About this property

Charming Character Cottage, Crychan Forest & Brecon Beacons

The Byre is a self-catering, two storey converted cow shed that sits independently of our cottage. With beams throughout, there are three bedrooms; Two singles, one large double, and bathroom with shower over bath. There is plenty of room in the double for an additional travel cot (which we provide). Downstairs, there is a kitchen/diner which is fully kitted out with electric fan oven and ceramic hob, microwave, fridge and large table that seats 4 – 6. There is a large hall and comfy sitting room with log burner. There are two TVs downstairs and metered Wi-Fi. There is use of a utility/boot room with washing machine and tumble-drier that easily has space for a couple of push bikes. The position of the boiler here makes it an ideal drying room after long winter walks! In addition to the courtyard at the front, there is a garden area for guests with table and chairs for 4 (BBQ on request) and access via the steps into the orchard and wider hillside fenced garden. The property lies on the side of a valley nestled between the Halfway and Crychen forests, with their plethora of bridle, foot and cycle tracks on the doorstep, providing fabulous opportunities to get out and about in the beautiful Welsh countryside (ask for local ordnance map). The Byre is surrounded by working farmland mainly used as grazing for sheep and cows and it is not uncommon to find the farmer herding his animals along the lane outside the property. The Byre would suit couples, families or friends interested in taking in the stunning Welsh countryside on foot, bicycle or horseback, with fabulous opportunities to see many bird species throughout the year, including, swallows, woodpeckers, finches, herons and raptors such as buzzards and the once rare Red Kite that glides on the thermals of the valley overhead. We welcome, and provide facilities for, up to 3 dogs, and guests will appreciate the walks right from the door. We are tucked away in the valley, 10 minutes off the A40 main, Llandovery to Brecon road, with the bustling market town of Llandovery 15 minutes away. Here you will find supermarkets, a range of small independent shops, pubs, restaurants and several take-away establishments. Llandovery has always been a rural hub, and still has a weekly livestock market and an annual Sheep Festival every September! Local attractions include the towns of Llandovery, Llandeilo, Carmarthen and Brecon; and tourist attractions of Dan-y-Ogof caves, Dinefwr Park, Dolaucothi Gold Mines, Llyn Brianne reservoir and Brecon Beacons. The Bike Park at Merthyr is proving a great attraction for guests. The busy cities of Swansea and Cardiff are just an hour and half away, with the Gower and West Wales coast again, only an hour and half driving distance.

Beautiful Welsh cottage
We absolutely loved this property, it’s so beautiful. It’s nested in the Welsh countryside with stunning views. We were greeted with a freshly made loaf of bread, orange juice, butter and eggs which was lovely! The interior furnishings were really well done too! There are only a few reasons for not making each point 5*’s, they are as follows; the WiFi didn’t work - we didn’t mention this to the owners as we were only staying 2 nights and didn’t find it worth bothering them for. But it may cause disruption to your holiday if you’re planning on doing some work which requires the use of internet (might be fixed but maybe expect it to be patchy!). The second point which isn’t a bad thing - we didn’t realise the whole building was just for us, we thought we’d only be using 1/2 of the building pictured, so that was a pleasant surprise. I can’t remember whether it mentions accessibility in the description but the garden, as beautiful as it is, isn’t accessible if you have mobility issues. It’s also incredibly slippy - I slipped on the slabs pretty much as soon as we arrived. There is a note in the welcome book about it but only read that after… might be good to get a sign. It sounds strange but we didn’t know how to leave the property when we left. We hung around a bit, thinking the owner would come out and send us on our way - asking if we’d enjoyed our stay etc. but they didn’t. Again didn’t think it was worth disrupting their Sunday at 10am so we just left.

The hiccup weekend!
Sat nav- wrong narrow road= car getting lodged in a stream, lovely guy Steve tows us out= going to need garage assistance. Get to beautiful cottage, witch on stairs and dark reading material not a favourite. Followed by the hire of cat hairy towels, (rectified and refunded) settled down to a cosy evening by the fire when an illegal rave shook the whole house (still going when we left at 9am!) (Not hosts fault, but not ours either) 7 hour drive ahead of us, not a thing offered in return by vrbo or the host (not even an extra few hours to get a bit of sleep before drive home, poor! Very poor! Don't think we will be using vrbo again in a hurry!

Tranquility in the Welsh countryside
Very cosy and comfortable cottage, lots of natural light with charming features. We loved seeing the birds outside the kitchen window and being able to use the wood burner in the sitting room. Eggs were provided from the hens nearby and our host kindly baked us some bread which was great. The only thing to be mindful of is that the location is quite remote so having a car is a must. Would have loved to experience staying there during sunny weather, though the home comforts helped to compensate. Very happy to come again!
