About the host
Hosted by Phil Verner
I'm a retired designer (exhibition/interior) and wood craftsman who loves timber houses. I design and make furniture and sculptural pieces often using recycled and salvaged timber. I'm currently restoring a timber house over 120 years old where I live with my wife Ann in Sydney.
Why they chose this property
I purchased the land where the house now stands and have designed, built, extended and furnished the house over 40 plus years. As many trees were retained as possible and the house enjoys an outlook directly into the bush and overlooks the walking track to Govetts Leap. While sitting in "urban bush" the house is only 10 -15 minutes very pleasant walk to Blackheath village with its cafes, restaurants, pubs & shops. The swimming pool (for summer) is even closer at the end of the street (5min walk)
What makes this property unique
This is not a "standard house". It features a unique design, timber flooring & panelling along with handcafted furniture & decorative features. Care has been taken in the design to provide outlook and access for sun. Cross ventilation is available to provide comfort in summer including an "air chimney" to bring cool basement air into the main bedroom. A double sided wood fireplace is provided for winter backed up by two externally flued gas heaters (ie no fumes in the house). Electric wall panel heaters are provided in the upostairs bedrooms A collection of largely B&W Australian photography is displayed in the house usually showing the Blue Mountains. The house is in a moist pocket and the bush garden includes many tree ferns (4 different species)
