Enjoyable Stay!!

We really enjoyed our time at this location. Our only ask would be to have a box of Kleenex available but other than that, the place was great!!

Awesome Cabin close to trails

We loved our stay with Karin. The House was a downstairs apartment with two bedrooms. The location was only 18 minutes from the airport and close to downtown. I loved it.

Great Location - Beautiful Home

Tremendous owner, excellent communication. Home was well laid out and in a perfect location. Easy walk to the beach, Shakespeare in the park. Back deck was peaceful and was enjoyable with the propane fire pit Would certainly stay here again! 🙂

Wonderful stay!!

This place is simply fantastic! Hosts were so kind and accommodating! I swear they have everything you could ever need in here. From cooking supplies, to storage space, etc. We were so comfortable here. Not to mention the location is pristine! It is a very private residence, but steps away from awesome trails and Sandy beach. Hope to be back one day!

Trip of a lifetime

We loved this vrbo. It is in Douglas away from the cruise ship tourists. We immensely enjoyed the historical site literally in the backyard of this vrbo. The historic treadmill mine has placards up around the area and the remnants of the mine are clearly visible all over the area. It was fascinating. The beach is a quick walk through the woods and the old mine site. The steps to the beach might be dangerous for those not sure footed but the beach is a quick drive. Our stay could not have been better.

Great Juneau stay!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Karin and Sanjay’s lower level apartment. The two bedrooms were perfect accommodations for three adults with room to spare. (Added bonus in the second bedroom: a wonderful library.) Having family already in Juneau during our week there, it proved a comfortable spot to share with them, both for a meal and for relaxation, games, and a movie. The kitchen was well appointed and we ate most meals in during our stay. I found every item I looked for when preparing meals. Yes, there is a coffee grinder! The trails literally out the door were a welcome bonus. Quick walk to the woods, the beach, and the playground. We now will think of Douglas Island as the place to stay when visiting the Juneau area. Many thanks to delightful hosts!

Nice rustic Juneau habitat

Overall, a nice place for people in good health. The driveway is very steep, the toilet and bathtub have steps to get up to them. The place has a dark wood finish and minimal lighting. That said, this was a warm, tidy, and otherwise comfortable apartment. It is below the owner's house which is busy with children and a dog, but they were friendly and helpful. The porch is covered and has an outdoor grill and a gaslit table that is very nice to sit around in the evening. It is at the end of the road on Douglas Island so is quiet and woodsy. Overall quite nice, but it would be challenging for anyone with bad hips or knees. Overall, a good value for us.

More Than What We Expected

Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your beautiful cabin. This was everything we pictured Alaska to be. We felt warm and cozy. We appreciated the kitchen was stocked with spices, paper towels, dish soap, etc., the linens were high quality, and everything smelled very clean.

Great little apartment

We just returned from a 6 night stay here. Location was great-a quiet place in a quiet neighborhood just off great hiking trails and a quick walk to the beach. There are a few areas through the abundant trees to see the waterfalls down the mountain on Juneau side of the canal. There was plenty of room inside to stretch out and relax, we cooked breakfast every morning and often brought food home for dinner. Our hosts were easily available but gave us our privacy, which is always a concern with owners on the property. There was the occasional noise, but it was happy kids sounds which are always welcome. Washer and dryer were helpful too after a weeks worth of dirty clothes on arrival! We would not hesitate to return. Thank you Karin and Sanjay!

Great place to stay

I would recommend this place, the owner Karin was great she made sure we were all set before our trip. Everything that we needed was there. The place was clean the deck and outside area was a fantastic addition. During our stay Karin even added an outdoor gas fireplace I wish we would of had time to enjoy. The location was excellent there are hiking trails located directly behind the house that was an added bonus. Great place

Five Stars!

Located on the south end of Douglas Island and surrounded by woods, the property is hidden and insulated from outside intrusion. Peace, tranquility and restfulness is what you get when you return every night from your daily adventures in and around Juneau. Though close to everything that Juneau offers, when you're relaxing at the Retreat, you feel mountains away. Everything we needed was provided even without ever asking. The property was kept clean and tidy with everything having its place. The two bedrooms provided comfortable beds. The living space was more than adequate for anything from post-adventure stretching, morning yoga or simply reading. We were out quite a bit and only on one occasion did we fix dinner utilizing the full kitchen. The kitchen had everything we needed to create a delicious feast. The back deck and well maintained landscaping opens up towards the Gastineau Channel beyond the trees. And down the backstairs lead you to hiking trails up to mountain tops and through the old Treadwell mine. Given another opportunity to stay at the Sandy Beach Retreat, we will certainly do you. And so should you!

Pleasant, cabin like lodging in lovely wooded setting

This is a great spot if you are a nature lover, who likes walks in the beach/woods nearby with many trails, and who wants a more authentic small town stay away from the cruise ship craziness of downtown Juneau. The space is a day-lighted basement apartment that looks into a nice garden & woods. Space was super clean & kitchen well equipped. Bed comfy. Hosts very friendly & informative. 4 (vs 5) Stars only because apt was a bit dark due to wood ceiling & paneling (a few more lights would fix!) and that no windows could be opened to let in breeze.

Perfect in every way!

This cabin get away was perfect for our stay in Juneau. Our main focus was fishing and the location on Douglas Island was ideal, close enough to downtown Juneau that you could drive over for dinner or the evening, yet far enough away that you didn't get overwhelmed with the cruise ship traffic. There was a short little hike down to the beach and I loved being so close to a sandy beach and the view across the channel was beautiful. The cabin was very comfortable. There was a very comfortable bed, nice furnishings and plenty of hot water, and Karin and Sanjay made us feel very welcome. They anticipated every need of the Alaskan traveler, from bug spray to bear spray and everything in between. They even let us borrow their boot dryers to dry out wading boots before packing them in our suitcase and loaned us the use of their big fishing net.

If you were spending any time in Juneau Alaska then Douglas Island is the place you want to be

Sanjay and Karin have gone out of the way to make this rental truly like home. It is in the lower basement of the house and has every amenity you could possibly want or need I was impressed with the cleanliness of the property, The bed in the pillows were extremely comfortable after a long fun day of adventures , it was like sleeping in your own bed. The beach is just minutes away down a beautiful short trail. You can see the crew ships as they pass by and give a honk of the horn. The beach walk goes for quite a distance and you will love to explore all the trails of the Treadwell mining trail system. It was definitely an adventure walking the trails. Every day brought new trails and old ruins of the mining industry on Douglas Island. Most people that live in Juneau have never experienced this Wonderful hiking, jogging, sightseeing trail system with lots of eagles and beautiful views. We had great weather the 10 days in July 2019 as it was in the 80s . I was so happy that there was a cooler as we packed our beverages and snacks and headed out for the day. There are many extra things available for you to use such as beach chairs beach mats coffee pot laundry services laundry detergent beer spray available pots pans everything you would need is supplied Sanjay and Karen are very sweet and accommodating. They also have two young children and you can tell they are loved and brought up very respectful . They in the process of replacing the decks above the back porch at the rear of the house as well as another apartment that is above the garage I would give this place 10 out of 10 stars for the convenience to get around town, cleanliness and overall satisfaction

Clean and warm cabin by beach and trails

This is a very special place! Access to a beautiful beach and a network of forested and historic trails is just a few steps outside the front door. Spectacular views of the mountains above Juneau from the deck- all just a short drive to downtown. The cabin is clean, warm, and well-equipped with those little things that can be so important to travelers, and the owners are friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended!

About the host

Hosted by Karin McCoy

Host profile image
Karin and Sanjay live in the upstairs portion of the house with their two children. They strive not to intrude on the privacy of their guests, yet are easily reached should their assistance be needed.

Why they chose this property

We have lived in Juneau since 2005, and are happy to share our local knowledge of the area. We love the location of our property "at the end of the road" on Douglas. The house is unique in that it is one of the few log homes in Juneau, the logs for which were pulled from the adjacent forest. The property is nestled at the rainforest edge above Sandy Beach and the historic Treadwell townsite and trails, and right around the corner from the Mt. Jumbo trailhead. We are a very quiet location away from the hustle, but still just a short walk to downtown Douglas and a 10 minute drive to downtown Juneau. And while our location has a lovely nestled-in-nature feel, it is fully equipped with everything you might need, including wifi, full kitchen and washer/dryer.

What makes this property unique

This home has uniquely easy access to some of the most stunning walks and hikes in Juneau. There are private stairs leading from the yard directly down to Treadwell trail, and you can be at the best beach in Juneau in just a couple minutes! You can sit in the apartment or on the deck looking at the mountains and listening to the adjacent babbling brooks while watching the eagles soar or the cruise ships slide by. Mt. Jumbo trailhead is a quick 5 minute walk away, and there is great hiking or trail running opportunities along the Treadwell Ditch trail. If you you want to be nestled in nature, but close to the action, this is your spot!
