What makes this property unique
What makes this home especially unique begins with its origins. The original structure dates all the way back to the 1770s, when it was first built as a log cabin—long before Kentucky was even declared a state. Walking through the home, you are quite literally stepping into early American history. Over time, the home grew alongside the town itself. In the late 1800s, significant additions were made, including the living room, front entryway, bunk room, master bedroom, and kitchen. Then in the 1970s, the second floor was added, introducing two additional bedrooms and bathrooms. Each era left its mark, creating a layered, lived-in charm that you simply can’t replicate in modern construction.
Beyond its architectural story, this home carries a deeply personal legacy. It was the childhood home of the grandfather of current owner Gilbert Brown, making it not just historic, but meaningful. That connection to family and heritage is felt throughout the space, giving guests a sense that they are part of something enduring and special.
The name BlackBerry Alley Retreat itself tells a story. Located beside the quaint BlackBerry Alley, the home also pays tribute to Thornbush BlackBerry Whiskey, a brand founded by Gilbert Brown. Thornbush is inspired by a biblical folktale of St. Michael and The Devil—a story of contrast, tension, and balance. That same spirit is reflected in the home: rustic yet refined, historic yet comfortable, peaceful yet centrally located.
And that location truly sets this Airbnb apart. Being right in downtown Bardstown means you can park your car and forget it. Step outside your door and you’re within walking distance of some of the town’s best restaurants, bars, shops, and bourbon experiences.
