VRBO website was having issues before we checked in and Dave and Penny made sure we had all the info we needed. The location was great and the house felt like a home. After a day at the beach catching crabs, returning to the hot tub was perfect for our family of four. We will be back!

Thank you for renting our home. Thanks for the 5 star review!! We work very hard to keep the home in the best shape we can. Looking forward to your return visit!!!
We enjoyed our stay very much. Easy walk to the beach and enjoyed the game room. Only issues were kitchen sink not draining and poor quality linens and towels.

Thank you for taking such good care of our retirement home. Sinks on septic systems can drain slowly if not flushed properly. We were there prior to you stay and all seemed well. Thanks again and we hope you appreciated us for allowing you to change your reservation and increase amount of people. Three heat registers were left on PGE emailed us to expect a high electric bill 😩

Ahhh....mazing!
Had a great stay! House is immaculate, views from every window, all the comforts of home, easy parking, close to beach...truly the most beautiful home in the village, yet comfy.
We very much enjoyed our stay. The house had lots of room and the heater and all other equipment worked wonderfully. Home owner replied quickly to all questions which we appreciated :)

Shari and family were GREAT tenants. Hurry back!!!!
Mainly used for sleep and shower since we gathered at a nearby home for our stay of a week. Some of the onsite use notes should be included in the description to avoid any concerns that may lead you to contact the owners. However, they usually responded in a pretty timely manner.

The renters were fantastic!! We reached out to renter for clarification on his comment as we are not sure what he is referring to. A framed note that says “ reminder we are on septic system”?? There are many people that are not used to how the septic systems work in shore line properties.
Our family had a wonderful reunion at this house. With the beach only a few blocks away, we were able to easily access the beach and ocean. The house was roomy and comfortable, the kitchen well stocked, and we especially enjoyed the reading nook with spectacular views. Penny was accommodating, helpful and easily accessible. Thanks for a lovely stay!

Glad you enjoyed your stay. You are always welcome to return! Penny & Dave
We had a great stay. House isn’t newly remodeled or anything but it’s a great house. Has some quirks - ie could use some touch up paint here and there, shower handle is finicky, nothing major. Overall it’s clean and well kept with a cool nautical theme and some nice old antiques. Beautiful views from upstairs and you can’t beat the location - just half block to beach trail. It’s a great spot to stay!

Thanks Justin!!! Prior renters chipped the house trim :(. It’s being repaired next week! Last remodel was 2010. Hope you come back REAL soon. I think you left some clothing in the master bed room!!!!!!:):)
We rented this home for Mother’s Day weekend. It fit us all perfectly and we were very comfortable. The kitchen was great to cook in after our day of clamming. We all were able to work together to make a wonderful homemade meal. We played pool and used the hot tub. It was lovely. There is only parking for one car.

Thank you. It was a pleasure to have your family. Please keep us in mind for your next gathering!!!
We had a great time. Because of issues not really caused by the owners the local infrastructure (water and sewer) were dated and limited. As far as location, fantastic access to beach. House was a really fun house with jacuzzi and pool table. We would recommend this house but would caution renters about the limited water and sewer systems.

Thanks Dr Don. We really appreciated it when you called and told us how clean the house was for your stay!! We try!!! Yes the coastal homes are ALL on septic systems. The village was established in the early 1950’s. So the systems are sensitive. As you know, all of CA is in a drought. The water at DB is ranked in and held in 2 tanks to supply water for all of the homes. Hurry back
When we pulled up we were so excited but once we entered our opinion changed. The cleanliness of the house was very poor, they do not allow pets but the floors were full of dog hair and dirt. We had to look for everything as nothing was easily accessible and the bathrooms were poorly stocked. I tried to reach out privately to the owners as I sent pictures of the floors and my concerns but their response did not seem like they cared and offered no apologies only responses to my concerns that really didn't make a difference. I have never written a bad review but felt that their lack of concern for the price you pay to rent this home was less then stellar.

Niki- you reached out to us to ask if there was wifi, and a coffee maker. You did that while driving to the beach. You did not look at the website and review what was offered at the house, Your lake of communication caused your disappointment. The VRBO contract was for 4 people. You had 6.. Was this what caused "poorly stocked bathrooms". As I recall- you did not use the bathroom in the game room. The door was never opened??? I hope that your mom enjoyed the fresh flowers from our garden.

Disappointed.
We struggled quite a bit with parking our larger SUV. So parking is definitely an issue here. Also many times throughout the day, there was a sewer smell in the house. We couldn’t tell if it was actually coming from the house or the outside neighborhood. Linens were very scarce and not a good quality. Lots and lots of do not do rules posted all over the house which was a bit stressful. It’s almost as if the owners maybe shouldn’t use this as a rental because it seems like it overwhelms them as well. We received several text messages and emails just reminding us of all these rules. Overall the view from the backyard was the best part of the stay. We will NOT be staying here again however. And NOT a good place for kids. And also to note, is they had some kind of custom-made bedspread in this rental house that they accused us of leaving two stains on. They automatically charged are credit card a couple of hundred dollars. And we never received pictures or an opportunity to explain it or anything. So we are obviously contesting that charge. We use Vrbo many times around the world and our ranking as renters is five stars. I hope the owners take this input from us and implement some changes so there are better experiences for future renters.

Dan- the water is trucked into Dillon Beach and stored in tanks up on the ridge. That is what you smelt. You were sent a text of the black stains on the beige and white bedspread. We asked you what they were so that we could try to remove them. You did not respond, we could not remove the stains. When we contacted VRBO about how to resolve it- they said to charge you for the replacement. The bedspread matches the window covering and we had to source the fabric and have it remade. We believe in communicating with our guests. Our feedback is that they appreciate it.
Lots of Hidden information until you arrive
There is something wrong with the septic system because they have signs everywhere If it’s yellow let it mellow if it’s brown flush it down.! Had I known this before paying $$$$ a night I would of never chose this house . The Hot Tub says don’t turn up the heat so you’re basically sitting in warm water . We received one towel each for three nights ! There is a washer and dryer that you are not allowed to use there is no trash service so you are expected to haul your trash away in the car with you with dirty toilet paper in the trash! The parking spot is for a little tiny car and I drive a suburban! They ask you to throw your trash away at the beach which is a $10 fee to go into the beach so basically I feel like you’re paying for their trash service! There was other rentals with garbage is that they ask you to throw away on Cliff Street to be creative I think that’s wrong! Their video (library) was only six DVDs and the player did not work and the remotes did not work the batteries were rotted. There is only one bathroom downstairs that is a toilet you have to leave the house to go outside into a garage where there is another shower , but they never shower inside they recommend you shower outside with your family and your children all around ! I got this house as a gift for my parents and I was hugely disappointed I would’ve never rented this house had I known all these things were gonna be wrong with it everything in the kitchen was not clean and it had dried food on some of the plates so we had to wash everything before we used it .

Christine- Our home is 100 yds from the beach. The home is 65+ yrs old. Septic systems are delicate. Paper & grease items should not be placed in it.The hot tub is set at 100' and can go up to the max of 104'. Due to COVID and rentals being closed many owners have stopped trash service. In our instructions we suggest taking a bag or two to the beach when you go to the beach. Not to drive 100 yds/pay ??There are 8 towels provided. There are 3 bathrooms inside the home. The kitchen is pristine. Appliances are new as of March 2021. Prior to booking you should have read the "amenities" page on VRBO. Yesterday you contacted me about fees that you where charged by VRBO?? I hope that you were able to sort out your confusion about charges. The home owner only receives rental fee, TOT tax, and cleaning . VRBO remits the fees AFTER the rental checks out. My suggestion is that you research and read the entire web site before you commit. You can also contact the owner with any questions. You did not contact us with any concerns until a month post stay.
Oyster shell house is a roomy multi level house hosted by Dave and Penny who reached out after I made the reservation to have me complete the contract and let me know only pod families were able to stay together, due to Corona19. I requested information on fishing charters and Dave kindly gave me a contact.
In preparation a few days before leaving I reviewed the contract and noticed a new review that mentioned not flushing toilet paper. I reached out again and was told no toilet paper is septic safe and I could place used TP in the trash and by the way they had stopped trash service so it's my responsibility to find a place to dump our trash.
The day we are heading out I get word from Penny the hot tub circulation pump went out last week and a repair man would be out on day two of our stay. The hot tub was a top reason why I picked this rental so this information was upsetting. When I mentioned this to Penny she asked if I would like to reschedule however we already off work and on our way. The response to this was, check in is not until 3pm. We knew this.
I was never told the outcome of the spa repair, we had to reach out over our stay to ask if the tub was repaired. At one point Penny said she was at a spa store and to call her! It was 5pm on our last night and we were worn out from the he back and forth confusing communication.
There was a smell that came from the septic system our entire stay. If someone flushed (even#1) or was in the shower the unpleasant smell filled the downstairs.
With our contract it was clearly stated on the last day check out was at 11am and if we were going to hang around town longer we would have to move our car from the house. The morning we left we received a message at 9am saying to stay as long as we like that day because the cleaners weren't coming until the next day. Would have been nice if Penny would have mentioned that at check in for planning purposes.
This was a very disappointing and expensive rental and did not add to our 50th birthday celebration getaway.

Lauren and Eric, we are glad you enjoyed our home and that we were able to connect you to a private bay cruise. It is impossible to anticipate when a circulation pump will wear out. The spa was fixed on Sunday- which is why we wanted to offer you an extra day- when the cleaners gave us their schedule. All of the Village of Dillon is on septic service. Ours was serviced in July- so you may have been swelling any of the other nearby homes. Our family has been at the house this week to celebrate a birthday, and there are NO issues. Dave & Penny
When we arrived at the property we were so excited a couple days away from life. We couldn't help but notice all the post it notes ALL over stating we can't do this and we can't do that. Or this is broken and that was broken don't use. With Limited shower time. Was little annoying but we obliged. The first night we decided to get into the hot tub couldn't stay in for longer then 15min because there was so much bleach in it we could hardly breath. We didn't let that ruin the trip. They state no pets but the place is covered in dog hair thank god no one is allergic. We stayed the rest of the weekend without any issues. It was very nice of the owner to let us know that the cleaning people weren't coming in at check out and we could stay longer. We didn't we had to get home. The owner sends me a message before they even get to the house asking me if we broke things ( like wine glass) fishing to charge me for something... We didn't we brought all of our own things (paper products so we didn't have to wash anything).
But wait the owners get to the house 3 days later and say they are charging me for the hot tub to be drained, cleaned and refilled because it was so dirty. That we didn't take a shower before we got in. How do you know? Not one of us had sunscreen on and we did rinse off before got in. Definitely had to shower when we got out because of all the bleach. Still waiting for the pictures of this so called dirty hot tub.
How can this be there was so much bleach in there. There isn't a sign or a post anywhere that states you would charge if we used the hot tub. Maybe you should lock that up also and STATE its broken or add another sticky note.
Stating that things are broken.. garage door, which we know works..washer/dryer you just dont want to pay the PG&E bill (you definitely make sure everyone can see the bill since its posted and laminated for everyone to see..) I would not recommend renting from these people as there are other nicer homes and honest hosts around. Its way to stressful to rent this one..We took care of your home and did everything you asked for, and all you could do was look for ways to charge me more money.

Jamie, thank you for renting our vacation home.
The issue is the hot tub and the charge for cleaning it. The hot tub was clean when you arrived. The tub does not contain bleach. We use industry standard bromide. After your rental the hot tub was dirty. There was a slimy film in the tub that we removed with a strainer. The hot tub had to be drained and refilled. This is a 5-hour task. We reported the situation to VRBO along with pictures and you were only charged for the cost of the water, which is expensive in Dillon Beach. Water is trucked in and stored in a holding tank that services the Dillon Beach village. Which leads to your comments about the washer and dryer. Because of the expense of water we do not provide laundry service. Washer/Dryer is not listed as an amenity on our VRBO listing. With respect to signage, we have found that providing best practices helps protect important systems and services for current and future renters. For example, given that many of our renters are not familiar with septic systems, we find it effective to share best “septic etiquette”. To help keep the hot tub clean we have signage that asks renters to shower before using the hot tub.
About the host
Hosted by Penny
We purchased our home with the intention to retire in the Dillon Beach Village. It is a home with all amenities that are needed for a casual or formal stay. We entertain often at Dillon Beach.
Why they chose this property
Dillon Beach is less windy than Bodega Bay and much less foggy than Stinson Beach or Bodega Bay combined! The traffic is minimal. Our property is 100 yards from the beach with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, Point Reyes Peninsula and Tomales Bay.
What makes this property unique
The house is uniquely positioned to provide backyard sun and privacy, surrounded by a beautiful, tranquil garden. Two outdoor showers to ease the transition from a day at the beach to relaxing in the hot tub - the hot tub is not sand friendly :). Enjoy a book or meditation in upstairs nook with panoramic views...great for watching the sun set.
