La Casa Vieja - Adorable Hideaway In Marathon, Texas

Take a step back in time to the Old West. It doesn't get much more atmospheric than this, folks. With custom woodwork throughout, this delicately-appointed 950-square-foot home sits on a corner lot and offers a beautiful enclosed private patio/courtyard for privacy. Surrounded by pretty, native desert vegetation, the custom features of this home are far too numerous to mention. Here are a list of just some of them:

~ 10 ft. ceilings
~ Open floor plan
~ Latilla ceiling in living room featuring wood beams with corbels

The home features evaporative cooling and heating units. A new metal fence adds privacy to this exquisite property. Other details worth mentioning include: Completely new electrical and plumbing, insulation in the flooring, walls and ceilings, gas stove and water heater, and a metal roof w/ original tin on sides.

Annual trip

Check-in was super easy! The house and casita were exactly what we were looking for!! We especially loved the closed in porch for our morning coffee. The location was perfect for our daily trips to explore Big Bend and Ft. Davis.

Big Bend Family Vacation

La Casa Vieja worked out great as our home for our family trip to BBNP. The home was a great fit for my family. My teenage sons liked having the separate casita to stay in. We had great weather to hang out in the courtyard by the fireplace in the evenings.

Great place in Marathon!

Home is beautiful and perfect for our family of four. Marathon served as our ‘basecamp’ for big bend (and Marfa) - only regret is. Or staying an extra day to relax and enjoy all the home had to offer!

Good property during cooler months

Lovely and well designed home in Marathon. Bathroom in main house was wonderful. Home does not have central air/heat which is only an issue in the summer months. Bedrooms have window units which get the job done but are noisy. We usually stay at The Gage but needed more room on this trip. Would book again during the Texas winter.

Hiking at Big Bend

We had everything we needed and really enjoyed the courtyard after a day of hiking at Big Bend National Park. This was perfect for my daughter and I. Would definitely book again.

Made our stay in West Texas that much better!

We had a great time staying at this comfortable and very nice house! It was perfectly located between the Big Bend National Park and some interesting small towns in West Texas. We hope to travel back here at some point.

Great Property. Town lacks restaurant options.

The property was perfect place for me and my dad. We both had our own private rooms while the main house gave us a good gathering place for after a long day in Big Bend. Only disappointment was that Marathon doesn't have much restaurant wise during the week.

Second stay

This was our group's second stay at Casa Viejo and it was excellent again. Very comfortable and well-stocked with kitchenware and all the necessities; nicely located at the edge of downtown Marathon and a beautiful straight-shot drive down to Big Bend National Park. Marathon is a great dark skies location and the stars were blazing overhead for the entire stay.

Big Bend getaway

We loved our stay La Casa Vieja! It was the perfect setup for my husband and I and adult daughter with the separate casita. We spent a lot of afternoons in the courtyard. Loved the decor. Host Spencer was very responsive when we had questions. We’ll be back! Great stay!

As is it says

Great location, easy walk to the Marathon amenities and a good drive to Panther Junction. It was a little chilly on arrival but the heaters got it toasty in no time. Fireplace in the courtyard was popular. Kitchen worked out fine for 2 nights/dinner during our stay.

Property was great, our only issue were the barstools were very uncomfortable & that was the only place to sit to eat &/or play boardgames.

Walking Distance to Galleries and Gage!

A wonderful place for both families and couples alike. We stopped on our way into and out of Big Bend. We got refreshed, relaxed, did laundry, and watched TV. All looked forward to returning on our way out. Got up early and sat in private patio and did some star gazing. So close to Gage we ate dinner and played on their chess board.

Perfect for small dogs

Cute, clean, excellent response from management, everything works. The courtyard is perfect for dogs! One of our 3 dogs is an escape artist. The courtyard was so secure even he could not escape! Unfortunately we had overcast skies for 2 of our 3 nights. But a fire in the courtyard fireplace without having to keep a constant eye (or leash) on our little bum made for some perfect evenings after visiting Big Bend N.P. Some decent bfast tacos at the French Grocer and dinner at the 12 gauge restaurant. A nice birthday getaway! I'd recommend staying for longer than 3 nights as there is so much to do.

Nice and comfy at the gateway to Big Bend

This property is very nice! Enclosed courtyard and casita along with a fireplace outside and inside. The main house has a comfy bed and everything you need for cooking. The owner was very responsive when contacted. We had some trash left by the cleaning crew, but they came over the first day and picked it up and she was very nice. If you’re bringing a dog, beware of the burrs! There really is nowhere in Marsthon you can avoid them and they will stick to little paws. Bring some booties! We will definitely return to this place next time we swing through!

Nice Launching Point for Visiting Big Bend National Park

We stayed at Las Casa Vieja for a few night as we visited Big Bend National Park. The house was very clean in a quiet neighborhood. The furnishings were nice; the bed in the main bedroom was comfortable as was the breakfast bar and living room. The kitchen was well stocked; we had all our breakfasts here as well as one dinner. I would recommend getting groceries before arriving (or driving to Alpine) since the store in Marathon has a weird mix of items. We tried to have a fire outside but without kindling we could not get it going. The configuration was a little weird in that you enter the house through either the bedroom or bathroom. It would be nice to have a curtain on the bathroom door; otherwise, when you step out of the shower anyone in the courtyard can see you. Our son called us before coming over to the main house to make sure no one was in the bathroom. The light in the shower did not work; it made taking showers a little dark. I would recommend bringing soap (they only supplied one small bar). My son enjoyed staying in the Casita. He would have spent more time in the Casita if he had somewhere to sit; he only had the bed to sit on. For older children, the Casita provides nice seperation in a secure courtyard. Overall, it was a nice stay and we would stay here again if we ever return to the Marathon area.

About the host

Hosted by Spencer Aaronson

Host profile image
I'm a long-time resident of Southern California who travels often to this part of Texas for leisure purposes myself. In my own travels over the years, I have been the beneficiary of incredible hospitality in the many unique properties where I've had the good fortune of resting my head, so I'm only too happy to return the favor and provide people with their own memorable vacation experiences.

Why they chose this property

After taking a road trip through the Big Bend area several years ago on my way to Memphis, I was hooked on this area. Something about this particular part of the country really resonated with me. I'm not sure if it is the peace and quiet, the wide open spaces, the romance of a lost time, or, perhaps most likely, all of the above. I've been making routine trips to the region since then and finally took the plunge and bought this property. I have a major soft spot for carefully-restored historical properties, and this one definitely fit the bill. A lot of care went into this renovation. I fell in love with it the moment it popped up on a real estate website I refer to. When I made a trip out there and saw it in person, I loved it even more. I have no doubt you'll feel the same.

What makes this property unique

This is a serious step back in time to the Pancho Villa era. But with all the modern amenities and luxuries one has come to expect in these unique properties. Here are just some of them:

~ 10 ft. ceilings
~ Open floor plan
~ Latilla ceiling in living room featuring wood beams with corbels
~ Pressed tin tile ceiling in kitchen
~ Saltillo tile and original refinished hardwood flooring
~ Mesquite custom–built kitchen bar top
~ Kraftmaid hickory cabinets in kitchen
~ Pendant lighting
~ Tiled backsplash
~ Textured walls
~ Kiva fireplace in living room
~ Alhambra-tiled shower and Talavera-tiled sink in bathroom
~ Original, restored antique old Mexico wood church doors (1920) at front entry
~ Spacious closet
~ Private and tranquil courtyard w/additional, outdoor kiva fireplace
~ Shaded front porch

The home features evaporative cooling and heating units. A new metal fence adds privacy to this exquisite property. Other details worth mentioning include: Completely new electrical and plumbing, insulation in the flooring, walls and ceilings, gas stove and water heater, and a metal roof w/ original tin on sides.
