What a fun and quirky caboose! This was the perfect base camp for us and our motley crew, and Gina and Paul were just lovely. The lake was beautiful and location spot on for chasing waterfalls and Superior beach time with the pups. The caboose was super charming with everything we needed….we would love to stay again!
Great little property. Did end up getting colder than I expected but there was a heater for use. I spent most of my time hiking or in marquette which was an easy drive.

Actually, we were given the option to transfer to another VRBO for the same price. We did & it was an even better place. Thank you, Gina & Paul.
Neat area to stay lots of things to do ! We hit waterfalls and new to us mountain bike trails in big bay which are amazing !! I found the unique caboose very cozy and accommodating ! Thank you for a great weekend in big bay!
My husband, our dog and I spent 2 nights at this wonderful spot! The caboose had everything we needed and was very clean and comfortable. The hosts were great and very responsive.
Loved the setting! So unique! The hosts were very accommodating. Caboose had all the amenities, but the internet tended to be unpredictable at times. Great weather while we were there.
This little caboose had everything we needed and more! Came equipped with all bedding, dishes, pot & pans, utensils and etc. Paul & Gina were genuinely the host & hostess with the most! Also, enjoyed the sunset on Lake Independence, just beautiful!
Staying in the caboose on Lake Independence was a very unique and fun experience. The cabin is small, but cozy and comfortable, and you can’t beat the grounds and the view. Gina and Paul a delight - always available, never intrusive, ever generous. We would definitely come back.
We had an enjoyable stay. The caboose has everything necessary in it and outside. Gina and Paul are very nice and responsive hosts. Gina's gorgeous garden is the best place ever to have your morning coffee! The area is full of natural wonders, and you will rarely see other people on your hiking trail. We are definitely coming back!

Thank you. It was wonderful having you. Thanks for leaving the caboose so nice
We had a short stay (just two nights) so didn't have a lot of time to enjoy Independence Lake but it looked fun for kayaking and just floating around. Our hosts were so friendly and greeted us when we arrived, made sure we had everything we needed. We hiked around Sugarloaf Mountain, and visited the beach on Lake Superior which was awesome. Overall very cozy and beautiful location if water and woods are your thing. Close enough to Marquette to enjoy that area too. Eat at Crams cafe before heading home, it was delicious!
My girlfriend and I stayed here for a couple of days on a trip exploring northern Michigan.
The location is perfect and there's a really nice park right down the road which has a nice beach and beautiful pine forest, which we unfortunately only realized on the day we were leaving.
We were exploring a lot, driving around so we didn't spend too much time other than at night when we were exhausted from traveling around all day, but we loved everything about this place.
The property is really nice and in an amazing spot.
I think the only thing I would change is to replace the cabinet with the dishes with a love seat or something.
Definitely a unique place and we would definitely stay here again in the future.
Absolutely Magical Stay in the Converted Caboose! Our stay at the caboose in Big Bay, MI was nothing short of incredible. From the moment we arrived, we could feel how thoughtfully this space was designed. It was spotless, cozy, and had everything we needed—including a perfectly equipped kitchen that made it easy to cook together. Even the furniture was impressively well-chosen; the thickly padded folding chairs had a surprisingly La-Z-Boy-like comfort, making meals and laptop time genuinely relaxing.Waking up to the serene lake view and kayaking out to see the Huron Mountains reflecting on the water was a highlight we’ll never forget. The location is just secluded enough for peace and privacy but close enough to explore the area. We took advantage of the nearby waterfalls, great local hiking, and even played some pickleball at the nearby courts—you could also play tennis there if that’s your thing. The local ice cream shop and historic Thunder Bay Inn added a special small-town charm to our evenings. What made the experience extra special were the hosts. Paul and Gina were friendly, helpful, and full of great local tips. We really appreciated the waterfall guide and the chance to chat about their other unique rental properties.Between the natural beauty, the charming caboose, and the warmth of the hosts, this was easily one of our favorite getaways. Whether you’re looking to relax, paddle, hike, or just recharge, this is the perfect spot. We’ll definitely be
Everything went smooth as was as described. Our hosts were responsive and welcoming! We couldn't ask for more.

About the host

I was born in the Upper Peninsula, after graduating high school went to the lower Peninsula to continue my education, marry, have my children and live on a fast track for some years. Always I hoped to be back home where I started from. Hence here I am, lucky enough to have raised my children in pristine surroundings, with good air, lots of lakes to play in, trails to walk or climb. I'm a gardener with a passion so you will have lovely grounds to enjoy. When I'm not on me knees in the garden I enjoy cooking, making bird baths or hunting drift wood. Paul and I keep ourselves very busy with our rental interests. We have met some of the most enjoyable people. What a blessing.
Why they chose this property
This property was purchased because it was the perfect place to retire, plus there needed to be a home for our Caboose. We have our home on the property also so anything you would need would be taken care of right away.
What makes this property unique
What is more unique then a lovely Caboose. Look out the front door and there is beautiful Lake Independence, go for a stroll in the garden, or just sit there and listen to the water fall. Grill out on your own weber grill, that fish which you might have caught that morning. You can enjoy some of the most wonderful 4 wheeler trails, Hiking, the fall colors are just beautiful!
