About this property

Peaceful Mountain Cabin on the Poudre River

Private, cozy, summer cabin with large wrap-around screened porch

On the river...

This rustic, summer mountain paradise is cozy, very private and loaded with charm. Nestled in the shadows of Profile Rock, it’s within healing distance of the rushing Poudre – a wild waterway that starts as a trickle in the snow melt above timberline and tumbles down the canyon with drama and beauty.

The river is only a stone’s throw away down the hill and there are more than 100 yards of private riverfront to explore. The trout are challenging but can be coaxed onto your line, or you can sit on a large rock at river’s edge and reach deep inside to unravel issues that need to flow downstream.

Remnants of the cabin’s humble past are visible everywhere. A favorite is the massive relic of a stove in the kitchen—part wood-burning (to warm away chills), and part electric (to cook up a delicious breakfast on the other side). An old-fashioned electric percolator brews a fine cup of coffee after you light the match to start the stove fire; then you can sit back and watch for the flutter of hummingbirds dropping by for an early-morning sip.

A screened wrap-around porch comes with two iron beds so you can breathe in the scent of pine and let the sound of the river rush you to sleep. During the day you can chat on the porch swing or recline with a book on the love seat. Evenings you can linger long after dinner around a candle-lit porch table for eight, sipping wine and trying to remember what you were so stressed about before you came.

Halfway down to the river is a playhouse your children will love (adults have also been known to escape there for a midday snooze). Complete with toys and a deck furnished with child-sized table, it's perfect for tea parties and hours of play. Another thing the children will love is the elevated train track in the main cabin that circumnavigates the kitchen and detours into the living room.

Everyone loves the nearby hikes – up the road to Roaring Creek and South Fork trails or further up to Lake Agnes, American Lakes, the Crags and Cameron Pass. Moose are often spotted on these high-altitude climbs and you can see Rocky Mountain National Park from the highest point above American Lakes.

This isn’t Aspen living. It’s more like camping without the cold hard ground. The 1-1/2 bathrooms are pretty basic, but they do the job. One has a shower stall. Not a granite counter type of place, to be sure, but wonderful just the same.

There’s a saying that goes “The outside of a horse is the best thing for the inside of a man”. This cabin really does do something for the inside of a person. Each time anyone visits, they can’t wait to come back. Just ask any of the family members and friends who have enjoyed it for more than 50 years.

Pets are welcome.

River Sound-Soother

This was our second stay at the cabin, and we weren't disappointed! It feels like home now, and everyone wants to sleep on the sleeping porch due to the fresh air and sound of the river! We fish every day, and the place is set up for dealing with our fishing gear and the fish that we keep and cook! John knows how to prepare for every need of his guests. We hope to be back for more photos of the river and Profile Rock!

Perfect cabin on the river

This property was amazing! I would recommend to anyone. My children loved the playhouse and train. We fell in love with sleeping on the screened in porch each night with the sound of the river to lull us to sleep. Poudre canyon is beautiful! We are already talking about returning next summer!

simply AMAZING!!

This cabin is a cozy, warm, and inviting place to call home for a few days! Listening to the rushing river, sleeping on the screened in porch, grilling outside, laying in our hammocks alongside the river, playing Scrabble, sitting in front of the fire...need I say more. The cabin was clean and had every supply we could ask for. I would highly recommend and am thankful for the great memories made there. Thank you for opening up your cabin for us to enjoy.

Vicki M., Where do you live?

Great place in a beautiful location!

Property is exactly as pictured and obviously well loved. Many thoughtful and creative touches throughout the house. Adults traveling together need to be aware that “2 bedrooms” includes the living room with a sofa bed and then an upstairs bedroom with two double beds side by side. The living room could actually be made into a private room through the use of the French doors and an ingenious divider that drops from the ceiling and incorporates the half bath. We did not use the sofa bed, so cannot attest to comfort. Our friend slept in the upstairs room by the stairs and said it was a comfortable, firm bed and she was cozy, especially with the mattress heater. My husband and I slept on the porch, also with the heaters, as it got down to 39 on our last night! We found those beds to be too soft for the two of us together, so slept separately and were comfy. A new mattress on at least the east bed might be in order. The screened porch is the most wonderful place on the property, unless you count the adirondacks by the river!!!, and we spent a lot of time in both places when we weren’t hiking. Someone else has already mentioned the hikes. Wonderful! Get a North park map and use it! Kitchen is well stocked with many essentials for cooking, as well as paper and cleaning products and cookware. A nice addition would be an automatic drip coffee pot, but there is even a salad spinner! We brought our own because I hate wet salads and had to laugh when we saw one in the pantry!!! DO take the owners’ advice about shopping for groceries and alcohol in FC before coming up the canyon! We enjoyed watching a movie a couple nights, playing cards on the porch, and then dropping into beds bone tired from hiking. The WiFi worked great, so if you don’t want the big and little kids to be on their devices, pretend there isn’t any!!! 😜. If you like to read in bed, bring book lights, as the lighting is not conducive for that. John was very responsive, both before the trip and during the week, and returned the deposit within a few days. We had a great time, enjoyed the cabin and the canyon and would come back. Thanks for sharing this cool old family treasure with the public! I don’t think I could do it!

Not to be missed

We enjoyed our stay immensely! This cabin had everything we needed for our stay in the Poudre Canyon, and more. The owners planned thoughtfully to make our stay relaxing and carefree. Everything was labeled and a notebook answered any questions we had. I did contact the owner once with questions about Fort Collins and he answered very promptly with great suggestions. This cabin is within 20 minutes of AT LEAST 12 hikes of varied degrees of difficulty. There is plenty to do at the cabin. Board games, books, an adorable children's playhouse with bunk beds and a train that chugs around the ceiling and passes through 2 rooms. The screened porch is so relaxing with a large table that seats 8, a swing and so much more! The river welcomed us every morning and was the last place we visited every evening. We had so much fun with the hummingbirds, too. We needed a chance to relax and unplug, and this cabin provided that chance...even though we were able to use devices when needed. Both of us were very sad to leave and the last evening we spent sitting and planning our next visit back.

Could not have been better-

It is very unusual, despite the glorified descriptions that abound, to find a vacation home that is actually a home, with the accumulated flavor and character of years that comes from the love and attention of a family. This place has that, and more. We have never stayed anywhere (and we've done a good amount of this) that was as inviting and as well-equipped and welcoming as this lovely old house. From the sleeping porches to the well-outfitted kitchen, the site above the river (where there are plenty of fish, if you work at it), and the obvious care taken by the owners, this is not to be missed. If you want upscale and hot-tubs and lots of silliness, this isn't the place for you, but if you want a real home in which you can cook, relax with family/friends, and make regular forays up and down the river, this is it. Thank you!

Very enjoyable stay!

Beautiful cabin in a very unique setting. Plenty of linens, soaps, paper products, spices essentials provided. The owners go above and beyond in anticipating the needs of their guests. Very thoughtful and considerate. Sleeping outside on the porch with the stars and river as background music was a highlight of our trip. The hummingbirds were an amazing delight as well. I can’t imagine anyone being disappointed with a stay at this lovely retreat. A special thank you to John and Linda for sharing their home with us.

Beautiful

This is such a beautiful old rustic peaceful cabin. We visited this place with two of our grandchildren. Enjoyed the setting by the river, the kids enjoyed the playhouse. Such a perfect place to call home base while we explored the Poudre Canyon. We hope to stay there again on our next visit out west. Thanks so much for sharing your cabin with us.

Loved every minute of our stay!

This cabin is ideal for our family vacation. From the layout and amenities of the cabin to the playhouse and easy access to the river, there was something for every member of our family to enjoy. We didn't leave the property for the whole week that we were there. Definitely look forward to renting this property again next year.

The Best of the Poudre

We stayed for a week in John and Linda's cabin and had the best of times with family and friends! The cabin is beautiful and right on the river. We fished each day on nearby lakes and then returned in the cabin to fish on the Poudre, right in our own backyard. The fishing was great, and we were grateful to spend less time on the road hunting down available locations on the river. We had eight people staying at the cabin, and all of us found accommodations that were comfortable and relaxing. My own favorite was one of the two beds on the screened in porch. It truly is like comfortably sleeping outside without the insects or the hard ground. In fact, the beds have heated mattresses that keep you toasty as the sound of the river lulls you to sleep! The kitchen is well stocked with everything anyone could need. The bathroom has separate organizer boxes for each guest! The home is really much more than a cabin. It is huge with places to gather on the screened in porch and in the beautiful living area. We sang, danced, and had great discussions throughout our week! An added bonus is internet access--a rare find in this region of the mountains. Our family has been visiting the Poudre River region every year since my husband was a child! We always enjoy our time here; but this location, cabin, and host suit us better than any other place we have stayed! We hope to do it again soon!

What a surprise!

This is the best combination of rustic and modern! When we were on the screened in porch (which we were 90% of the time) we felt like we were back in cabins in our childhood. Inside was a cozy living room, reading room, and fully stocked kitchen and an upstairs bedroom. Yes, the bathrooms were small but totally 100% functional. The river and deer were our company while we stayed. There are many spots a short drive from the house where fishing is excellent. It is truly a place to relax and appreciate the love that multiple generations of this family put into this house. This is one of our favorite spots and hope to return again next time we are in Colorado. Thank you, John and Linda, for sharing this property.

Home away from home

We loved everything about the cabin. This was our first time using a VRBO and the experience was better than we had imagined. The home was very comfortable and well stocked. The children loved the train and the playhouse. We caught some fish out back and this worked as a great home base for Our outdoor fishing, hiking, and whitewater rafting adventures. Hope to return some day!

Wonderful experience at this cabin by the Poudre River! We had all the amenities that we needed. The place was clean and comfortable and quiet and private. The river was awesome and loved hearing it throughout the night. Saw many hummingbirds and other wildlife during the few days we were there. Within driving distance for several fun day trips for fishing and sightseeing. Owners were very helpful and accommodating. We would definitely stay at this cabin again!

Everything we hoped for!

The cabin was great. Close to hiking and fishing. It was very quiet and private for us even with neighbors close by. Very homey and well kept up, it was just like we never left home. The river was close by and was always a good place to fish and relax at. The hummingbirds were one of the highlights and they were a treat to see everyday. Locals were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely want to stay here again.

A far away remote escape

If you want to be far away from the hustle and bustle of people, this is the perfect place. Wahoo - No cell service!! The cabin was very roomy, cozy and comfortable. My two boys and I thoroughly enjoyed sleeping out on the screened in porch. Felt like we were sleeping outside as we fell asleep to the sounds of the powerful Poudre River and could see the moon and stars. The heating blanket was a cozy surprise and kept us amazingly comfortable and oh so warm! It was fun to see all the old-fashioned kitchen items my great grandmother and grandmother used to have in their kitchens. Good time to think back on some fond memories of my childhood. The kids LOVED the outdoor cabin and enjoyed using it as their very own restaurant as they served us many 'meals' throughout the week. The short walk to the river was perfect spot to hang up the hammocks, soak in some sun and watch the powerful river. We brought our whittling tools and enjoyed learning how to use them carving into some twigs laying around the property. Again, if you want to get away from it all and have no worries, this is a great place to go. Several hiking trails close by, very quiet, peaceful and rejuvenating. Bring some sugar with you to feed the hummingbirds. They are hungry, amazing creatures. One morning when I was hanging the feeder a hummingbird landed on it before I even let go of it. It was crazy fun to see that! We had 6 at one time feeding on one feeder. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to get far far away from it all to just relax and renew the mind.
