I’m very sorry that you were disappointed with May Lodge especially as we put extra effort into trying to make your visit special and the proprietor even offered you access to her private garden when your wife requested this. After you departed we had a few days’ vacancy and have filled in the few settlement cracks. Again, we’re sorry you were disappointed.

Wonderful Property, Great location

The property was amazing and communication with Abigail was excellent, it was in an excellent location for our family holiday with a short drive into Belfast and close to motorway links for further trips to Giants Causeway and Derry. Our kids loved the property which was very clean and spacious, more than enough room for ue. I would definitely recommend this property for your trip to Northern Ireland / Belfast

Misdescribed - a disappointment

Be aware that there is no garden or balcony - just a view over a fenced-off property. There is only a tiny sitting out area next to the wheelie bins. The "acre of garden" is a derelict building plot accessed 150 yards away, via a locked gate. During the recent heatwave we were trapped indoors and would never have booked this property if we hadn't been misled by the text and photos.

I’m sorry you were disappointed with your stay with us. When you first mentioned on the phone that you had difficulty opening the gate to the shore I called to see you at May Lodge several times but unfortunately you weren’t there. I would like to clarify a few points: There is a small area at the back of May Lodge (walled off from bin area) with - what we would think of as magnificent - views over the garden of the main residence and Belfast Lough. A photograph of this is on the VRBO website. I reminded you of the Pebble garden (accessed over a private driveway) which is for the exclusive use of May Lodge visitors. I also offered you as an extra treat exclusive use of the patio area in the main garden (as in the photo). Visitors over the past few weeks have likened it to being on the Italian Riviera because of the fantastic weather we’ve been having. We keep the gate to the lower garden locked as this area is for exclusive use of our visitors giving them private access to the shoreline. It most definitely isn’t a ‘derelict’ building site. Previously on this area we had a boathouse with slipway and a studio where an internationally renowned sculptor created his many public works of art. I don’t understand your comment of being ‘trapped indoors’. We understand how important holidays are and we put a lot of effort into sharing this magical place with our visitors. Again, we are sorry that this visit didn’t work out for you.

Homey and warm

We had a wonderful stay here. The house was warm and comfortable and clean. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils and crockery, there was a dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. The beds were comfortable. The bathrooms were clean; each person had one bath towel and one hand towel, so you may want to bring more towels. Apart from the kitchen, the house was carpeted throughout. There is room in the car port for one car but not a lot of parking outside. The house is right by the sea and esplanade for easy walking. It's a fifteen minute drive to Belfast and even closer to the Titanic Museum. We also drove to Dublin, which is just over one hundred miles away. Lots to do and see, loads of wonderful restaurants too. I would definitely like to stay here again. Thank you Abigail

Thank you for writing such a lovely review and we're delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us. We do leave just one hand towel and bath towel for each guest but would have been happy to get you extra if needed. Due to Covid restrictions we have to wash all towels we leave out whether they're used or not. Delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and we very much hope to see you again.

Cute But Disappointing

We came to Ireland as a family of 4 with our adult children (ages 23 and 27). We were attracted to this house because of the pictures and size. We definitely wanted 3 beds/2 bath. Upon arrival for our 5 night stay, we were not greeted or contacted. I had to request the pin for the lock the day before because it was never sent when they received their final payment back in Aug. The morning of day 2, my kids both took lukewarm(at best) showers because the element was gone in their bathroom. We had to leave right at 7 am to catch a tour. I emailed the property manager that evening when we returned. She came the next morning and tried to get a plumber but unfortunately the plumber could not come until the day we checked out. Rosemary told my husband and while he wasn't happy with this, he said ok...what else was he supposed to say? So we had to share a bathroom with our kids for the remaining stay. I am wondering how the cleaning staff didn't notice this after the last people stayed there, which brings into question how well the house was cleaned. The ventilation was so poor and was especially bad after 4 showers that no one could use the mirror to get ready. The description says that there is hotel quality bedding, but none of the beds were provided a top sheet. Also brings into question the sanitary conditions of the beds because we wondered if the duvets are then changed between each renter, other wise you are sleeping with the same duvet next to your skin. I sent an email to the property manager the day before we left and asked for financial compensation/reimbursement of a portion of our stay. They didn't respond until after I sent a second email and they responded with my husband didn't mind that the plumbing didn't work and we didn't contact them until the second night of our stay and proceeded to offer 50 pounds towards our next stay. When I emailed back they went silent and didn't respond. The offer of 50 pounds off was unacceptable to us because we may never have the opportunity to go back and if we did we wouldn't stay there. Also an easy out for them knowing most people don't return. We left the cottage in immaculate condition and followed all of their rules ( we took pictures before we left just to cover ourselves because no one came at arrival or departure). We have yet to receive the deposit back, we left 5 days ago and we aren't really sure when that happens since the communication is poor. Rent with caution.

We were disappointed with your review especially as when I visited you said how pleased you were with everything. To answer some of the points. I’m sorry that the element in the electric shower went on the second day of your 5-day visit which you informed me of late that evening. I didn’t waste time trying to get a new part for this but the following morning ordered a completely new shower which was fitted two days later. Unfortunately, that was the morning you departed so couldn’t benefit from it. You were advised of the access details and the WiFi code in good time for your arrival. One of the reasons we have been given a 5 Star Rating from Tourism NI is because of our extremely high standard of cleanliness. I have a dedicated husband and wife team who only clean for me and take great pride in how our three houses are presented. Please note the other 5 Star reviews for May Lodge (14 in total) which mention this. As to the ventilation; the extract fan in the en-suite goes on automatically when the light is switched on. We noticed that this hadn’t been switched on during your visit and the large window appeared to have remained closed also. You mention concerns with our bedding. Our bed linen is 400 thread count, our duvets are luxury feather and down and for added comfort we have deep luxury bed toppers (very unusual for a self-catering property). Again, please note reviews which mention our extremely comfortable beds. We don’t put on a top sheet as we understand the correct way to benefit from a duvet is to have only it on top of you and I absolutely guarantee that the beds are totally stripped and fresh linen put on each time between rentals. We couldn’t contemplate doing anything other than this. You must have noticed how crisp and freshly laundered the linen was when you arrived. You say that most visitors don’t return but more than 50% of our business each year is from repeat bookings with some families returning every year for one or two and sometimes even three weeks. Return of Deposit: We have been very fortunate with our guests and have never had to retain a deposit. The timing of the return of this is between you and your booking agent. When you emailed asking for compensation I was concerned when you said "Could you please respond as to how this will be handled especially before we write our review? " I hope you continued to enjoy your visit to Ireland when you travelled further South. Proprietor

Absolutely lovely in every way.

Beautiful gardens, lovely home and very comfortable beds. A very warm welcome by John who lived next door and who we regret not being able to spend more time with. Four days were simply not enough..It served as a great base for touring and a delight to return to after every day of exploring the sites of Belfast and the spectacular coastlines and surrounding countryside. We highly recommend this wonderful home away from home and we-sent a glowing letter to Abigail sharing our delight with what was our all too short stay. We have been in the self-catering market in Belfast for 20 years and have many returning visitors. We live in the main residence which is a Grade II Listed Georgian house so are always on hand if we are needed.

Why they chose this property

May Lodge is very special as the proprietor designed and built this himself to replace the original gate lodge to the main residence. He named it after his mother.

What makes this property unique

We have public transport - both bus and train - within minutes of the property and this links with main train station and directly into Belfast city centre. We are half a mile from the end of the M2/M5 Motorway which links the whole of Northern Ireland. The lively and trendy Whiteabbey Village is only a short stroll along the shores of Belfast Lough and it has many cafes, restaurants, beauty salons and hairdressers.
