.

Fall at SML (Smith Mountain Lake) is amazing. Lots of hiking, history, wine tasting, brilliant sunsets and cozy evenings by the fire. This house provides access to all and more. It was the perfect launching pad for adventure and a welcome site at the end of a busy day. The cove is quiet (especially in fall).

About the host
Hosted by Don and Anita Gillum
My wife and I had this house custom built in 2007 with plans to retire here in the not too distant future. In the meantime, we rent it out year-round so that others can enjoy the lake as much as we do.
Why they chose this property
This is an ideal property to rent because the slope to the water is not very steep and fairly easy to walk for older guests. The location is on the lower end of the lake close to the Dam so the water is deep and clear.
What makes this property unique
We love the enormous amount of deck space that faces the lake. Two decks and a lower patio off of the rec room/ poolroom the has an HD flatscreen TV, exercise equipment, and a pool 9-foot regulation Brunswick pool table. There is a pub table for having drinks, playing cards or board games. There is also a full length of the house front deck that catches all that beautiful morning sun.
