The island is connected to the mainland by two bridges. Starting in 1620, the first proper houses were built on Krautsand, constructed on earthen mounds (wurten) to provide protection against the Elbe’s storm surges. It wasn’t until 1976 that Krautsand was enclosed by dikes.
