About this property

Featured on TV: Beautiful historic palazzo apartment with private roof terraces

EscapetoItaly: The 1 bedroom split level apartment is perfectly located in a 17th century palazzo in the historical heart of beautiful baroque Galatina (otherwise known as the Little Lecce). It featured on Channel 4's A Place in the Sun with Amanda Lamb in 2007 (watch online now on You Tube) and has since been beautifully refurbished by award winning 'Puglia Estates' (also seen on TV). It sleeps 2 to 4 people, is self catering and is a perfect base for exploring the Salentine Peninsular. The property boasts original vaulted ceilings, 2 private roof terraces (spectacular views), a balcony over the cobbled streets, and within just 2 minutes walk are are shops, restaurants, cafes and gelato (ice-cream) shops open all year round! A beautiful non-touristy, thriving and friendly town, stunning local scenery and only a short drive to either the Adriatic or the Ionian Seas make this an ideal location to take it easy and enjoy the dolce vita. There are miles of beaches, acres of olive groves, and gallons of fantastic wine! The apartment has heating/air-con, Blue-ray/DVD/CD, projector, fridge, freezer, dishwasher & washing machine.

Additional Information:

Why not watch the show featuring the property, right now on You Tube!

As with many old properties in Italy, there are lots of steep stone stairs between floors (the ceilings are very high), some low doorways and very high roof terraces with waist high walls. As a result, the apartment may be unsuitable for people of reduced/impaired mobility or young children (under 10). It is the guests' responsibility to ensure the safety of their children. Having said this, the apartment is full of character and original features, and the high terraces afford spectacular views of Galatina and the surrounding area. Smokers are welcome, but we do request that guests only smoke outdoors on one of the two private roof terraces.

Welcome Packs: Our apartment manager (Cristiano) lives in Galatina and speaks perfect English. He'll meet you at the property with keys, and can also provide welcome food packs or special requests. Why worry about finding a supermarket on the first morning of your arrival, when you could just wake up and enjoy some real Italian coffee and the wonderful local produce on the roof terrace? How about adding that romantic touch by arriving to a chilled bottle of Prosecco, perfect for your first evening, watching the Italian sun set whilst sat on the top sun terrace. Please contact us for prices and availability.

Festivities, Concerts and Markets: During the summer months, Galatina and the surrounding towns host many open air concerts, festivals and fabulous markets. More information can be found on the owner's website (see link below) and on the internet. Try searching for 'feste a Galatina' on Google, and then clicking on 'Translate this page' if necessary. More likely than not however, you'll just wander into the old town square one night and hear wonderful live music or get swept up in a local festival with lights, parades, music and dancing!

Perfect hideaway in Galatina
Owners are helpful and informative and the house is in a perfect location in the middle of the old town. Parking not a problem with a permit that was easy to get. Galatina is a charming base to explore Puglia. Although the sun terrace is quite a bonus for the middle of the old town.

10 days stay in Galatina
A perfect place for a couple (see limitations of the flat) to explore Southern Apulia - Lecce, Otranto, Gallipoli, Leuca etc. There are some reasonable restaurants in walking distance, but also a well equipped kitchen.

Quirky house in the centro storico
We spent 3 nights here without a car. Trains are frequent Monday to Saturday to Lecce and Gallipoli and fun to use. For a longer period though a car would be needed. Cristiano very kindly met us as we were walking to the property. We were there in a heat wave and found that by keeping shutters closed in the day that there was no need to use air con. Rooftop terrace was too hot to use in the day but we got takeaways and ate up there in the evening. Good cafes and gelaterias nearby in the square. Would have liked an electric kettle. Also water pressure is low on Sunday mornings but this is mentioned in the guide to the property. Santa Caterina cathedral is definitely worth a visit. Both Jim and Cristiano are quick to respond to any queries and a lot of effort has been put into making it a comfortable place to stay.

Stunning Accomodation and Location
Fantastic apartment, just as Jim and Paul describe. Situated in the old town within five minutes walk to bars and several restaurants and a small supermarket. The apartment is fully furnished and very well equipped, for those who wish to cook at home, although you would then be missing out on the great food on offer in Galatina. A sleepy town by day that comes alive at night esp at the weekend. Jim and Paul's information pack covers everything from suggested bars, restaurants, parking, beaches and places of interest to visit in the area. We could not ask for more for us to revisit a different part of Puglia after 20 years. As you can tell we had a great time.

Lovely apartment right in the heart of Galatina
Lovely apartment with all the facilities you need and ideally placed with bars and restaurants on your doorstep. Jim and Paul were a dream to deal with and gave lots of information. Cristiano who manages the property was great and nothing was too much trouble. Galatina is a great base from which to explore the region. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property.

Wonderful!
We have recently returned from a wonderful week in Galatina. The apartment is fantastic, very well equipped, full of character with two outdoor terraces high on the roof. We loved it! A big thank you to Christiano (apartment manager) who had to come and find us on our arrival as many of the little streets were closed due to a music festival and we were getting hopelessly lost! Crowds of people later that evening joined in with singing and dancing to the music being performed on stage. A lovely way to start our holiday with a great party atmosphere in Galatina! The apartment is a perfect base to explore Puglia and it was lovely to be staying right in the heart of the old town with many restaurants and cafes within a couple of minutes walk. There is a very useful information pack from Jim and Paul in the apartment suggesting places of interest nearby. We visited most towns and also had a relaxing day on the beautiful sandy beach at Sant'Isidoro, a 30 minute drive from the apartment. We will definitely be recommending this apartment to family and friends and hopefully will return one day to this charming and friendly town.

Authentic Italy in a historic hideaway
Our stay in Galatine was everthing we were looking for. Located in the old town of Galatina, which has some wonderful architecture and stunning churches, it was a beatifully removated property with a fantastic private and sunny terrace which was wonderful for eating out on in the morning and evening. The kitchen was on the top floor with the terrace and above was another wonderful area for sunning yourself. The lounge, bedroom and bathroom was on the lower floors and were cool and more shady but they over looked the beautilul street that the property was located on. Galatina has some very good and reasonable restaurants. It felt very untouristy but it was a thriving italian town with lots of life and everyday shops. Although inland it was well located for drives to all the best places in Puglia including Gallipolli, Otrano, Lecce, and other fantastic beaches on the west and east coasts. It was a lovely intimate place and perfect for a romantic break in a real Itallian town. It has lots of stairs being a tall house so not that suitable for young children or older people who struggle with steps. The property was clean and communication with the property managers easy. Parking nearby is usually ok but the old town has narrow streets and can be confusing when locating the property. Enjoy

A Convenient and Comfortable Stay
The house is attractive, comfortable and well-equipped, very central and convenient. It's full of character and the roof terrace is a great advantage. Apart from parking and the wifi connection being a little temperamental, everything was as described and the owners' concerns that you have a comfortable stay was evident. We'd recommend.

Exactly what we were looking for fantastic
This is our second time at the apartment and was even better than our first. The apartment had everything we could ever want. I felt like I was coming home. Galatina so quiet by day and so vibrant at night. Neil and have visited every beach mentioned in visitors book and a lot of the restaurants. We used it as our .bible. The jewel in the crown. Real Italy. Cant wait to book for next year.A big thanks to my lovely husband for finding such a special place in the sun

A gem of an apartment in Galatina, Puglia
For our first visit to Puglia, Italy, we could not have picked a better place than this gem in the heart of the old town of Galatina. Plenty of space for the two of us although with the chillier than expected weather, we spent much of our time in the kitchen and on sunny days, the attached terrace. The apartment was spotless when we arrived and plenty of cooking utensils, glassware, and dishes, meant we could stay in and cook up recipes with the amazing variety of local produce. The local salami was fantastic as were the many, many bottles of wine we consumed during our month long stay. *grin* The town of Galatina itself was very interesting and we enjoyed walking around, stopping for coffee, and meeting the incredibly friendly locals. As we had a rental car, it was a great location for a home base, and we ended up exploring the entire heel of Italy and up to Trulli country around Ostuni. We stayed for just over a month, in March, and although the weather did not always cooperate, we had enough nice days to really explore the region. Would we come back to Galatina? A definite yes. Thanks to Jim and Paul for all their assistance from booking, to arranging a cleaning half way through, and helping out when we ran out of gas for the cooker...it was a delight to deal with them. Book your holiday now! *big smile*

Well equipped, clean, ideal situation.
We stayed in this wonderful apartment at the end of September. The weather was perfect and the apartment is in an ideal situation to explore the Selento peninsula. We loved the choice of beaches in the area and the Adriatic in particular. There is so much to see from Galipoli to all the smaller villages. It was great to stay in the centre of the town of Galatina as there is a good variety of restaurants and great shopping also. The apartment is a charming taste of Italian life and the rooftop terraces make it extra special. The local wines make it all perfect!

Fabulous
We have just returned from a wonderful week in Galatina. The apartment is just perfect, clean, spacious and well equipped with everything you could need. Jim was immensely helpful and make the booking process very simple. Cristiano met us with the keys and I'm pleased to say that we didn't need to call on his assistance during our stay, but I am confident that help was at hand if we needed it. The location is ideal, right in the centre of lovely Galatina, with shops, restaurants and bars all within very easy walking distance. The town is perfectly situated for visiting southern Puglia, both coasts are easily accessible, as is Lecce. An easy run from Brindisi airport. Everyone was so friendly and the food and local wine is excellent and very good value. I'm a picky holiday person and this was faultless in every way. Go and enjoy!

A real sense of place in a perfect location
We have had a really great time staying at this apartment in Galatina. It is perfectly located for exploring the town and surrounding towns on the Salento peninsula. The apartment was well equipped with facilities and we loved the feel of it, it had a great sense of place in the old town. The roof terraces were completely private and a great place to spend time. The owners and local contact were prepared to help us in any way we might need and we would recommend the apartment to anyone with the proviso that those concerned about the stairs and steps should be sure its for them before booking. The local people were just lovely and although we were only 10 days there we felt perfectly at home and welcomed by all the locals. The market traders, shopkeepers, cafe' and restaurant staff were at ease and very friendly so it was great fun practicing our italian and taking walks about the town. We saw beautiful churches and courtyards and we were surrounded with Baroque architecture both inside and outside these unique stone buildings the colours of honey. We made use of our time away from Galatina, driving to Lecce and taking the coast road clockwise from Otranto around to Gallipoli and up to Isadora. So much to see and do and we would certainly go again.

Absolutely perfect
We had such a great holiday. The apartment is really lovely and we had the most relaxing time lounging on the roof terrace with and watching movies on the projector. It has everything you need, is really well equipped and is perfectly located for exploring Salento. We had a little routine of getting back at the end of the day and sitting on the roof with olives and a bottle of Prosecco. The perfect lifestyle! And all the restaurants in Galatina were fab - La Campina being our absolute favourite. The kitchen in the apartment is very well equipped with everything you need and all the mod cons (although we enjoyed Galatina’s restaurants too much to do any cooking!) The area is really lovely, it feels very Italian, we saw hardly any other tourists and everyone was so friendly. There are excellent beaches, Porto Salvaggio was our absolute favourite beach, and really good for swimming. We have come back so refreshed and relaxed. It was just perfect. I will absolutely be recommending the apartment to everyone. Also the booking, arrival etc was all so smooth. So the perfect effortless holiday!

Gorgeous Galatina Getaway
Alas I only had four short days in Galatina, but they were spent in an apartment which has obviously been lovingly restored to it's original glory and even improved upon with understated luxury - all dark woods, marble, vaulted ceilings and tiled floors. Located in a quiet street moments away from the main square of Galatina's old town, the apartment has everything you'd ever want and need in a rental property and Galatina itself is, as I'm sure others will have noted, the perfect place to position yourself for exploring the stunning Salentino coast. Lecce, Gallipoli, Otranto, Santa Maria De Leuca, all the stunning beaches and much more is just an easy day trip from the apartment. Jim and Paul went way beyond the call of duty before I arrived, suggesting things to do and places to see and I really felt like they wanted to make sure I enjoyed my time away and got to experience all the things they love about Puglia - well as much as you can pack into a few days. The roof terraces were an oasis of sunshine and solitude (nobody else seemed to be on their roof the entire time I was there - in early May) and although I didn't have any meals on them (too busy with local restaurants) I'm sure a trip to the Thursday market would provide amazing ingredients for an excellent home cooked meal and relax on the terraces in the evening. Thanks again guys for all your hard work before I arrived and next time I'm in the Salento, 30 Robertini is a no brainer to be my first choice to stay. Natalie.

Our stay in Galatina
Set amidst the architectural beauty of Galatina's cobbled streets which lead to delightful piazzas and tantalizing giant doorways, this house is more than a holiday rental it is a home. Very well equipped and furnished, it provides the perfect spot from which to explore the 'heel' of Italy. We loved the kitchen opening onto the roof terrace. The shower room 'ensuite' to the bedroom which has one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in. The large, cool living room perfect for relaxing after dinner and some of the excellent local wine. The owners and local agent couldn't have done more from the initial enquiry to the information on arrival, we highly recommend this property.

Fantastic apartment
We had a fantastic holiday in Galatina. It is a great place to base yourself to explore the Salento region. The apartment is in a great location and well equipped. The roof terraces were a real bonus and we had good weather all week (October). The coast is only 20 mins away with excellent beaches. Galatina has some great places to eat and the people are very friendly - a real find and great value.

First Class holiday accommodation
What a fantastic apartment – excellent location, quality furnishings, comfortable bed, a well equipped kitchen and an amazingly good shower. It was so nice to have wine glasses provided (it never tastes the same when you drink it from a heavy duty tumbler) and to have good quality crockery and pans to use- it is the little things like this that make all the difference. We also thought the town was a really good choice of location as it was possible to get to all areas and towns of Puglia fairly easily and there were so many good restaurants to choose from in Galatina that we were spoilt for choice. We also loved the fact that we could walk to them so that for once we could enjoy a bottle of wine together instead of one of us having to stick to water for the evening. The town has well stocked supermarkets and speciality food and gift shops with pleasant friendly and helpful staff. Local wine can be purchased by the litre for a Euro or so and it really is excellent quality. I am certain that we will be back in the future!

A dream house
This place is incredible! We were looking for a nice spot in south Italy... dreaming of a place where we could cook our own meals, lay on the sun in a nice terrace, be close to the beach, buy groceries at a local market, visit historical sites, enjoy good restaurants and feel at home. We found it here. Besides all the beauty of Galatina's town, this 3 floor apartment has charm and character. Everything was ready on our arrival, clean, nice decoration, comfortable, ready to use, A/C, and two incredible terraces to enjoy our meals out, have a sun bath or check out the sunset over the incredible city of Galatina. There was a book where all precedent guest wrote the best places to check out, beach, sites...The owners of this home really know how to treat their guest. If I have to recommend one incredible spot, is this place! Thank you again! Klaudia

Customer Service and Accommodations - 5 Stars
Let me start with the booking and information stage of our holiday in this lovely apartment, Jim and Paul are amazing. All our emails and questions were answered promptly; the information booklet they sent by email concerning the apartment was very concise and it included detailed information on Galatina. Putting together this booklet must have been a labor of love, these guys are not just landlords renting you an apartment, their enthusiasm and love for all of Galatina and Puglia is clear. The apartment’s location in the old-town section of town is perfect; everything was only a few minutes walk; many restaurants, shops and a local market. While it was nice having a fully equipped modern kitchen, we ate out 5 of our 6 nights in a different place every time. The restaurant scene in town is varied and vibrant with several great ones just minutes form the apartment and the prices could be at least 40% less then Tuscany! A car hire would not be need if you just stayed in town but is a plus for exploring the surrounding area including short 30+ minutes drive to either the coasts. The apartment itself is exactly as described – very comfortable, nicely decorated, and well equipped with all the modern conveniences, all this while still maintaining the original charm and architecture of the building. We could not have asked for better accommodations. One of many highlights of our holiday was a drive we took hitting the Adriatic Coast at Porto Badisco and following winding, rugged coastline to the very tip of the heel at Santa Maria di Leuca, the beautiful scenery of that drive will stay with me for a long time. For some of the most gorgeous beaches with white sand and crystal clear water head for the Ionian Coast, we found lovely areas just north of Gallipoli and be sure to include a stop over in the picture perfect town of Gallipolli. Do your homework, ask many questions and I’m sure you’ll reach the same conclusion if you book this apartment

About the host

Hosted by Jim Cullingford or Paul Nuzzo

Host profile image
Paul and Jim bought the property on Channel 4's A Place in the Sun (filmed in 2006 and aired for the first time in April 2007). You may be able to see the show on Channel 4 on Demand (4oD), Series 5, Episode 3 (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/a-place-in-the-sun/4od#2924314).

Why they chose this property

This was the property Amanda Lamb (the show's presenter) loved .... and if you don't believe me, you'll find she's since bought a similar property in a nearby town, renovated by the same developer, Nigel Wilson of Puglia Estates ... the only 'place in the sun' Amanda has bought on all her travels and from all the properties she's visited over the years!!

What makes this property unique

Apart from being able to preview your holiday by watching the show, you'll be able to live the sweet life in a beautiful 17th century property with the original features but all the mod-cons too. The apartment is in a quiet part of the historical centre, in a non-tourist town with fabulous restaurants (no 'tourist menus' in sight), wonderfully friendly people, minutes walk from amenities and the summer's open air concerts, and within easy reach of all that the Salento has to offer. Spend your days driving around either coast, visiting the ports and beaches and seeing some incredible architecture. Return to Galatina for a drink (and people watch) in one of the local squares before a very short walk to your home from home and enjoy an outdoor film on the roof terrace with local wine and food bought in a local market and cooked in our well equipped kitchen.

Galatina really is the perfect central base for the Salento. It's easy to navigate and a beautiful, friendly, interesting and unspoiled historical town ...within easy reach of both coastlines but away from the evening seaside crowds.
