About this property

The Inn at Croftville Road Cottages #5. On the Shore of Lake Superior.

Located only 40 feet from Lake Superior s beach is the Inn at Croftville Road Cottages. This unique and newly crafted building with tall multiple gabled peaks houses 5 vacation suites all with private exterior entrances. The Inn at Croftville Road Cottages #5 provides the gentle sound of breaking waves hitting the shore and spectacular views of Superior. It is designed with romance in mind. This 2-story, 1-bedroom vacation suite has a main level living room and well-equipped full-size kitchen and an upstairs bedroom and bathroom. One enters this suite from a covered porch on the Grand Portage side of the inn. The living room features a romantic wood fireplace with a large raised hearth and firewood, a smart TV and DVD player mounted above the mantle, a dinette set in a bay window looking out to Superior, a radio/CD player, and a futon. The upstairs bedroom has a plush queen bed, a decorative gas stove, and a spa tub for 2 in the bay window looking out to Superior. The luxurious bathroom has access from the stairs landing without entering the bedroom. This four-season inn suite is open all year and has wireless internet access. An artesian well provides excellent water for drinking. The Inn at Croftville Road Cottages #5 sleeps up to 4 people (2 on the futon) with all linens provided.

Rates and Policies:
• Longer stays are better for us as hosts. Many hosts simply require 3 night minimum stays. However, we choose to accept 1 or 2 night short stays but charge more for short stays.
• There is a 20% discount for 7 or more night stays. This discounted rate is included in your original quote when you request a 7 or more night stay.
• We have a 2 night minimum stay on weekends and a 3 night minimum stay on holidays and special events.
• We have no cleaning fee. Our cleaning costs are figured into our nightly rates. We do charge for extra guests.
• We are required to collect 12.375% in state and local sales taxes. Vrbo collects and pays 8.375% of that total. The remaining 4% Vrbo collects for us and we pay to the county. All of these show up as lodging taxes on your quote/bill.
• As hosts, we pay a 5% commission to Vrbo. This has been included in our pricing and will not show up on your quote/bill.

Croftville Road Cottages offers an experience reminiscent of days past when small mom and pop resorts were found all along the North Shore. However, the luxurious inn suites and cozy cottages are among the finest vacation rentals along Lake Superior. Croftville Road Cottages is conveniently located just 3 miles from downtown Grand Marais on the lakeside of scenic Croftville Road known by locals as the "walking road".

Pleasant summer getaway

Super clean and homey! Awesome jacuzzi. Easily one of the coziest, sweetest, most beautiful little home for a few days. The view is amazing, make sure you watch the sunrise! :) and it’s just a short drive to Grand Marais cute little downtown.

We enjoyed our stay in #5. It was very clean. We didn’t use the kitchen, but it seemed well stocked. The location is phenomenal with great views and multiple places to sit outside on property. Check in and out was super simple. The major negative for us was privacy. We enjoyed our jacuzzi tub, but the window on one side was another guest balcony. Same with the window by our bathroom. We thought visiting in the winter when the windows wouldn’t be open and/or people less likely to sit outside would be nice. The other negative was the shower head, if you adjusted the temp before getting in it would spray out the door. We would stay here again if the opportunity arises.

Our Happy Place

We fell asleep every night to the sound of Lake Superior waves (some crashing, others lapping). The short drive from Grand Marais and that walkability of Croftsville Rd. are a big plus. We did most of our own cooking in the well-appointed kitchen, including having friends for dinner one evening. The bedroom with the spa was delightful after hiking. The living/dining room has a wonderful view of the lake. Heated floors and gas (bedroom) and wood (living room) fireplaces keep it very cozy. The staircase requires some thoughtful maneuvering and we wouldn't recommend this suite for someone with disabilities or difficulty with stairs. Our hosts clearly put a lot of thought and artistic savvy into the design and are good administrators as well as very friendly. They live on-site. We signed up already for a return rental next summer.

This would be a 5-star rave review - beautiful setting and almost new, wonderfully appointed apartment - but for their use of perfumed soaps, detergents, and fabric softener that permeated the air both indoors and outdoors. If you are sensitive to perfumes this would, very unfortunately, not be the place for you.

Teresa and Mike Chmelik are the owners and operators of Croftville Road Cottages. They live in the owners quarters of their inn. In an era when most mom and pop resorts along Lake Superior are being closed, Teresa and Mike have built Croftville Road Cottages from a former resort property that had been unoccupied for 10 years. At the same time they have raised their children along Lake Superior in a small town setting and kept outside employment to support themselves while building their business. 2018 marks the first year that Croftville Road Cottages has finally fully supported them. They have done as much of the renovations, repairs, and construction as they can themselves. When that has not sufficed, Teresa and Mike have relied on the help of family, friends, and skilled local craftsmen.

Why they chose this property

Teresa and Mike long dreamed of having a resort on Lake Superior. Grand Marais had always been a special place for them. For Teresa, her parents had met as students at the Grand Marais Art Colony in the early 1950's. For Mike, Grand Marais had always been the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The Chmeliks with the help of their good friends purchased their dream property in July 2003. It was a former resort property unoccupied for 10 years. That summer and fall was spent making the house habitable while living in a borrowed camper trailer until Halloween. The next 3 years were used to clean up the property and extensively renovate the cottages. Croftville Road Cottages opened for business in 2007. In 2011 the Chmeliks decided to reconstruct the house into the main inn for the resort providing living quarters, an office, and 5 vacation suites. In June they bought a travel trailer to live in and serve as an office during the expansion. With a variance granted, the Chmeliks secured financing in June 2013 after the deconstruction and demolition of the old house had already begun. Construction for the inn began in August. The Chmeliks moved into the partially completed inn in October 2016. The first 2 vacation suites in the inn opened in June 2017 and remaining 3 in July 2018.
