Merlyn's Cabin has an open floor plan with queen sized bed upstairs and two twins downstairs. 2 Bathrooms--one up and one down both with showers. Fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher. All linens are furnished. An efficient heat pump provides comfortable climate control. There is a wonderful screened porch where you can enjoy a respite after hiking or rock climbing. I love starting the day on the porch with a cup of coffee and watching the many species of birds that are in the forest surrounding the cabin.

Had a wonderful time at the cabin. Remote location that was very quiet and enjoyable. Would recommend for anyone wanting a place to stay that is away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
We came to do some hiking in the Ozarks and simply get away for a bit, and catch up. This cabin is exactly what it appears to be and is super convenient to town and hiking trails. The fire pit was a nice respite in the evenings. Just loved everything about this property.
Spent four nights here while in town for a dirt bike race, and me and my family really enjoyed our stay. The cabin had everything we needed, AC worked well and the location was great. Jasper is just down the road for groceries or food, and there are so many hiking trails and amazing waterfalls within a 30 minute drive of the cabin, including Hammerschmidt Falls which is literally just a mile and half down the road.
I booked this property for my parents and they absolutely loved it. It was well appointed and secluded. Deer grazed in the yard in the mornings. The host was was super easy to contact and helped them navigate the directions. My parents had an incredible time.
Very private, secluded cabin - beautiful setting in the woods w/two little streams running along either side. It was cold when we were there - we appreciated all the extra blankets and the little electric fireplace...so peaceful sitting by that warmth and looking out the big picture windows! Thank you for a wonderful, relaxing break!!
loved the house and surrounding land. Would have liked a one page description of amenities at the cabin, how to use the TV (available free Chanels), how to contact owner, nearest grocery store, a good swimming hole etc.. It would have also been nice to have a bit of history on the property, like the origin story for that rock tub or pool outside. maybe having a few local maps, like a buffalo river map would also be good.
We had a great time, the two nights were very relaxed and we enjoyed your cabin.
We have stayed at many places and we totally would rank this one at the top. It’s so private and peaceful. It’s the first time we’ve not even wanted to go out and eat. We bought food to cook at the cabin. Absolutely loved it all. And it’s just minutes from Ponca. And we seen deer and all sorts of birds in the yard. Rank this place a 10 outta 10!!
Our party had a real difficult time finding the place , the directions were not clear . Upon finally getting into unit . They found spider webs and dirt on floor . It was so far off the beaten path , they decided not to stay there.
The pictures and description are all on point. The place was tucked away, beautiful and relaxing. It's a great jumping off point for the many outdoor activities or an excellent hideaway to spend some peaceful hours. Great screened in porch, fire pit, and room to roam.
I was nervous from some of the reviews about finding the location and making the drive down the driveway, but I assure you that the drive is exactly where the owner describes. You just need to look for the street sign with the number. I made it down the driveway just fine in my little Honda Fit with no worries.

Private, peaceful cabin stay
We had some trouble finding the cabin. Once we did, we were happy that we had our SUV rather than our sedan as the dirt road to the cabin is a little rough, rutted and crosses a tiny stream. Luckily it didn’t rain during our stay.
We loved all the space the cabin had to offer, as well as the full kitchen, and washer and dryer. The bed was especially comfortable.
The location was perfect and close to all the hiking and kayaking we wanted to do. At the end of each day, we sat out in the screened porch listening to the birds sing or reading a book. It was a special treat to see the nesting scarlet tanagers right outside our windows.
The cabin is rustic, but we did enjoy our 4 night stay.
This place feels like home when you walk in and need a break from the city the traffic the noise and dirty air. All the windows open to let that fresh mountain air in and let the stress out! Absolutely beautiful place. The WiFi works but leave it off. You need to decompress and unwind. The porch is fantastic. My fur babies loved it! I cannot wait to come back! The directions are easy to follow. I found that all the lights work. And everything in the house works well. Bring coffee wine and yourself and let the relaxation begin.

Very secluded
The place is very secluded down a long dirt county road. It was dark when we arrived which I would not suggest doing. The road is marked well from the street, but at night very difficult to see. The property around cabin is forest, we saw the biggest spiders we have ever seen ever. The kitchen was well equipped the little time we stayed there. We fish so we only slept there and made breakfast. The bed was super comfortable.
One really big issue we had was the black mold growing on the ceiling in the upstairs shower. Approx one foot circumference. It was surprising no one mentioned it to the owner before as it did not happen overnight. I did let her know that there was a significant amount of black mold and she was glad to know it. She did offer another cabin for us to stay in, but by that time it was day 3 and we had left the area. We wanted to get a refund for the one night, but no refunds. Yes she did offer another cabin which she did not have to do. I just wish someone would have mentioned it earlier to her. Black mold is bad for anyone, especially those with allergies. A refund would have been nice since we were unable to just leisurely stay there and relax on our vacation we planned so long for.
It was a lovely stay, with easy access to Horseshoe Canyon Ranch for rock climbing, as well as many other local outdoor adventures. I highly recommend!
The property proved a brilliant place to live in solitude for a while, away from people and noisr. Excellent location, well-maintained, with all necessary amenities.
What a treasure: A well-designed, cozy yet open open layout, all the essentials, charming original prints, forest seclusion, a feeling of history, a little stream, wildlife ranging from hawks to skinks… We look forward to a future return stay!
This cabin is in a great location right between Ponca and Jasper. The host's directions are very helpful. The cabin is comfortable and has big windows to enjoy the natural beauty outside. Plus there is a nice screened in front porch.
The bedroom is upstairs (nice, full-sized steps) with a bathroom and the washer and dryer. The shower upstairs is very small.
There is plenty of room downstairs with a comfortable sofa and another bathroom (with a larger shower). The kitchen has just about anything you need to fix meals. There are not enough spoons and forks for more than one day, but there is a dishwasher.
We enjoyed our 3 night stay and would definitely book this cabin again.
This is a great place. It’s perfectly situated between Ponca and Jasper and just uphill from Kyle’s Landing. Lots of wildlife! We watched and listened to barred owls from the screened-in porch. Far enough off the highway to feel secluded too.
Needed a place to shut down for awhile and we couldn't have found a better place! Close to The Lost Valley and Smith creek Preserve... yet the cabin is quiet and secluded. It was exactly what we were looking for.
This was the second time that I stayed here. I absolutely love this place! It is tucked away on a private driveway. Very peaceful and quiet. It is close to everything. I just wish I could could stay here longer! Thank you so much
Very nice secluded place to stay. The cabin was clean and cozy. The screened in porch was nice to sit in and drink coffee and watch the deer. Plenty of towels and extra linens and pillows. The bed was comfy as well. We will hopefully stay here again!

About the host
Hosted by Merlyn Lazorow
I am a retired art and design teacher. This property is part of my grandfather Spencer's Homestead. The land has been in the family for four generations.
Why they chose this property
I built this cabin as a retreat from my home in Kansas City. I treated it as an art project. The colors are vibrant and warm. The downstairs has windows across the living room and the upstairs was referred to a guest as "like being in a treehouse .' I like to leave the windows open at night and hear the sounds of the forest.
What makes this property unique
Merlyn's lcabin has a great location. It is very private, no close neighbors and only a quarter of a mile from the state highway 74. Perfectly located 5 miles from Jasper and only a short distance to the Buffalo River.
