About this property
Oscoda area - relax and enjoy family time on a Lake Huron sugar sand beach
Lift your head off your pillow in the master bedroom to watch the sun rise over Lake Huron, then snooze a bit more or head down to the beach for an early morning beach walk or kayak on a flat surfaced Lake Huron. Kids can either sleep close in bunk beds in the master bedroom or in twin beds in a separate bedroom (4 twin beds in all). A back room has another full size bed for a happy couple such that the cottage can handle 4 adults and at least as many kids. A full kitchen and laundry area complement the home. As the day advances and the breeze picks up, sail in a sunfish or windsurf from the beach or head a few miles south to Oscoda for a float trip in canoes, kayaks, or tubes along the AuSable River. Or take a bike ride around Cedar Lake or just lie on the beach and enjoy the sun. As the day comes to an end, mix up some margaritas and grill up a feast (or order pizza) and watch the amazing sunset colors develop over Lake Huron. As the sun sets, start a fire on the upper beach, make s'mores, sing some songs, or tell ghost stories while watching shooting stars and satellites overhead.
Also a great escape in the winter to a cozy cottage with a fireplace, a table for jigsaw puzzling, or a nice couch for reading (or snoozing) - both with great views of Lake Huron! Adventure outside for walks along the frozen beach with ice flows extending varying distances into the lake. Nearby you can also find several groomed X-country ski trails. Return to the cottage to warm up by a fire with hot chocolate or some soup and then enjoy games with the family or movies on the big screen with a LCD projector.
Although we encourage you to turn off your connections to the outside world - there is high speed wifi internet service at the cottage. Cell phone service varies with carrier (all can be found a few miles away in Oscoda) - you've come to the cottage to relax and reconnect with family and loved ones - not be connected to the world!

Beth - Thanks for your nice comments. We truly enjoy sharing our cottage with others that recognize the jewel of the Lake Huron up north experience. Hope your family can return again. Hal
Amazing location right on an awesome beach. Can’t beat this location. House is a bit rustic but live-able for a week and the host is super communicative.

Incredible beach location directly on Lake Huron
The location of this cabin is perfection, close to town and amenities yet very private lot and directly on the water. The sugar sand beach is not rocky at all and truly lovely. I wish the cabin had been cleaner and the 2nd bathroom operational but overall we enjoyed our stay.
We rented this cottage for a week in August of 2013. The cottage is right on the beach which made for convenient access back and forth especially since we had our new baby with us. The cottage is only 2.5 hours away from Mackinaw City and it was a perfect day trip to the island for our family. The cottage was clean and spacious. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing week at the beach!

Thank you for the kind review and we're pleased that you enjoyed your stay at our cottage! We never tire of the beach or other water sports such as kayaking on Lake Huron at sunrise or a lazy afternoon float down the AuSable River. We noticed a large mound of sand at the upper beach indicating that your kids had a great time playing there, possibly burying their parent in the sand?

Fun and relaxing
We had several family members come and go throughout our stay and found everything we could want to keep ourselves entertained and comfortable. We had 7-11 people, ages 3-83. The pictures don't really do the property justice. We would come back gladly and hope to someday.

Beautiful water and sandy beach
Loved the water and how sandy it was! The only problems was that 1 of the bathrooms was pretty much unusable and all the dressers were full so there was no place to put our clothes and things. But the outside was just wonderful! Plus, loved the kayaks and sailboat. Would definitely consider staying here again if the bathroom was fixed!

Thank you for your nice comments about our cottage. We are also frustrated about the back bathroom but have had 3 different plumbing services attempt to fix the problem without success - the next step it to tear up the floor and concrete slab - clearly we are reluctant to do that when the other full bathroom is fully functional. Again, we apologize for the inconvenience.
The location of this property is perfect. The beach is private and beautiful, the outside of the cottage is well taken care of and a lovely place to sit and soak in summer. The cottage itself is a little tired and could use some TLC. That being said, the beds were comfortable and the kitchen had plenty of everything you might need. The “ultra water filter” in the kitchen is a real plus. Communication with the owner is excellent.

Thanks for your comments - glad you had a great week of weather to enjoy "up north".
Perfect getaway from the city life. We stayed here with our dog and loved it! The beach is amazing!!! Hal was very kind to us and answered our calls when we had any questions. The garage was stacked with kayakes and beach loungers. We turned the heater on at night and it worked really quick. Make sure to wake up right before the sunrise for the most magical sky in Michigan! We hope to visit again. Thanks again Hal!!!

Nice location... house needs help
First impression upon opening door was strong mold smell and possibly cat dander caused allergy problems. Beautiful views with lots of water toys the owner was generous to share. Internet download speed was 3mb - too slow for streaming. Only one bathroom was functional, but that was stated prior. Animals running inside the walls all night long. Owner confirmed awareness and suggested mice or ground squirrels. Would not have booked had I known of mold and mice. Would not recommend.

Ken,
We're sorry about the odor in the cottage and occasional animals in the walls. We have been working with pest specialists to get rids of the occasional critters - challenging in an old cottage. There have not been cats in the cottage since we purchased it in 2008 but renters are allowed to bring dogs and we also bring our dogs to the cottage - so not sure about the odors. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay!!

It’s important people know what they’re getting into with this rental before they make a decision. Please read the entire review. The good: beautiful sandy beach with spectacular sunrise. Nice backyard area Propane for the grill was provided for us. Kayaks were provided for use. Hal let us bring an additional dog. Plenty of board games. The bad: Cabin is advertised as having 1.5 bathrooms, THERE IS ONLY ONE USEABLE BATHROOM! The second has plumbing issues so you can only urinate in the toilet and you can’t even flush the TP. The sink doesn’t work in this bathroom. Looking at previous reviews, the issue has been ongoing since at least 2023.The cabin was infested with mice during our stay. I was constantly cleaning mouse poop off of the counters in the kitchen. When we brought the issue up to Hal, his response is that it’s an old cabin and he’s sorry if it ruined our stay. I only think the old cabin excuse can go so far.The cabin was very cluttered and dirty. There was barely space for our things. A layer of dust/dirt on everything. Used bar of soap in the shower when we arrived. Looked as if someone was living/staying in the home the day before we arrived. The fridge and freezer had food and items in it when we arrived and it was dirty. You are told to bring your own sheets and towels (didn’t understand this since there’s a washer and dryer inside). I just feel that people deserve to know the good and bad considering you’re paying a little over 300/night to stay.

We are sorry that the cottage did not meet your expectations. As I explained in an e-mail to you, we have battled with mice on and off over the years, using multiple exterminators, traps, etc. We do not put traps out with renters because we do not want dogs to get into them - also the reason we do not use poison baits. Last time we were there the sink in the back bathroom worked fine - thanks for bringing this to our attention. I had also told you about the limitations of the back bathroom toilet in our instructions packet sent before your stay. Sorry again that the cottage did not meet your expectations - you certainly had a beautiful week of weather.
Hal
We had a wonderful time staying at this cabin. The dogs had a great time my mother and I had a great time the view is spectacular. The accommodations are perfect. I’ll definitely be back.
Had a great 10 days at this cabin. Our 3 dogs had the time of their lives at the beach. We’re able to unplug for a while it still able to connect when needed. Owner is very responsive.
This property had a fabulous beach, miles to walk along in either direction with clear Lake Huron water and a hard sandy bottom. Our dog was welcome to come too. Super private and tranquil setting to enjoy.

About the host
Hosted by Hal Schott
My wife and I are veterinarians that work at Michigan State University and have busy careers and lives trying to keep up with our jobs and our two children. Our kids were 10 and 7 when we bought the cottage and despite soccer, cross-country, and other school events, we are always game for a drive 'up north' for a night, weekend, or hopefully a longer respite.
Why they chose this property
We fell in love with this area of Lake Huron when we visited friends in the area. We purchased the cottage with the goal of 'slowing down' intermittently and having quality family time. Days on the lake, whether summer or winter, start with a family breakfast followed by a beach walk with our dogs. The days continue largely unplanned but typically end with a family dinner and campfire or movies on the big screen. Whether we are there for a day, a weekend, or a couple of weeks, we have never once been ready to leave when we had to return to reality. We are convinced that this has been the single most important investment in quality family life and we hope that you may also experience the relaxation and reconnection that we experience every time we visit the lake!
What makes this property unique
Relax, revive, and reconnect with loved ones and family. There is no daily schedule to keep and plenty of opportunity to slow down and enjoy the passing of time (the meaning of life according to James Taylor).
