Perfect mountain place

Les Hirondelles has everything you need for an excellent ski holiday. The view is astonishing, the facilities in the chalet are well thought-of, and it has everything you need for a worry-free stay, including a toddler's boosting seat, a changing table and a raclette and fondue set. The only inconvenient during our stay was that workers came to replace some carpets on the stairs downstairs, making noise and using strongly-smelling substances to glue the carpets - but they were gone after we mentioned to Christophe that it bothered us. Apart from this, everything was perfect. A place to come back to.

One of the most impressive chalets we have stayed in the Alps in 20 years. Unbelievable views

Chalet Les Hirondelles has everything we require - amazing views, ski in/ski out, apres ski jacuzzi and steam room, log burning fire and a kitchen which has fondue, racklette etc. This was a five star experience from the beautifully furnished rooms, chalet manager (Christophe) who overlooked the chalet to the breathtaking views from the balcony. We have already booked out holiday at Les Hirondelles for 2019/2020!

Superb chalet

We have just come back from 5 days at the chalet, Les Hirondelles, and we had a fabulous time. The chalet itself is extremely comfortable and very well appointed. It has that special combination of being homely but incredibly functional: clearly a lot of care and thought has gone into designing and furnishing Les Hirondelles and nothing has been overlooked. We were in Villars to do some walking and the chalet was well located for this. The area caters for all levels of walks and hikes and everything is extremely well sign-posted. Generally we would go out in the mornings and have lunch at one of the mountain restaurants recommended before heading back to the chalet to recuperate and take in the stunning views over the valley from the chalet balcony. We would unhesitatingly recommend Les Hirondelles to anyone looking to spend summer days walking in Switzerland. You could spend the entire summer there and still not get through all that is on offer in terms of walking, biking, swimming and, of course, eating. Useful information for all of these is provided at the chalet and the owners were extremely helpful when it came to the complicated rules of recycling in Switzerland. We would love to go back!

Exceeded our high expectations! :-)

Absolutely enjoyed our week long stay at Les Hirondelles chalet and would highly-recommend it. Plenty of room and space for our family of eight (six adult 'kids') to play, relax, cook, and make some great memories together. Ah, the view - which is stunning - and then it gets turned up yet anther notch by the surprise double-rainbows and the magnificent sunsets, the cows and their harmonious bells in the distance and a sky full of stars. Really special. Great hikes to Travayenne, Solalex, mountain biking, visits to the new Bains de Villars, the bakery in Barboleuse, Le Table restaurant and nostalgic day-trips to Vevey, Gruyere, Fribourg and Interlaken/Thun. Our second to last day also coincided with the Vaud wine festival and Marché Artisinal which was so much fun. Transaction and communications with the owners and property manager were smooth and efficient.

9 years in Villars and yet to find better

Another wonderful visit for half term with my family to Les Hirondelles in Villars (see Taline F. review). This year was extra special, for the first time we navigated our way down the mountain as a family of 5. Given we are avid skiers this was a BIG milestone. When this feat is considered in combination with the familiar luxury and comfort the chalet it amounted to our best holiday ever. L'Etable is still a fantastic restaurant, the pistes are still extensive and well groomed, the post-ski hot tub and sauna get more necessary every year and the view from the sitting room still takes the breath away. I cannot recommend this chalet more highly.

Outstanding Family Chalet

As a family we have skied in many resorts and stayed in many chalets. Chalet Les Hirondelles if by far the very best we have ever stayed at. Firstly it has the most unbelievable view from every window. It is decorated with huge style and comfort and has a wonderful friendly feel to it ... a little like being in ones own home. All the bedrooms are of a fantastic size with their own immaculate and up to date bathrooms. The kitchen is equipped with everything you will need and more. The open plan living room with central fireplace is stunning and works so well as an entertaining space and equally well as a space to sit and read your book while looking at that view! If you have children their is a great games room, TV/snug room and a wonderful hot tub - we couldn't get our children out of this! It is located just off the slopes so makes for the perfect start and end to your skiing day. I highly recommend a stay at Chalet Les Hirondelles - you will never want to stay anywhere else again!

Excellent Chalet. You will not be disappointed.

We have just returned from a week at Les Hirondelles, and wished we could have stayed longer. This chalet really is superb. It is spacious, well laid out, excellent facilities, very tastefully decorated, a real luxury experience. The views from the chalet are stunning and really help you unwind. There is plenty to do and see in the area. We enjoyed trips on a mountain railway from nearby Villars, a trip to Montreux and Vevey on lake Geneva, an excursion to a spa bath (there are several to choose from) and the cable car from nearby Barboleuse up to Les Chaux. We also hiked a few times out of the chalet and up to Les Chaux where you will find a cafe with a terrace that we just loved. We would love to return to this place, and without question would try and stay again at Les Hirondelles. You will not be disappointed.

Repeat Booking

Over the last 6 years we have visited Villars for our half term ski holiday and I am yet to see or hear of a better chalet in which to spend a week with the family. The resort itself is all one would expect of a premier Swiss ski town but all the while maintaining a unique charm and character. Les Hirondelles matches such a setting with consummate ease, not only does it have charm and character but an understated yet immediately apparent feeling of luxury and style. The layout of the chalet makes it ideal for larger or smaller groups wheteher they are feeling social or looking for post-piste downtime. There are light and airy double bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, an open plan kitchen, dining room and sitting room that has a communal yet spacious feel with a cosy log fireplace as a centrepiece. This room enjoys the everchanging and inspiring views to the mountains as seen in the photographs. This year I felt the benefits of the sauna and hot tub bath after a day on Villars' scenic slopes (growing older!), the children enjoyed winding down in the TV room, slouching on beanbags with a DVD on the widescreen television. The owners Denese and Ian can accomodate most requests and this year recommended an excellent restaurant (L'Etable) for lunch - it was delicous and a short ski from the house. We had 6 days of blue sky skiing as well! Les Hirondelles is impossible to fault.

Luxurious for skiers and non skiers.

We arrived at the chalet, after a long tiring drive. The chalet was clean and inviting. The cupboards were stocked with tea, coffee, milk etc which was very much appreciated. Our party consisted of skiers and non skiers aged from 6 to 66.The ski area is extensive and suitable for skiers of different abilities. There are 2 runs out of the chalet .The first involves a shortish walk uphill, then a gentle downhill ski to the chairlift. The other route is a short walk downhill onto the piste that now leads directly to the gondola station. (Previously the piste terminated in the village square, some distance from the gondola) The ski back to the chalet involves either a shortish downhill walk from the piste or a very short off piste run to within meters of the chalet door. For the non skiers, a 5minute drive to Barboleuse or 10 minutes to Villars gave access to a variety of mountain restaurants via the gondola and venicular. The chalet is tastefully furnished with attention given to comfort. The beds were comfortable and the on suites all had baths, which were appreciated at the end of a long day ski-ing. The kitchen is well equipped with everything one needs to cook for a large party of ten. There is a TV room with sofa and bean bags where the children would chill out and enjoy a film or their favourite TV programme. ( All UK freeview channels plus innumerable Swiss/French/German channels)The lounge is comfortable with a lovely log fire in the middle of the room. Everyone enjoyed the amenities the chalet had to offer, including the spa and sauna. We also enjoyed the New Year celebrations. We all stayed up until 1o'clock watching the fireworks in all the surrounding mountain villages and down in the valley. Spectacular! Can't wait to go back!

Luxus-Chalet in Traumlage

A perfect skiing holiday!

This is a stunning chalet, as good as you can expect from the pictures and more! Light, spacious interior in all rooms, tasteful decoration, functional kitchen, play room for the children,a nice TV room to watch movies. It is 5 min drive from the village but we did not feel need to go there more than once or twice, we felt we had everything we needed in the chalet, where we could eat dinner and talk by the fireplace or enjoy the hot tub and sauna after a day on the pistes. The slopes are indeed very close; we preferred to take a car 500 m up the road and start skiing from there to the L'Etable restaurant from where a chair lift takes us to the top, or one can cross over to the slopes above Villars. We would then all ski down to the chalet and send a volunteer to walk up to the car and bring it back, thus saving walking with the ski boots which you have to do if you ski down to Barboleuse gondola. We also enjoyed walks in moon boots on the runs and paths above the chalet, very pleasant after a long dinner. The 3 young children we had with us, aged 3, 7 and 10 loved the chalet and had enough room to play without being in the way of everybody, we felt the place is safe for them and there were lots of toys and children books to keep them busy for a week. One world of advise if you don't go there with a 4x4 - take snow chains even if the car rental company charges you for winter tires- while the Swiss do clean the road , it is a challenge to go up and down after a day or more of heavy snowfall, so better be prepared. We were 3 families, of which one a couple without children and the other 2 with children ; there was enough room for all of us, we could have even fitted 1-2 more people if parts of the same families. This is a wonderful chalet and we would gladly stay there again.

Stunning 5* chalet in a great location

We had the most fantastic Easter skiing break at this beautiful chalet. The location is stunning with outstanding mountain views from almost every room. After a fun day on the slopes, it was great to come back to such luxury...beautiful bathrooms, amazing hot-tub room and comfortable stylish bedrooms. The chalet is equipped and decorated to the highest standard and looks like it could be gracing the covers of any interiors magazine! We found it to be exceptionally clean and well maintained, with detailed inormation about everything we needed. We took our two small boys (who loved the hot tub!) and everything about the chalet was very family/child friendly, in spite of being so luxurious. The position of the chalet made ski in/ski out possible which was wonderful and we found Villars skiing to be perfect for a family skiing trip. All in all we couldn't have asked for better accommodation and we would wholly recommend it to anyone.

Can't wait to go back

Only 48 hours since we left Les Hirondelles and already we are plotting our return! This chalet is truly top notch with heart-stirring views that have to be seen to be believed. The interior is just as impressive – all the facilities are fantastic and it is clear that the owners splurged on the best of the best down to the last details (as always, the little things make all the difference: fantastic shower pressure, great soundproofing between the bedrooms, strong wifi signal…). The drive from Geneva is quick & easy and Villars has everything you need for a perfect holiday without the chaotic frenzy of one of the bigger ski resorts…though honestly we were so enamoured of the views and the Jacuzzi that it was hard to drag ourselves beyond the front door. Thanks to the helpful guidance of property manager Christophe we had no trouble arranging babysitting, taxis, chefs, etc. We are eager to return in the summer months to see the region in a different light. NB: I have worked in luxury travel for many years and would not hesitate to send my most discerning clients here.

Back again ... nowhere better

For the third time in a row we have decided to return to Les Hirondelles for our half-term family ski trip. We find neither any motive nor have any desire to look elsewhere. The reasons why I love this chalet are listed in previous "Henry F" reviews but, if anything, this year the chalet seemed even more luxurious yet all the while retaining the welcoming homeliness of a family house. There are children's toys and books in a separate play area with table football for any competitive parents! Also a very cosy TV room with vast beanbags to curl up in. The chalet is comfortable yet uncluttered with several areas for the grown-ups to unwind after a day on the slopes (my favourite is the hot tub - sauna area). The bedrooms and bathrooms (en-suite, under floor heating) are spacious and very comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped and a chef can be provided by Denese on request if needed. Our children have really benefitted from the Ecole de Ski Villars, who offer very high quality skiing instruction at reasonable rates. The tuition ends with a wonderful medal ceremony in the village for proud parents with their cameras. Again the owner Denese organised a nanny for the week who was engaged with the children, prompt and varied her entertainment daily. All of the above leaves one free to ski the extensive slopes from Villars to Les Diablerets. This year the snow was the best we have seen in 20 years of skiing and we were delighted to enjoy it from Les Hirondelles. Choosing the perfect place for a ski holiday is a tough decision, thankfully we made it three years ago. 5 stars....

Brilliant!

We spent a week in Les Hirondelles in February 2011 with a party of 10, 4 over 55's and 6 thirtysomethings. The "youngsters" are all lunatic skiers who found plenty of excitement on the extensive interlinking pistes, including the glacier. We also had 2 non-skiers who very much enjoyed the quality of the chalet and the possibility to join us up the mountain via the fenicular railway from Villars. In particular L'Aberge restaurant which has its own train stop half way to the top is a great lunchtime experience. "Best rosti in the world". There are two ways of ski-ing in and out of the chalet, a "low" route down the hill or a "high" route which we found very useful as the snow low down that week was not of the best (it was unusually poor throughout the Alps at that time) Les Hirondelles is a very luxurious chalet, clearly used by the owners and kept to a very high standard accordingly. The bedrooms and bathrooms in particular were the best I have experienced in many years of chalet holidays. The best aspect is undoubtedly the views. Sunset accross the valley watched from the hot tub was a pure joy! Denese also organised a cook and assistant to cater for us on four of the evenings, a delightful and very competent couple who run a restaurant during the summer months . We will come again!

Back for more...

We stayed at Les Hirondelles in Feb 2010 (Henry F review) and it was a very easy choice to return. The chalet is still simply stunning but I believe all the superlatives have been used up in the other guest reviews. In the mornings our eldest daughter was looked after at Villars ski school by Arnaud (great instructors and decent rates) while the youngest was cared for impeccably by a nanny the owners put us in touch with. This meant my wife and I were able to explore the great variety of pistes on offer at Villars as well as stopping off to sample delicous vin chauds and treats at the many mountain restaurants. Villars is an excellent resort for all ages and ski levels. The highlight this time round? It was definitiely a red run towards Les Diablerets first thing in the morning...snow perfection....and of course the sauna - hot tub combination back at the chalet in the evening! Counting down the months until next time.

Switzerland in early autumn

A magnificent holiday in a marvellous area during early autumn. . The accommodation at the chalet was more than ample for our friends and ourselves and we all enjoyed the chats and evening meals in the well fitted kitchen and dining room. After walking in the impressive Swiss countryside during the day we benefited from the Jacuzzi and games that were available were well used. Although we did not use bikes some brave souls took theirs on the cable car from Barboleus to the top of the mountain and then rode a speedy way down; a drop of over 1000 metres. The chalet overlooks some astonishing alpine scenery. The deep valley lies below high mountains, some still with snow on the tops. These made for beautiful bright red sunsets which we all enjoyed. It is located above the village of Barboleus which is easily accessible and boasts a small supermarket, coffee and cake shop and a very informative and helpful tourist office as well as having tram access to Bex and Villars. We all reluctantly left after ten days but it had been a terrific holiday.

DREAM HOLIDAY

Stunning accommodation, stunning location - what more can you ask! We had ten days of glorious weather in early Autumn and can only imagine the splendour when the snow is on the ground. The spotlessly clean fixtures and fittings are all five-star quality and the ever-changing panoramic views, from its elevation, are absolutely astounding. The pretty village of Barboleuse has a well stocked supermarket, a coffee shop with cakes to die for and a Tourist Information Office where at this time of year you can purchase discounted travel cards that cover all buses, trains and cable cars in the immediate area - a major saving for walkers like us to get to high level. A memorable holiday, would recommend it to anyone - shame it had to end.

Views to die for...

Had a fantastic stay here in the winter season. Chalet is very roomy for 10, tastefully decorated and appeared to have all new furnishings - very comfortable. Superb views, ski-in/out access to slopes provided you can ski a little. You will need a car but position on mountain makes it worth it. We used a nannying service a couple of times recommended by the owners, which was very useful. Hot tub and sauna were great - lockable door so safe with kids around. Resort has varied skiing, good ski school for kids and isn't too far from Geneva. Would definitely go back.

Family Luxury!

We stayed for 10 wonderful days at Les Hirondelles and it was hard to leave. The chalet enjoys a magnificent setting with panoramic views of the Alps (the photos do not do it justice). On a sunny morning a highlight was to take breakfast on the expansive balcony, a perfect way to start ones day. Inside the chalet has been recently renovated to a very high standard with a comfortable sitting room and a lovely warm fire set in the middle, apres ski heaven. There was plently of space for the children to enjoy their toys and although we were a large party the property has plenty of room for a decent sized group. The bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and well appointed, so nice to have a proper bath tub after energetics up the mountain. Nearby Villars is a pretty village with all the bars and restaurants one would expect in a premier Swiss resort and the ski area is well serviced by a comprehensive lift system. My highlight of the stay? Enjoying a jacuzzi and a glass of wine in the spa looking out at the mountains with the children tucked up in bed!! Highly recommended and will be certain to stay again.

Awesome Mountain Chalet!

What a fabulous house! Two adult siblings and their spouses and five small children enjoyed five magical days together exploring the region (highlights for the kids included the mini golf park, watching the dozens of cows all around the area, and Glacier 3000 and the Argentine run for the adults!), playing endless games of monopoly (thanks for stocking the house with so many games!), eating delicious meals at the huge kitchen table, and cooking in the extremely well-stocked kitchen. Everyone had enough space to spread out and we all slept well. Ian was wonderfully accessible any time we had questions. We will 100% be back! Thank you so much again!
