Skälsnäs Estate
Horses and sheep graze on an estate that once belonged to Gustav Vasa. If you enjoy nature, animals, water, and forests, and want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, this is the perfect place for you.
From Skälsnäs, you can choose from a wide variety of experiences. Stay for a week or longer and take day trips into the beautiful Småland countryside, go on extended fishing trips, and explore Sweden’s southernmost lock in Åby, with the stunning lakes and natural waterways beyond. The latter is especially enjoyable on the steamboat Thor, with its original steam engine from 1887—a real experience!
Fishing Waters
We have 380 ha of fishing waters around the Skälsnäs peninsula, in the northern part of Lake Helga, extending to “Åsnen” Småland’s second-largest lake, with 55 km² of fishing waters, and part of the “Mörrumsån” watershed. Lake Helga is fed by springs and marshlands in the southern Småland highlands. The water is of high quality. The lake is quite deep, especially in the northern part, reaching depths of up to 26 metres. Coniferous and deciduous forests extend right down to the lake’s shores.
Fish
Lake Helga is abundant in perch, pike, and zander. Bream, tench, roach, eel, burbot, and rudd are also common. In addition, there are brown trout in Lake Helga, though not as frequently.
Fishing
In winter, you can fish for perch and pike from the ice using special equipment. Catching burbot (Trüsche) in winter can also be quite appealing. When the ice melts, the season for pike fishing begins, which is mainly in the spring and fall. During the summer, trolling for walleye, pike, perch, and possibly even brown trout is very rewarding. Perch, bream, roach (Plötze), and bleak are best caught with a fishing rod.
Fishing Rules
The fishing licence you purchase allows you to fish anywhere in Lake Helgasee, even outside our designated waters. The minimum size for pike, brown trout, and zander is 40 cm. Zander may be caught from June through September. Fishing is prohibited in certain sensitive areas of Lake Helga.
