About this property

Quinta do Loureiro - Baião - Douro - Private - Heated Pool - Stunning Views

17th Century farmhouse set in 25 acres of gardens, with superb views over the Douro River, reached by a lovely winding track through the grounds. The property, with its orange, lemon and olive groves, has been in our family for several generations and the many prints, sketches and photographs lining the walls tell their own history of the Port Wine region of Portugal. The property is 70km from the coast and Porto (home of the Port Wine cellars and with its town center designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

The property is an hour drive from Porto City and close to Port Wine Estates. It is served by the Douro Train Line. There are lovely restaurants and well-stocked supermarkets close by. This is the perfect place for nature lovers, writers, historians, wine lovers and everybody that needs a break from hectic city life!

Getting Around in the Local Area
Quinta do Loureiro is situated in a stunning location in the Douro valley.
Because of its fairly remote location – although it is only about an hour’s drive to Porto – we have always advised guests to hire a car. Recently however, we have realized that some people might like the option to use taxis, or a combination of public transport and taxis. After all, the main railway line from Porto stops at a station just a five minute taxi ride away! So, we have put together a selection of possible taxi rides and excursions. .We can provide many other ideas for trips out by train or taxi in the local area . Please ask!
Examples of individual taxi trips prices:
To and from Porto airport: 120 Euros each way.
Local supermarket for shopping: 30 Euros each trip.
Visit to a local winery or regional restaurant (total cost of tour ) : 150 Euros
Other one-day leisure trips or tours: 150 Euros.
Taxi return trip to local train station at Mosteirô or transport to and from the Porto Antigo Hotel or a local restaurant: 30 Euros.

We can also make your transfer back to the airport more enjoyable, with, for example:
Lunch at Ribeira , downtown touristic area of Porto city , a river cruise and in case of a late check in flight a tasting tour at one of the Port wine cellars.

Of course we will always do our very best to accommodate guests’ requests, so if there is anywhere else you would like to take a taxi tour to, please just ask!

New for 2023 is our one day tour to the tourist attraction at Arouca for a total cost of 200 Euros. This includes:
Stunning scenic walkways – 8700 m long – we book your tickets and drive you there.
Visit 516 Arouca, the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world, 516 m long at the municipality of Arouca with breathtaking views over the river Paiva.
NB: Note that the walkways and 516 Arouca can be visited the same day.
We take care of everything and also included is a local visit to Arouca, a stop for shopping and return.

Our weekly taxi package.
We offer for up to eight guests, with no car hire, a package for week’s taxi hire to cover average needs for 550 Euros. One of the great benefits of this is that there is no need to worry about how to get to the house, negotiate unfamiliar roads , to enjoy the scenic views and have a relaxed meals .

For example:
Transfer from and to the airport
Three trips to a local supermarket
A one day winery tour.
Other trips can be arranged .

Individual trips would be at the prices stated above, similarly for guests staying for less than a week.
For eight people the car will be replaced by a nine-seater van with a surcharge of 10 % for each individual cost.

The check-in time can be flexible. When you arrive, Francisco the owner will be waiting for you to give you the keys and give you details that you need to know about the house , restaurants and places to visit as any request from guests .

Quinta do Loureiro is open all year round .
Local temperature by winter time is mild and the house provides all the comfort by a large fire place and units of air cond.
In case you interested to book the house by this time let us know for special rates .

Quinta do Loureiro - wow
A beautiful family-owned property, with stunning views and grounds on the banks of the river Douro. I stayed with 4 family members and we had a very special 10 days. You need a car to navigate the area, and we often stocked up on goods in Marco de Canaveses. On Francisco's recommendation we travelled to Quinta do Pacheca, which was stunning. Boat trips need to be booked in advance. We enjoyed the beautiful pool and found everything clean and tidy. I hope we can return one day soon.

Lovely stay in the Douro Valley
We were visiting the area for a wedding. Francesco was a wonderful host. The house dates from 1680 and is full of character. The views are amazing. Francesco took a lot of time to welcome us and had thought of every comfort, He gave us great advice about the local area. Thank you!

Beautiful views and property
This place had the best views I have ever experienced. From all bedrooms, lounge, patio, and swimming pool you have stunning views across the valley and of the river. The house is large, good size rooms. V large pool to relax by and enjoy the vista. We were here with my kids and mostly visited the local area in the mornings and lounged by/in the pool in the afternoons. The host was great with suggestions for trips. Kids loved going around picking lemons and figs. Overall this was a stay to remember and an astoundingly great property.

Amazing
Beautiful property with awesome Douro Valley views. The lack of a major road nearby means the property is challenging to get to, but is not troubled by traffic and hence the only noise comes from the river (!) and the regular trains trundling up and down the valley. We made use of these from nearby Mosteiro which has a full service. At night there is almost silence. Lovely pool and eating areas. Amazing cellar rooms that have museum type information on the Douro (and a table tennis table). Excellent supermarket in nearby Cinfaes. We loved everything about this place.

Relaxing stay with amazing views
We all enjoyed our stay at this beautiful old farmhouse - the views of the river Douro were fantastic to wake up to every day and the ample pool perfect to cool down in The owner is very helpful and friendly, Francisco can help arrange airport and local transport options and I highly recommend this option over driving yourself! This location is perfect for those looking to relax at the property, and whilst transport can be arranged there is not much in the way of restaurants that are in easy walking distance - stock up at the supermarket and enjoy al fresco meals! A very relaxing stay

A slice of heaven in the Douro Valley
Quinta do Loureiro in the Douro Valley in Portugal is a slice of heaven. The period home comfortably sleeps 7-8 and the views from every bedroom and the living room are beyond amazing. However as the picture shows we so enjoyed our family meals under the awning overlooking the Douro. Francisco’s above and beyond hospitality is simply the icing on what is a fabulous cake. We will be back.

Quinta do Loureiro - the perfect place to unwind and relax
This was our third stay at Quinta do Loureiro and once again we had the most fantastic holiday. Francisco is the perfect host, so friendly and helpful. The house is situated in an idyllic setting, it is so peaceful and a wonderful place to relax. The views are stunning, the pool is fantastic, especially this time with the new permanent shady pergola for some of the beach loungers. We just enjoyed waking up to the tranquillity of the surroundings, watching the boats going up and down the river as we ate our breakfast, and watching the sun go down from the dining table on the terrace. Everything is provided in terms of linen and kitchen equipment, you could not ask for more. We cannot wait to return.

Fabulous views, peace and relaxation - a very special place.
We loved many aspects of staying at Quinta Do Loureiro. The house has a charming mixture of antique furniture, paintings, sketches and port wine memorabilia, all of which we found interesting to look at and gave it a lovely atmosphere and sense of history. The kitchen was well equipped, the big fridge freezer was great and made self catering easy. The grounds with their citrus and olive trees were pleasant to wander through and we enjoyed the privacy of not being overlooked by other properties. We loved having so many different areas to sit and admire the views from. The pool and pool area were excellent, we appreciated the shade from the pergola but also the stunning views across the Douro Valley and it was a great place from which to admire the sunsets. We nicknamed the little area under the wisteria with two benches and table 'G&T terrace', and it was a great place for a morning cuppa whilst watching the sunrise or a late afternoon aperitif. Most of all, we just loved watching the view over the valley as it looked so different throughout the day depending on what the light was doing. Early morning mist burning off the water, golden late afternoon sun and twinkling lights at night all gave an endless supply of things to look at and admire which we found deeply relaxing. When we did tear ourselves away we made good use of the trains from Mosteiro (only a short drive away, the man in the ticket office was very helpful), visiting Porto for the day, a day in Tua and Pinhão for lunch, siteseeing and port tasting and then back to Pinhão for lunch and a river boat cruise. The train is well worth using as it follows the river bank and gives great views along the way. We used the hire car to visit Lamego, Amarente (particularly lovely to wander round) and Cinfaes. Francisco was very welcoming, helpful and discrete. We knew we could ask him for help if we needed it but appreciated being left to our own devices for complete privacy, peace and quiet. This is a very special place and one to which we hope to return. Muito obrigada, Francisco!

Wow! This is an amazing place. Everything is as described but even better!
We had the most wonderful holiday here - it just could not be better! The stunning scenery, the beautiful house and Francisco's generous hospitality made our time here one we will treasure. We enjoyed two weeks here with various friends and family joining us over this period to celebrate a 60th birthday and 32nd wedding anniversary. Most of our time was spent in and around the beautiful pool as the weather was so hot and the views are amazing! The house remained cool as we closed the shutters during the day. We ventured out on a few occasions to Amarante and Lamego, both worth a visit. Francisco was discreet but readily available with advice regarding where to shop and places to eat and happliy made reservations for us. One of our favourite places was the Hotel Antigo down by the river. Their Sunday buffet was excellent and extremely good value. On the occasion of my husband's 60th birthday Francisco put the pool lights on and we had a wonderful evening of entertainment under the stars; such a special time. We enjoyed sitting in the different areas around the house gazing at the views, walking in the grounds and the 'boys' enjoyed playing table tennis. The maids cleaned efficiently during our stay and the house was very clean. The kitchen was well equipped and the bathrooms were good with efficient showers. This is the ideal place to relax and unwind whilst soaking up the sun and the amazing views. Francisco is charming and friendly and ensured that our holiday was the best it could be. We thoroughly recommend this delightful home and its owner and hope to return again!

The Perfect Relaxing Location
This is a fabulous location, set high up in the hills. From different viewpoints around the property, and at different times of day and night the view changes. We loved lounging by the pool, listening to the bird song and also watching the sun go down, with all the lights twinkling along the valley. As others have said, the owner's perfect hospitality made us feel so much at home in his home. The farmhouse is full of character, and also so well equipped with all mod-cons, how lovely to go home with clean laundry for a change! We loved the fresh oranges and figs, breakfast will not be the same again. We visited some beautiful local towns, Amarante and Regua by car, taking a boat trip on the Douro at the latter, and then the train down to Pinhao, where the railway station has the most wonderful tiles. There we enjoyed a leisurely lunch at the waterside. Our favourite place to eat was in the small town of Baioa, where we were shown the steak before it was cooked to perfection, served with salad and washed down with some amazing local vino tinto. We have also got used to a small white port with tonic as an aperitif before dinner. We could certainly get used to this life! So, we would recommend this property wholeheartedly for complete relaxation, amazing views and hospitality. We sincerely hope that we can return again soon. Hilary and Keith

A delightful property, very well equipped, clean and comfortable. Fantastic views over the beautiful river Douro. Wonderful pool! A good location for visiting the surrounding area by train or car. A Perfect Holiday in the Douro Valley
Quinta Do Loureiro is situated above the Douro Valley providing breathtaking views over the river. It is approached through a wooded area of eucalyptus and cork oak trees with terraces of orange and lemon trees to the front, this all gives the villa a high degree of privacy and adds to the overall atmosphere of tranquility. The house itself is very welcoming and full of character, spotlessly clean with comfortable beds, there is a very well appointed kitchen, a full bathroom and seperate shower room. Outside there is a large swimming pool and patio area with loungers, there are tables and chairs on the terrace to the front of the villa where you can enjoy meals taking in the superb views. During our stay we had temperatures in the high 30'sC, however inside the villa the temperature was always pleasantly cool. The lack of air-conditioning was not a drawback. We found this a great centre to visit the local towns and vineyards and explore further up the valley, the roads are in very good condition but do wind and twist a lot so leave plenty of time to travel! Finally Francisco is a marvellous host, very welcomming, with a wealth of local knowledge and always willing to assist making your holiday memorable.

A Second Visit
We did return and our only disappointment was that we were only there for a week! As beautiful a location as before, the website pictures are really as it is but with the added tranquility and panoramic views. It was lovely to meet Francisco again with his newly found dog Bobby who was also a delight. Again Francisco looked after us wonderfully, taking us to several towns to sort out printing of Ryan Air boarding passes and kindly sending back our sons case that he (me!) forgot. We ate at the house most evenings but Francisco provided us with the location of a fabulous restaurant nearby. We had plenty of hand picked and juiced oranges thanks to my daughter and my son found a shed snakes skin which was his highlight! A thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable time. Would we go back again? Without a doubt, it is a gem. Thank you Francisco, for your kind hospitality and lovely house. With kind regards, Dominic, Wendy, Emily and Darren

Douro Delight!
A beautiful and charming old farmhouse set in acres of private grounds, ideal for a completely "away-from-it-all" escape. The house feels authentic and cosy, instantly homely and very clean. The living area is on the main upper floor with a large lounge-dining room, main bathroom, kitchen, bathroom/toilet and the bedrooms. These four bedrooms are all in a line off one side of the central hall/corridor with their own little veranda and stunning views. There is a larger double, a standard one, a small double (cosy for 2) and a single. Below are two big old stone-walled rooms, windowless, with table tennis and pool inflatables in one and loads of books, historical and local info etc in the second - as well as the essential second (drinks) fridge and the free local wine...! The pool area is at least as wonderful as it looks in the pictures - you can lounge under the olive tree with endless river views in total privacy - and the little seat under the tree at the other end of the house is a top spot for lording it over the valley, unseen... Beyond these areas the huge grounds are great to wander quietly, whether to pick oranges or lemons on the terraces below the house, stalk the many and varied butterflies in the woods and open grassy areas or just enjoy all your private space and views. In terms of local attractions we didn't do much (bliss) but the Quinta is within 1 hr of Porto and various small towns, and the cave art sites are a 6 hr return trip. Lastly but by no means least, Francisco is your warm and friendly host who makes it just that little bit better again. Welcoming from the start, proud of his old family home and helpful when booking the local restaurant and quietly emptying the outside recycling bins, yet never intrusive. He lives in a small property adjacent to the grounds and is available for any query/information/assistance - particularly useful if you speak as little Portugese as we did... In terms of down-sides there is very little to complain about indeed. There is no air-con, but if you are sensible with shutters in the daytime and open windows at night it never gets too hot, and feels more authentic in any case. Also the Quinta is relatively remote (though you can hear a few sounds from the local town): no quick walk to the shops or bar/restaurant, more a 10 minute drive on the windy local roads - but this is part of the charm in many ways. Overall I can't recommend Quinta Do Loureiro enough and we have firm plans to return...

A Perfect Stay
Thank you Francisco for looking after us so wonderfully - especially your help with the car. A finer host is surely not to be found. A wonderful house and grounds with stunning views over the river it really felt very special. Being able to pick fresh oranges and lemons was a bonus! The pool was perfect. Absolutely Fabulous!
Quinta do Loureiro is truly spectacular! The home, the property, the views! We originally booked for 3 nights but stayed one more (so happy it was available) and I still couldn't bear to leave. Francisco and Teresa are such gracious and welcoming hosts, a beautiful couple, warm and friendly, going above and beyond to make us feel welcome, ensuring that we were well taken care of and that our stay was perfect. My husband and I loved every second and will cherish the memories for a lifetime. Even getting lost (we always do) was an adventure and it was truly difficult to keep my eyes on the road as every turn was a feast for the eyes. We began each morning with the most delicious fresh squeezed orange juice, supplied by Francisco and Teresa form the many orange trees on their property, sipping our way into the day, as we embraced the views and beauty around us. In the evenings, after the peaceful sunsets, we enjoyed dinner by the fireplace and watching the lights come on around the stunning valley. We forced ourselves out a couple of the days to visit wineries and stayed in one to enjoy the gorgeous pool, homemade lemonade, grilling lunch and a great walk around the property. Quinta do Loureiro is breath taking. Francsico and Teresa are the epitome of hosts. We will always carry the memories in our hearts. Thank you Francisco and Teresa.

Paradise on earth !
If there were a gold medal for Vrbo hosts Francisco and Teresa would be overwhelming favorites. They set a standard we have never experienced in a lifetime of travel. Not only did they help us plan our itinerary they went so far as to meet us at the train station several times to make sure we were heading in the right direction. Their graciousness and hospitality will remain with us forever. And then the property itself. The restoration of a family property since 1680 was stunning. Magnificent views from every window, air so fresh you could sense it, and orchards that supplied us the best orange juice we've ever tasted. The list could go on and on. Of course there was the awe inspiring beauty of the Douro valley. Twisting mountain roads provided photo opportunities at every turn. Day excursions to Porto and Pinhao were also great but the real treat was returning to Quinto do Loureiro each day. If Portugal is on your travel plans hopefully you can refuel at Quinto do Loureiro. It is paradise on earth. Thank you Francisco and Teresa.
