The Captain's Cottage is nestled near the shore of the tidal Bagaduce River.
Take a quick jaunt(approx 5 min walk), a wooded path into a meadow that overlooks the Bagaduce South Bay. Enjoy the warmth of the rocks as you lounge by the water and listen to the wind as Mother Nature intended. Listen to the seals play and watch them as they bask in the sun at low tide (did you know the seals snort?) Explore the tide pools, where muscles, lobster, starfish, and crabs like to lounge. Rock in the hammock, let the day pass by with a good book and feel the ocean breeze. Fire orange sunsets, with campfires, lobster bakes, and toasted marshmallows to follow, are the perfect way to end a summer day at this adventurous cottage. Down by the shore is the ideal spot to launch a kayak- paddle out and explore the islands and the shoreline of the Bagaduce River. Take a trip upstream to the reversing falls and eat at the Bagaduce Lunch. Paddle to the historic waterfront of Castine. Our cabin was built in 2013 for comfort and family relaxation. We have named it “The Captain's Cottage” in honor of our son, who attended the Maine Maritime Academy. The cottage has a quaint New England feel. Escape the noise and bustle of the city and feel time slow down on the shore. Enjoy every second of the beautiful landscape and the comfort of this home.
Historic Castine is only 5.7 miles away! Blue Hill is 11.6 miles away, or you can visit Acadia National Park, which is under one hour away.

We couldn’t have been happier with our stay! Such a cute little cabin! The walk to the water was beautiful and getting to see seals hanging around topped our stay!
Close enough to tourism, but far enough at the same time. The property here is secluded and beautiful. Seeing the seals at low tide was worth it. Only thing that could make the place better is if it had laundry and a water spigot outside to rinse off.
Quiet secluded spot and an adorable cabin! Everything was provided - linens, paper towels, TP, lots of spices, hand and dish soap, drip coffee pot, cozy beds, lots of fans, a hammock by the shore, and firewood for the fire pit! It was great to sit by the fire at night, watch the lightning bugs, and listen to the frogs and trees. The shore was beautiful. Would definitely stay here again!
Simple, comfortable cabin with nice walk down wide mowed fern and tree lined path to amazing view overlooking rocky beach. Great location and wildlife viewing.
Just what we needed, nothing fancy but comfy and cheerful.. nice walk down to waterfront where the puffins and seals hang out on a sandbar.. pretty cool.

Great to hear you had a nice stay. Hope you visit us again!
The property this rental is located on is beautiful with a lovely walk through the woods down to the water. It did rain a lot while we were here, so we were not able to get outside as much as we would have preferred. I would say the house and property appear better in person than in the listing’s pictures. The check-in, communication process was great.

Thank you Lisa! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay.
We came to Maine to visit a friend & do some sightseeing. The pictures online are 100% accurate. It’s extremely secluded and it has an amazing view of the water and the rocks/island that seals would come out to sun on everyday. - It is s bit of a hike to the water, it took me about 6 minutes to walk it, but there’s a picnic table and a fire pit and an amazing g view when you get there. The host was very responsive and quick with communication.

Thank you Amy. I'm so glad you got the witness the seals at play! You are correct the walk to the water is worth the trip. My husband and I like to think of it as our one cup of coffee trip in the morning. Please visit The Captain's Cottage again.
The cottage is very easy and comfortable to live in, the deck is a lovely place to sit and have a meal. It is not very big, perfect for two of us and our small dog.
The property offers a large private space with a lovely walk down to the water. Deer, porcupine (twice), hummingbirds around the house and seals, cormorants and an eagle in the river, paradise. Easy drive to Castine for shopping. You cannot see water from the cottage, but we found that being surrounded by trees was very relaxing. The large lawn was great.
Another great summer in Maine.
I had to contact the owner the Day before we arrived. I received No instructions from her, When we arrived there was No Information on the area or the House . Nothing about garbage, what's nearby-, what one regularly receives- Nothing. The house was listed aa a "shirt jaunt " from the water It was nearly half a mile - each way. were fit but are in our seventies. The photos depicted a Picnic table near the water and a firepit on the rocks . Neither were there. The hose had NO Amenities. No drawers for clothes and One reading lamp? The ceiling fan didn't work and the freezer door kept freeing shut so we were unable to use the freezer. We left two days earlier. A disaster

Complicated rental. I had phone calls every day. Unfortunately, we had problems with the freezer and fan but had maintenance on-site to fix them. We also brought extra tables and lamps to satisfy his needs. I've never had this experience in all the years I've rented the property. Please read the ad before you rent a facility. Its not 1/2 a mile to the water, its a lovely walk and we were transparent about that it he read the ad properly. An unpleasant experience for all, buy a lovely place to be in Maine.

Summer retreat on the Maine coast
PROs: Great view of the seals sunbathing on the rocks exposed at low tide. The path to the water was a pleasant 5-10 minute walk through shaded woods. Well equipped kitchen with gas stove and new fridge. Comfortable futon. The property owner was very responsive.
CONs: No direct view of the water from the house. No A/C if you’re staying mid-summer, though there are several fans and numerous windows for ventilation. The screened doors had holes in the screens, so we left them shut to keep the summer bugs out. The internet connection is actually around 10 mbps based on multiple speed tests (as of my reservation the posting indicated 100+ mbps). This wouldn’t have been an issue if it were reliable. The connection cut out completely multiple times daily. Wouldn’t recommend for anyone intending to work remotely.
Overall we enjoyed our time at the house but I may have overpaid for our stay considering some of the missing amenities that I had expected. It appears that the price I paid is about $30 more than the currently listed price.

Sean,
Thank you for writing a review. I wanted to respond to give other guests some insight on the CONs you wrote about.
Internet: Speed can be a challenge in Hancock County as there are limited options. However, we rent to five college students throughout the school year and all have successfully completed their work and graduated from Maine Maritime Academy year after year without complaint. I also work remote when I am there and can do the work I need to.
Air Conditioning (AC) - I am very open in our ad that AC is not provided. I am happy with the cool air from the ocean and prefer the ocean breeze and the fans.
Screens- Thank you for sharing, we just installed the big slider and didn't have an opportunity to fix the small tear. I will take care of this.
It is the Host decision to list the price and adjust based on the time of year and demand. I am unsure what amenities you were missing. I would was very accommodating and went out of my way to provide you bedding and towels. I would also recommend that you inform Hosts about delayed check-outs. This gives Hosts a chance to inform their support team that there may be delays and not hold up the turn-over.
I do hope you can visit Maine again.
Kathleen
We found this cottage to be clean, cozy and quiet just as we hoped. The hostess reminded us to bring our own towels and bedding which was an important reminder as I didn’t notice that information on the listing. Unfortunately, we didn’t bring our own dish towels and dishrags so we wished that the cottage could include those. Overall, a lovely, relaxing place to stay.

Summer 2017 updates! The internet has been upgraded! We have lamps at the bedside. The seal pups are lounging on the rocks.
About the host

My husband and I live in southern Maine, and we love to share this amazing place that we bought while our son was at MMA.
Why they chose this property
It was all about the water! If you love the ocean you’ll know why we picked this beautiful spot by the water after you walk to the shore!
What makes this property unique
The Captain's Cottage is on 9 acres. There is also a main house on the same property which is vacant during the summer. There is a short walk to the water down a beautiful path. Its about a 5 min walk.
