About this property
Lovely Townhouse with garden overlooking the Square sleeps 2-5+ comfortably
25 Market Square is located in the heart of Melrose overlooking the historic town only minutes away from a wealth of restaurants, cafes and bar food with no driving home! There are many local tourist attractions on your doorstep - Melrose Abbey, Harmony House that hosts the Borders Book Festival, the Greenyards (that hold the annual Rugby Sevens) and Abbotsford House, the former home of Sir Walter Scott, only 2 miles away with its award winning visitor centre. It is worth viewing the Trimontium exhibition opposite your front door. The Great Scottish Tapestry now has its permanent home in Galashiels and is also well worth a visit. . Behind the house, there is a a pretty garden leading down to a small wood. On the patio there is a table with seating for 6. Behind the house there is a free (approx. 20 spaces) car park that is only a few minutes walk back to your front door. 25 Market Square provides a wonderful central position from which to enjoy walking, golfing, fishing, riding, exploring local history or simply watching the world go by in this loveliest of Border towns. When you look out of the four, large picture windows of the reception rooms on the first floor, you can relax watching the comings and goings in the Square below. There, the historic Market Cross stands proud and a wonderful array of individual shops that include a green grocer, a vegetable shop, and a butchers, as well as a couple of small supermarkets make it all so convenient. You will have a grandstand view of the town’s many events, from festivals to pipe band competitions or you might simply choose to relax in comfort in the stylish sitting room or even take refreshments down to the garden.
This delightful property has a spacious kitchen/diner with a gas box fire for colder months as well as a separate sitting room with 2 sofas, a desk and a 2nd gas box fire. The house is also kept warm with gas central heating throughout. Note that both reception rooms can be bathed in sun well into the evening. The small bedroom on this first floor has its own ensuite. The two main double bedrooms are on the floor above and have the house bathroom between them. You can wake up in these bright, east facing rooms where the morning sunshine can be flooding in. From the windows there are lovely views of your garden, Nut-wood, Melrose Abbey (floodlit at night) Priorswood Gardens and one of the Eildon hills, transporting you from the hustle and bustle of life in the Market Square. In addition to the house bathroom and an ensuite shower room in bedroom 3, there is a third toilet on the ground floor in the inner hallway and a laundry area (that leads through to the garden) with a washing machine, tumble drier and butler sink - is a useful place to leave muddy boots and golf clubs etc. One of our favourite morning walks is past the abbey, down to the river Tweed and across the Chain Bridge, where paths lead right or left along the river banks. If you continue straight on you will arrive in the village of Gattonside. Return back across the bridge and right then up to the Weir Hill and past the famous Melrose rugby ground where the Eildon hills form a magnificent backcloth. Children will enjoy stopping at the Gibson park to play on the swings before wandering back through the town and returning home at the top of the High Street.
Different paths lead to the foot of the Eildons and the view of the Border countryside from the top is well worth the climb.
An hour’s journey by train leaving frequently from Tweedbank (3 miles away) transports you to the heart of Edinburgh where you can enjoy a full day visiting the sights without the hassle of having to park in the city.
There are also a variety of outdoor pursuits in the area that include fishing on the River Tweed, fieldsports, horse riding, golf, lawn bowling, mountain biking, and a selection of walks including the Southern Upland Way, St. Cuthbert’s Way and The Borders Abbeys Way. Several festivals which include the Melrose 7’s Rugby Tournament, the Borders Book Festival and the Melrose Festival, complete with its ride-out attract visitors, from far and wide. Thank you to our many guests who have left lovely reviews on-line and helpful ideas in our visitors book with suggestions of favourite places to visit and eat out. Hopefully you, too, will enjoy a wonderful visit to the beautiful Scottish Borders, Melrose and our Townhouse overlooking the Market Square.

Why they chose this property
25 Market Square has been in the family since 1860 and the shop below was our drapery business until the 1980's when it was sold leaving the original house and garden to the next generation.
Our Townhouse in Melrose was too difficult a home to give up, and as we had family still living in the town, we decided to refurbish the house, set up our holiday lettings, allowing us the chance to visit as often as time allows and give guests a taste of what the Scottish Borders and especially Melrose have to offer, helping the local businesses thrive with our new and returning guests enjoying the local shops, restaurants, pubs and cafes.
