We visited from NZ, staying 6 nights and look forward to coming again! It was particularly tranquil, peaceful and private as well as being nicely presented. The bird life was great to listen to and the rainforest enchanting. We also loved being so close to the delightful Bangalow village and managed to coincidentally time our stay with the annual Billy Cart race - great to experience!Gill and Peter were the ideal hosts and we were made to feel very comfortable. We could not recommend this place more highly!

Stayed for a week at the apartment. What a quiet and relaxing stay! Set in a tranquil tropical forest just out of Bangalow Village. Highly recommend for Byron lovers who have a car and don't mind a small drive to feel the relaxation of the hinterland.
Lovely place, beautifully appointed in a tranquil bush setting. Would definitely book again next time we visit Bangalow. Thanks Gill and Peter for your hospitality.

Would not recommend this place! We understand that this place is in a rainforest, but there’s a difference between damp and mould. It was a pretty shocking stay unfortunately, the heavy smell of mould was really intense! It really didn’t help that the layers of dust all over the walls and paintings was thick!! Very uncomfortable to sleep without getting dusty mould smell with every breath, did not feel tranquil! The bathroom clearly had painted over mould spots, same as under the air cons was either layers of dust or mould or both.We were advised to turn air purifier and dehumidifier of 2 air cons, on at all times. Which isn’t ideal as the place needed wayy more help!**No washing machine in this place! It can be difficult to see positive in this place, but there is! the bed were very comfortable, supportive and clean.Last review was in Nov2025, what’s happened since? Was there damage that wasn’t reported? Our next stop accommodation was in the middle of Lismore and the place there smelled incredibly beautiful and fresh. A far cry from this place, unfortunate, but true!

Thank you for your feedback.
We were sorry to read about your less than 5-star experience at our hinterland rainforest retreat. We value all constructive feedback and take it seriously as we aim to provide every guest with a wonderful stay.
That said, your comments were surprising, as none of our 40 recent guests raised similar concerns. Our property consistently receives exceptional reviews, averaging 10/10 on this platform, 4.98 on another.
In response, we immediately arranged an inspection by a respected local specialist, Adam from The Mould Guy. He found no serious issues: gutters, roofing, and ceilings were in good condition, with no signs of moisture ingress. Thermal imaging showed no mould contamination, giving a very low rating of 1.5 (on a scale where 10 is extreme). No mould was found on walls, doors, or furnishings.
Minor surface mould was noted on bathroom cornices, which was promptly cleaned with a non-toxic solution, and a preventative treatment was applied throughout. All recommended preventative measures have since been implemented, and the inspection report is available to future guests.
Following your feedback, we also carried out a full deep clean of the property.
As stated in our listing, laundry access is only available for longer stays, not for two-night bookings.
We want all guests to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings, and we’re very sorry this was not your experience. Please accept our sincere apologies.
We really enjoyed our stay over the weekend. The apartment was gorgeous and cosy and Gill had pre-heated the room which was so lovely to come into on a cold winter night! The location is excellent, only 5-10minutes from Bangalow and close enough to Brunswick, Mullumbimby, Byron and Lennox to do plenty of exploring. Gill and Peter were lovely and we hope to stay again soon

This is a beautiful secluded and comfortable find in a gorgeous location. Listening to the birds was lovely, and the apartment was modern with thoughtful touches.
We loved it enough for two visits within a month!
We will be returning in the future, a big thanks to owners for being so helpful and friendly, making our stay so enjoyable.

This was a wonderful property, very peaceful and relaxing. The apartment was very spacious and comfortable. The kitchen was very well equipped (despite no stove or oven) with excellent outdoor bbq, and so had everything we needed. Communication with hosts was excellent and very helpful. Lots to see and do in the local area. Highky recommend!

Thank you Teresa for this lovely review. We so appreciate the feedback and look forward to hosting you again some time.
We found the apartment was very well fitted out. We received some very good tips for things to do in the area and were asked to “crack” the bathroom window to allow air to circulate during showering. We found the apartment to have a pervading odour of mildew. Perhaps due to its location beneath the main house & its shaded westerly aspect. Perhaps this could be addressed…

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback.
We are so pleased that you had a wonderful stay and enjoyed our recommendations of local highlights to explore and places to eat, and that you found the apartment well appointed to meet your every need. You were so fortunate with your timing, missing the previous two weeks of unusually heavy rain.
You feedback has reminded us that it is time for our annual pruning of surrounding shrubs and ferns. Due to the prolific lush vegetation growth on our rainforest property, this certainly is an important activity to keep the accommodation airy, light, ventilated and sunny.
For clarification for future guests, there is no need to 'crack' the window but we do ask that guests turn on the extractor fans when showering to minimise any build up of steam and humidity.
We enjoyed our chats about your travels and Gill especially appreciated your kind encouragement with her upcoming knee surgery.
Thank you and kind regards, Gill and Peter.
About the host
Hosted by Gill Sutherland
Originally from South Africa and New Zealand, we met in London in our early twenties. We are avid travellers having both visited over 100 countries to date. Now in our early seventies, we returned to Australia 8 years ago after spending the previous 15 years working in Amman, Jordan and Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Although Sydney had been our home base for much of the last 35 years, we found on our return that big city life had lost its appeal and so headed north in search of sun, surf and community. We bought Somervaille, a 15 acre property of predominantly rain forest and native bush. In 2017 and soon thereafter started hosting guests. The last two years we once again headed overseas to continue our travels, exploring, hiking and cycling on 5 of the 7 continents. We returned in November 2023 and are excited to once again start hosting here at Somervaille.
