Bioclimatic Cave House - Vothonas traditional village

A traditional cave house with 2 bedrooms in the traditional village of Vothonas. The village is situated in the centre of the island about 3 klm from the nearest beach, 2 klm from the airport / 8 klm from the port and 4 klm from the capital of the Island, Fira Town. Minimal decoration with traditional touches, it has a fully equipped kitchen with fridge, washing machine, dish washer, oven, microwave, coffee maker, toaster etc. It has 1 bathroom, a living room with a sofa and a built-in seating area and a dining table. There is the choice of the sofa or an extra single bed for the 5th person that can be place either in the master bedroom or in the living room. It is also equipped with hairdryer, iron and iron board, tv with dvd player. It has a veranda with table and chairs and a small private terrace with village view. Nearest public parking area is 80 meters away. Access to the house is only on foot as you need to walk through the narrow streets of the village. Cave houses are characterized by their ability to preserve a stable interior temperature throughout the year (bio-climatic).
The property is ideal for relaxed holidays for serenity-seekers and peaceful memorable moments, in one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. It combines the unique quietness of an isolated Greek village, only a few minutes drive from the buzz of the well-known Santorinian towns, full of life and energy.
Either you are planning a family holiday or an escape-trip for two or even a get-away with good friends, the all-time classic cave house combining the comforts of a modern apartment, will definitely make your holidays unforgettable.
Since it is up in the village, a private transport mean is necessary, either a vehicle or a motorcycle.
In less than 10-minute walking, you may find one of Santorini's famous steak house restaurant 'KRITIKOS' and the Koutsogiannopoulos winery in another 5-minute walk.
A ten-minute drive will take you either to a family-oriented beach 'Monolithos' or driving to the opposite side the famous 'Kamari' beach with black sand and many restaurants, beach front bars and tourist shops.

If you want a taste of real Greek living, this place is for you. Nothing fancy, yet it has everything you need. The owners are quick to respond & are as sweet as ever! The beds are comfortable & I slept like a baby in the cave. The house was very accommodating tucked away from the hustle & bustle. Maria, Emma & Banos were fabulous! We couldnt have had better homeowners! They gave us history of the land & the house & made us feel like family.The walk up to the house is steep. I'm 63 with a bad knee & I was fine.Overall, I highly recommend this charming cave.

We were so impressed with the Cave home. It is exactly like the pictures, but better!! It is hard to describe how unique and beautiful this place is from any vacation home we've stayed in all our travels. The owners, sisters Emma, Alex and Anna (off site) were so gracious and accommodating during our stay . You will not be disappointed . A must try. Thank you again Rob and Eleanor Canada Note: if you rent a car , which is a good idea to see ethe island, make it a small one. Not much space in the parking lot.:)

Tolle Wohnung, nette Gastgeberin

Vorab: Bei Ankunft auf Santorini ist die Wohnung wirklich nicht leicht zu finden. Das wissen die Gastgeberinnen und geben detaillierte Infos, mit Fotos, damit man den richtigen Weg einschlägt. Wir meinten, dass es trotzdem mit Google Maps einfacher ist - falsch gedacht! Vothonas ist nicht digital kartiert, weswegen man zuverlässig vom GPS in die Irre geführt wird. Mein Tipp: In Google Maps die "Kritikos Taverna" eingeben, und genau dort von der Hauptstraße nach rechts abbiegen. Dann einfach den weiteren Beschreibungen der Gastgeberin folgen - voila- kein Problem mehr. Zur Wohnung selbst: Sie ist sauber, großzügig, super ausgestattet, auch mit Geschirrspüler, Waschmaschine und Trockner, liebevoll eingerichtet, man kann sich richtig wohl dort fühlen. Gleichzeitig ist man weg vom Massentourismus mitten in einem urigen santorinischen Dorf, in der Mitte der Insel, was die Entfernungen klein macht: die weitestmögliche Entfernung sind 15 km, das meiste ist in 15 min mit dem Auto erreicht. Besser geht es nicht! Ein echter Ort zum Entspannen und Wohlfühlen. Emmanouela ist eine höchst angenehme und freundliche Gastgeberin. Das fängt damit an, dass bei Ankunft ein kleiner Vorrat an Lebensmitteln und Reinigungsmitteln da war - wenn man, wie es häufig der Fall ist, abends müde ankommt, muss man nicht zum nächsten noch offenen Supermarkt hetzen. Super! Da sie selbst Tourguide ist, lässt man auch am besten den Reiseführer in der Tasche - sie hat eh die besten Tipps und gibt sie auch gerne weiter. Wir haben fast alle ihre Vorschläge tatsächlich aufgegriffen. Wärmste Empfehlung für einen tollen Urlaub.

Amazing Place For Anniversary

Thank you Ms. Alexandra for being a great host! I cannot thank you enough for arranging our transportation to and from the port, scheduling our rental, providing all details for the activities around Santorini and helping us communicate with the professional photography company. Our 3rd year anniversary celebration was flawless because of you. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your gorgeous comfortable home that had so much more and everything we needed. For other guess: our stayed was (22-24 September) were tourism was at a lower peak. July/August/1st half of September is super crowded and cannot imagine driving a car during the peak of tourism season. This is an amazing cave house tucked away in a quiet village away from busy streets and tourist crowds. I used one of the two bedrooms but the cave house will easily accommodate two couples with two teenagers. There’s plenty of room for everyone and the pictures do not do justice to this beautiful comfortable home. Living room, Kitchen, fridge and bathroom were immaculate and Super clean. Outdoor patio was cozy, comfortable and private. Santorini streets are narrow and while getting a car is convenient an ATV was the safest perfect solution for the crowded busy streets where parking was quite difficult. With an ATV the cave house is 5 minutes away to the Caldera’s sunset parking spot, 5 - 10 minutes away from mini markets, 18 minutes away to Santo Winery, 25 - 30 minutes to Fira and 40 -45 minutes to Oia. We enjoyed the ATV rides around the island, how close we could park to our final destinations and filling up the gas tank with 8 euros in 3 days of riding everywhere. The ATV had a storage box to accommodate some of my shopping items so a backpack was a great addition. If you stay in this cave gem you will need some sort of transportation to get around. If you bring large suitcases be mindful that you will have a 40 - 50 meters walk uphill and stairs, but worth it. Everyone talks about the sunsets in Santorini but the sunrise in this gem private terrace was stunning and romantic! If you like privacy, peace and quiet after a busy day shopping and walking in crowded Fira and Oia then this cave is perfect! for you!

Everything was great until we had been in the cave house for one hour. At that point one of us was having asthma and another had a serious allergic reaction. Our host informed us that mildew is normal for a cave and the booking was non-refundable. We moved to a hotel. This property is for mildew lovers only.

Nous avons adoré la maison qui est typique de Santorin et très bien située pour découvrir l’île. Excellent property - amazing property management

We had an amazing time in Santorini and our stay in this Cave Home was a big part of it! Our host, Emma, gave us several great suggestions about activities and places to go and even arranged several of them for us. The home is in a quiet area and perfect for getting an authentic experience. There is plenty of room in the home and the kitchen is super convenient for breakfast and snacks. We were able to walk to some restaurants and a grocery store. I highly recommend staying here!

Authentic Experience

What an amazing property and hosts. Alexandra and Emmy are gracious and helpful hosts, as was the rest of thier family. The local residents of Vothonas were equally as welcoming and kind. The house itself is well appointed for the perfect home away from home. The property is beautiful, clean, and represented well in the property photos. We enjoyed dining alfresco on the patio in the evening, and coffee on the rooftop terrace in the mornings. The village is as picturesque as you would imagine, so do take time to walk the village and enjoy the lack of crowds. The cave house is in a traditional village, away from the busier tourist areas, but centrally located on the island to make all areas easily accessible. I do agree with prior reviews that a car or transportation is a must; however, most tour groups (we did a wine tour and a catamaran tour) offer pickup at a nearby hotel which is also walking distance from the property. Thank you again Alexandra and Emmy. "The girls" throughly enjoyed our stay, and I know I will most certainly be back.

Lovely lovely space and truly enjoyed the charm of this one of a kind home. ONLY one item that I would say was disappointing - the location as it relates to the city and other high lights of Santorini. A car or a mode of transportation is a must for the bus system in Santorni is overworked. We were so fortunate that we had an amazing driver Nikos that gave us pointers and helped us get to where we need to go . Otherwise we would have felt stranded. A better understanding of transportation a MUST that needs to be added to the description and finding the place is very difficult. Again Nikos came to our rescue!

We loved the property! It was very quiet. I could see myself having meals on the patio. Great proximity to the beach. We only had a short stay but were very happy. It is a bit out of the way but Nick was amazing at getting us to the hot spots on the island. I would definitely recommend! Also would recommend hiring Nick during your stay!!

Extraordinary experience!

Alexandra met us at her cave home after we were picked up at the airport by a transfer she coordinated. Despite it being 1:30am, she spent time with us & told us about the home, things to do & see on the island & recommendations for the restaurants. The home is breathtaking, unique and has all conveniences or a modern home with a feel of peace and rejuvenation! Kitchen is well stocked and grocery market is close by. We got around the island on ATVs, which were instrumental to getting around the island and safer than a car - if you get a car I would recommend a small car. We spent time touring Faro, went to Ia for a sunset and dinner, went to the monestary & lookouts and spent a morning on Sunset Oia catamaran - gorgeous! The catamaran went to the hot springs red and white beaches, snorkelling and we had a delicious lunch on board! Alexandra coordinated all of these tours for us and every person/experience was Extraordinary! We so appreciated the bottle of wine as a welcome so we could have a drink upon our arrival. The patio & rooftop terrace were so lovely and added to our experience when we were at the home. Much rejuvenation! Vothonos & the cave home provide such an experience but are close enough to everything else you would like to see. We went out dancingbone evening to Two Brothers bar in Faro & again had an incredible experience. We were incredibly active but also had some soul rejuvenation time!

Wonderful in every way!

Simply Incredible !!! Having spent 6 wonderful days in Alexandra & Emmy’s beautiful Cave house, no one should look any further for accommodations in Santorini. This home is perfect. Ideally located in the centre of the island in the village of Vothonas, it is very easy to explore the whole island from here. Everything was perfect from the very first moment with exceptional hospitality from these gracious hosts. Having arrived in the evening, the full sized kitchen was stocked with some groceries for breakfast and a bottle of wine so we could just kick back immediately. During our stay, they were always reachable and helpful with any questions we had, as well as giving us outstanding recommendations for restaurants and must see sights on the island. One our last day, the ladies prepared a lovely home cooked meal for all of us to share, as we had a very long travel day ahead of us. Having thought of absolutely everything to make our stay in Santorini just perfect, we can not thank these incredible hosts enough !!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. We very much look forward to coming back, sooner rather than later. Cheers to our new friends !

Delightful Bioclimatic Cave Home and Charming Neughborhood!!

If you prefer to stay apart from the touristy areas of Santorini and appreciate a more authentic village experience, you will be thrilled by the Bioclimatic Cave Home. Alexandra has updated an ancestral family home with creature conveniences, resulting in a comfortable, stylish and warmly intimate space. You will need to be able to navigate narrow cobblestone inclines to enjoy this sumptuous little home. Also, plan on renting a small vehicle— the village pathways are not designed for big cars. I stayed in this clean, lovely home with my niece, but the home could easily accommodate two couples or a family with a couple of kids. Alexandra and her network arranged transportation, provided information and offered helpful suggestions which resulted in an overall extraordinary experience. My 21-yr-old niece was smitten as was I. We feel fortunate to have stayed here. Alexandra’s thoughtfulness In creating this peaceful space is evident. This is a very special place—absolutely loved it and would stay again in a heartbeat!!

Wir (2 Erwachsene, 1 Kind) hatten eine wunderbare Woche in diesem Ferienhaus. Fernab von jedem Trubel und dennoch in zentraler Lage fühlt man sich hier schnell zuhause. Das liegt zum einen an dem gut ausgestatteten und atmosphärischen Domizil selbst (die Fotos fangen es sehr gut ein), zum anderen an der sehr freundlichen Gastgeberin. Alexandra ist ab der Buchung jederzeit für Abstimmungen und Rückfragen erreichbar und kümmert sich auch vor Ort persönlich um die Gäste (Begrüßung, Verabschiedung, auf Wunsch Tipps für Ausflüge + Aktivitäten). Für uns hatte sie sogar einige Lebensmittel eingekauft, nachdem sich unser Flug verspätet hatte. Wir können die Unterkunft wärmstens weiter empfehlen.

Beautiful cave house in fantastic village.

It should have been hard to match the idyllic Cretan villa we'd been staying in for a week before arriving at Alexandra's Santorini cave house--but the cave house had no trouble! The whole setting was perfection, from the house itself (breezy patio and terrace; cool, well-appointed interior) to its traditional Vothonas village surroundings. Our rambles through the twisty, narrow streets led to so many wonderful discoveries: abandoned cave dwellings that looked deliciously haunted, even in full sun, right next to beautifully-kept houses; cats perched picturesquely on whitewashed walls; domed churches; windmills. We were also a very short walk away from a gorge where there's a church built right into the cliff--such a quiet, isolated, lovely spot, and yet so close to home. Thank you, Alexandra and Andreas, for this incredible experience.

An amazingly peaceful place out of the tourist fray

After spending five days in Oia on the cliffs, my partner and I were thrilled to find this little gem of a place in the middle of a real traditional village, something very hard to find anymore in Santorini. The place is beautiful, cool, restful and delightful. It was so wonderful to be in a home instead of a hotel--with amenities like a washing machine and a drying rack, a local phone, wifi, towels and an umbrella for the beach, a fully stocked kitchen and all the other comforts of home. This 400 year old house is carved out of a cave making for a cosy feeling and even temperature even in the hottest or coolest weather. Alexandra and her agent were amazingly helpful and gracious. They left us food and water, they told us where to go (after carefully ascertaining what we were interested in), visited with us. They told us how to avoid the main tourist roads crammed with big buses. Our only wish was that we could have stayed longer. It was a great getaway and a perfect home base. And we couldn't have asked for a better hostess. Alexandra (and her agent) spoke and wrote terrific English. And Alexandra was prompt and very helpful in our pre-rental email exchange. You do need a car to stay there, but the rental agent for the car delivered it to us and we signed the simple papers right in the parking area closest to the house. Then the agent said, "Just leave the car at the airport with the keys under the mat." I've never had such a simple rental car experience. There is a long thin winding road into this village--really only one lane, but cars go in both directions and there were a few blind spots. I was nervous about driving this, but did it just fine day and night--and the only time I ran into someone coming toward me, it was a local and he backed up. I drove slow and things were just fine. In fact, I felt like an expert by the end of our three days. If you're looking for something out of the fray, a peaceful haven to return to at night or just to relax in, this is definitely the place. I will definitely be coming back--and for longer! P.S. We were a couple, but there was a whole other bedroom and a comfy couch we didn't use. This place would definitely accommodate more people or a family.

Perfect property ! Traditional, quiet, beautiful, comfortable,very well located

En anglais et en français ! : A huge thank you to Alexandra and her friend Andreas who received us with a real extreme kindness. The house is a beautiful traditional house Cycladic : white with blue shutters, cave style top with white vaulted ceiling , 2 beautiful terraces. It is ideally located as the center of the island , distances are quickly covered wherever you go. The village is a real typical Santorini village with small white houses staged on the hill, tiny little unbelievable pedestrian streets, beautiful churches with a blue roof. Free parking at 2 minutes walk from the house. Andreas lives near the parking if you need anything . It can organize tours ( boat tour , etc ) . He welcomed us with coffee, the fridge was ready for our breakfast. The house is very quiet as the last height , no noise ! It is extremely well done , nothing is missing , to many types of candles or various types of lighting to dim or not your evenings ! Very romantic if you like. We really had a great time in April , it was warm and beautiful, everything was perfect ! Thank you very much Alexandra and Andreas ! We will come back !!!!!! La maison est une belle maison traditionnelle cycladique: blanche aux volets bleus, de style troglodyte avec haut plafond blanc voûté, 2 belles terrasses. Elle est idéalement située car au centre de l'île, les distances sont rapidement réalisées partout où vous allez. Le village est un vrai village typique de Santorin avec de petites maisons blanches sur la colline, les incroyables minuscules petites rues piétonnes, de belles églises avec un toit bleu. Parking gratuit à 2 minutes à pied de la maison avec toujours de la place. Andreas vit près du parking si vous avez besoin de quoique ce soit. Il peut organiser des visites (de excursions en bateau, etc). Il nous a accueillis avec le café, le frigo était prêt pour notre petit déjeuner !. La maison est très calme car la dernière en hauteur et sur le côté, pas de bruit ! LA maison est extrêmement bien aménagée, rien ne manque, jusqu'au nombreux types de bougies ou différents types d'éclairage pour tamiser ou non vos soirées ! Très romantique si vous le souhaitez. Nous avons vraiment passé un très bon moment en Avril, il faisait chaud et beau, tout était parfait! Merci Alexandra et Andreas! Nous reviendrons !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
