A vintage-style table fan adds a gentle breeze, though the Nest-controlled climate system ensures year-round comfort.

Ample parking is available in the gravel lot beside the home, with additional street parking if needed.

About the host
Hosted by Tabetha Heemstra

I'm originally from the south suburbs of Chicago, just over the Indiana border, but I've now lived in Indiana longer than I lived in Illinois.
I'm married with two adult children, and in this season of life, l've been able to scale back from our family business and focus on what I love most-restoring historic homes and sharing them with others.
I've always been drawn to the craftsmanship and charm of older buildings and homes. Ever since my husband and I lived in an 1890 home as newlyweds-one that had lost much of its original beauty-I've dreamed of restoring a Victorian the right way. McKinley Manor has given me that opportunity. With a passion for design, an eye for detail, and a love for hands-on work (thanks to skills passed down from my father), this project has truly been a labor of love.
Hosting gives me the chance to share that love of history, beauty, and hospitality with others.
Whether you're visiting for a special event or simply a quiet retreat, I hope you feel the warmth, care, and story that lives in this home.

Why they chose this property
I chose this neighborhood because it truly captures the heart and soul of small-town Indiana. McKinley Manor is located in the historic district of Rensselaer, nestled among tree-lined streets and beautiful early 20th-century homes. The area is peaceful, safe, and welcoming-ideal for a relaxing getaway or a special gathering with family and friends.
What drew me to this location most is its charm and walkability. From the front porch, you can hear church bells chime and see neighbors walking dogs or riding bikes. You're just a few blocks from Rensselaer's quaint downtown square, where you'll find local shops, cafes, and friendly faces. It's the kind of place where time slows down, and people still wave hello.
I love the sense of history here. McKinley Manor itself was built around 1893, and I've taken great care to restore and preserve its Victorian character while updating it for comfort and style. The neighborhood reflects that same timeless beauty, with each home telling its own story.
Whether you're visiting for a wedding, reconnecting with family, or just looking to escape the noise of city life, this neighborhood offers a peaceful setting with genuine Midwestern hospitality. It's a place where memories are made-and I'm so happy to share it with you.

What makes this property unique
McKinley Manor is a rare gem-an 1893 Victorian designed by the renowned architect George F. Barber.
What makes it truly special is not just its beauty, but its history. The home is proudly listed on both the Indiana State and Federal Registers of Historic Places, and I've worked hard to honor that legacy while making it feel bright, peaceful, and welcoming for today's guests.
Unlike many Victorians, McKinley Manor has been thoughtfully updated with soft, calming pastel tones— stepping away from the dark, heavy colors typical of the era. I've preserved the home's original charm, including the beautiful wavy glass windows, which have been carefully restored. To add both privacy and a touch of elegance, l've hung a few leaded and stained glass pieces in front of select windows.
Throughout the home, you'll find antique pieces lovingly placed in nearly every room.
From dressers and mirrors to artwork and decor, these hand-picked touches help create a sense of nostalgia and connection to the home's past, while still offering the comfort and functionality today's travelers appreciate.
Even though it honors its historic roots, McKinley Manor also includes the modern amenities that make your stay easy and enjoyable. The kitchen features updated appliances, and the home is equipped with three smart TVs and Amazon Echo devices throughout for your convenience.
One of the most unique features of the home is its suitability for special occasions- especially bridal parties. The front parlor is ideal for getting ready on the big day, complete with an original pier mirror and three antique Eastlake vanities. It's a romantic, photo-ready space where beautiful memories begin.
Whether you're visiting for a celebration, a quiet retreat, or to experience the charm of a historic home with modern comforts, McKinley Manor offers an experience that's truly one-of-a-kind.
