About this property
An Onekama gem. Short walk to a quiet beach.
Note: This cottage is nestled away from densely populated areas and really is a great destination to stay safe and continue to social distance.
-4 bed/2 bath with fully enclosed outdoor shower (great for sandy kids!)
-Sleeps 8 in beds (plus two futons, an air mattress and a large couch)
-Large screened in front porch and large back deck
-Firepit
-Wifi/washer/dryer
-A couple blocks from one of the best public Lake Michigan beaches in the area (Lakeisle and Portage Point Rd. leads to the Sunset House which is a wonderful hidden gem, yet public access beach.)
-A perfect summer cottage for your family. ------ Other beaches:
• The next closest Lake Michigan beach is at the channel and lighthouse at the very end of Portage Point Road, about ½ mile away. • For a more secluded spot, we sometimes enjoy the beach at Pierport. Take M-22 about four miles north of town, past Miller’s Northwood Market, to 13 Mile Road. Turn left and go to the end. There is an artesian well there with some amazing fresh drinking water – “Old Faceful”! • You can access the south pier and beach from the south side of Portage Lake. Take M-22 south to Crescent Beach Road, and then about a mile or two down the road when it starts to climb to the left and becomes Lakeshore Road, stay to the right to stay on Crescent Beach Road, and take it to the end.
The town:
Onekama boasts three marinas, offering boat and jet ski rentals as well as fishing charters. The village also offers several gift shops, restaurants (M-22 Grill for breakfast/lunch; The Glenwood has a reputation throughout the area for dine dining (make a reservation well ahead; it fills up), an excellent brand new gas/food mart, laundromat, library, post office, village park, a wine shop, and a local winery just a few miles from town going toward Manistee. For some local fare, be sure to pick up some warm apple and cherry turnovers for breakfast from the food mart. They’re delicious! But you’ll need to get there pretty early before they run out. The Onekama farmer’s market is held across from the hardware store on Fridays from 2-6 p.m., with locally-grown fruits and vegetables. Also, every Monday evening (June-August) there is a “Concert in the Park”, with a variety of musical groups providing the entertainment. There’s a playground for the kids, and you can stay for as long as you want. Bring some lawn chairs or a blanket. An evening bonfire on the beach at Lake Michigan underneath the stars is always a treat. The historic Victorian port city of Manistee is ten minutes to the south, with numerous gift shops, restaurants, a volunteer-run movie theater, gorgeous beaches, and a great river walk that stretches from US-31 almost to Lake Michigan. It’s also a port for large ore-boats that frequent the Manistee harbor on occasion. The popular resort village of Frankfort with dozens of unique shops and great restaurants (we like Dinghy’s, and the Crescent Bakery & Café - amazing warm pretzels, but get there by 11 a.m.!) is a short twenty-minute drive to the north on the scenic M-22 highway. The Point Betsie lighthouse (historic and pretty cool!) is just north of Frankfort a few miles, on up M-22. It’s a great place to collect rocks. One of the most outstanding lookout points along the entire western coast of Michigan is the Arcadia Lookout, located twelve miles north up M-22, a mile past Arcadia, with a panoramic view of Lake Michigan that will take your breath away. Pick an evening when there will be a beautiful sunset, combine it with a visit to Arcadia’s great little ice cream shop (big ice cream cones for a reasonable price), and you’ve got a nice evening outing. If you enjoy golf, you can pick from five beautiful courses within a twenty minute drive, including the spectacular Arcadia Bluffs, a world class 18-hole links golf course situated on the high bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan; it’s also a great place to have dinner, with a bagpiper playing on the dune at sunset. There is also mini-golf in Manistee and Beulah. For some fun day trips, some of the favorites would be: • Heading north about 45-minutes to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, named the “Most Beautiful Place in America” on ABC’s Good Morning America; then have lunch in Glen Arbor at the Cherry Republic Grand Cafe. • Taking a picnic lunch and going canoeing or tubing down the peaceful Platte River • Driving up scenic M-22 to its end at the tip of the Leelenau Peninsula, and visiting the quaint villages along the way • Spending a day shopping and sightseeing in Traverse City, Charlevoix, Harbor Springs, or Petoskey • Really make a day of it (or an overnight) and head to spectacular Mackinaw Island, with its historic forts, Grand Hotel, carriage rides, bike rides, and of course its famous fudge.

We had a lovely stay at this cozy cottage! The screened-in porch was fantastic, and all the bedrooms were a great fit for us! Looking forward to our next visit!
We had a wonderful stay- Beds for everyone, excellent sleeping porch, comfortable space for
everyone, well equipped beach shed, short walk to beautiful Lake Michigan!
So close to Lake Michigan! Fantastic lake michigan beach 5 minute walk awat! Cute cottage with plenty of room, fantastic 3-season porch, plenty of places for family hangouts! Beach amenities provided, which saved us a huge hassle of bringing chairs, umbrellas etc. Even provided bikes! We thoroughly enjoyed our time there!
This is a GREAT rental, reasonably priced. We have stayed here the last two years and are planning our third next summer. The owner is quick to respond to any questions. The location is perfect for us as we have extended family at Little Eden Camp just down the road.
This house was perfect for our needs. very quick walk to beach. House was very clean, beds very comfortable. Response time from owner very quick and was so helpful. we will go back to this. highly recommend.
This roomy authentic cottage satisfied perfectly the needs of the 6 members (4 adults and 2 small children ) 3 generational family. We were able to comfortably park 2 vehicles in the driveway , plenty of written instructions guided us thru the do's and don't ( hardly any don'ts ) plus excellent suggestions as to things to do and places close by to go to. Definately a destination for us on a future family holiday.
Our second time renting from Judd! Our family ranges from ages 6-79 and this house accommodates all! Lots of areas to spread out or gather, A/C for the win on this hot week! Great location for beach, walks, drive in to town. Lovely neighbors and community. Judd is a very responsive host! A

Thank you, Megan! So glad you had such a great week. We’d love to have you back!
Our 2 week stay at the cottage was fantastic! Jud was so great to work with and kept me informed on the details. The cottage was very comfortable and clean. We especially loved the screened in porch. While we were there, it got a bit hot, so the air conditioning throughout the house was great. I would highly recommend the cottage! Thank you!
My family and I enjoyed our trip to Onekama during the second week of July 2021. We had three adults and three kids stay at the cottage. The cottage is truly a short walk to the beach, which is sandy and not rocky. It is absolutely beautiful! There are four bedrooms, three upstairs and one downstairs. Each room has a double/queen size bed. The house fit our family well and we had such a great time visiting the sights of Onekama. We visited the lighthouse piers, went on long walks, swam at the beautiful beach, and visited the Sleeping Bear Dunes. Thank you so much for the opportunity to stay at your cottage!
Outstanding location! Just a few minutes walk to beautiful Sunset Beach on Lake Michigan and the Portage Point Community Dock on Portage Lake. An easy drive or slightly longer stroll to Portage Point Inn. The cottage has many amenities that made our stay more pleasant ... dishwasher, washer & dryer, large screened in porch, extra apartment-sized refrigerator on the porch, large outdoor deck with table and chairs, two bathrooms, four bedrooms, etc. The reason for our overall 4-star rating was due to cleanliness issues (a 3 rating in this category). There were some areas in the cottage that weren't very clean. We do plan to stay again because the size and location worked so well for us and the price is reasonable, just hoping for a deeper clean next time. The host was terrific. We had a couple things pop up while we were there for two weeks and Jud was very responsive and accommodating. Communication was excellent. All in all, a good place to stay near the beach in wonderful Onekama, Michigan!
We chose this property due to it’s proximity to Frankfort for the IronMan race. We are so happy to have discovered this place! Our favorites about the property were the amazing screened in porch and the gorgeous, unpopulated beach at the end of the road. We so enjoyed our time in “1,”!
Clean, comfortable and convenient to both Lake Michigan and Portage Lake
Owner is very responsive with questions and information.
The kitchen has everything you need to cook dinner, large dining room for family meals, family room has TV with Netflix, large screened in porch for relaxing.
Walking distance to a very nice beach. Overall excellent!!
We have vacationed in Onekama since 2004 and this cottage and location of the cottage has been one of the best by far! Beds were comfortable, water pressure great, had laundry facilities and everything that you could want! The porch was my favorite part! The addition of AC on the off chance you would need it was a nice option and even though we were on vacation having the WiFi was a real plus! I know we will be back! You just can’t beat the weather and beaches in this area, I guess that is why we have continued to come back year after year!
The house has an excellent location - just a short walk to the beach - and had everything we needed for a great stay - comfortable beds, a/c, screened in porch, kitchen with plenty of pots and pans. The owner Jud was very responsive to the questions we had before we arrived. Highly recommended!!
This was the second time our family spent at this wonderful cottage! It is a very beautiful and relaxing cottage. The owners are fantastic, as well! We had a wonderful, relaxing week. Thank you so much Jud and family!

Cozy home, Beautiful beach and sunsets right down the road
The beach is right up the road and so gorgeous, the home is cozy and comfortable, the screened in porch was so nice for reading on a rainy day. Lots of beautiful day trips. Owner is extremely kind and contacted us right away when we had a minor problem. Lovely vacation!
We enjoyed a nice long weekend with my parents and brother. This property is nicely situated between Lake MI and Portage Lake which are both a short walk. Jud was responsive to our inquiries and everything was as expected. We had a really nice quiet time here end of October.
We booked this trip with the intention of enjoying the beautiful nature this part of Michigan offers. The location was very peaceful and delivered on just that. The property is part of a quaint neighborhood and the public access beach to Lake Michigan is right down the street. To say the view is beautiful is a complete understatement. The house is well kept and comfortable, offering plenty of space. It is driving distance from Sleeping Bear dunes and an amazing area to be in the fall when the leaves are changing colors.
This property was amazing even in the off season. The place was very cozy and had everything you need to unwind and relax with family or friends. located in a great center between two lakes. We plan on coming back.

About the host
Hosted by Jud Brooks
The Brooks have been in Onekama for over 100 years. The original family property was out at the lighthouse. Over 5 generations have now scattered throughout town. My wife and I live in St. Louis, Missouri with our three kids. We have rental properties in STL and finally decided to pull the trigger for a place "up north." Honestly, we are most excited to share it with you than to use it ourselves! We love helping others create memories and know that will happen at Lakeisle. Give us a shot.
Why they chose this property
It's a couple blocks away from an incredible, quiet Lake Michigan public beach!
