About this property

Ideal location to explore historic Strathalbyn, Wineries, good food and scenery

Set in over an acre of gardens on the banks of the river Angas sit our heritage listed C1860 bluestone restored cottages.

The Gasworks once provided the gas for the town of Strathalbyn until it ceased production in 1917 and is now beautifully converted to accommodation for its owners and guests in our lovingly restored private fully self contained cottages.

The Stables Cottage as its name suggests was once the home to the horses that lived on site but is now a cosy romantic cottage for two with it's own lounge/kitchette and separate bedroom with queen bed and ensuite spa bathroom. (please note the shower is postponed over the bath and is therefore unsuitable for people with mobility issues, best option is the Garden Suite but if you are okay with the steps in the flooring, the Manager Cottage has a spa with separate shower).

Situated at the end of the gravel drive, privacy is guaranteed and you enjoy beautiful views of the gardens. Take a stroll around the beautiful gardens, maybe enjoy a picnic on the lawns.

This Cottage not suitable for pets, please book our pet friendly option The Managers Cottage.

Choose to cook breakfast in your own kitchen with the ample provisions provided for your first two days, or you can opt to have your breakfast cooked for you and delivered to you at a time of your choosing, contact us for prices and more information.

A laundrette is conveniently located approx 200 metres away across the road from the property. NBN internet for free is available in all our cottages.

Parking whilst staying is in our diagonal car spaces just outside the property. You are welcome to drive down to unpack and then again when you are packing.

We are situated in the beautiful historic town of Strathalbyn, the southern end of High Street, just a short stroll from the town centre with its Antique shops, Heritage railway, Motor Museum and many dining options. Local wineries and a golf course are within a 10/15 minute drive. Beautiful beaches at Goolwa, Port Elliot and Victor Harbour are an easy short drive away 30/40 mins.

We both had corporate jobs in Melbourne and decided do have a tree change, gave up our jobs in Interior design and my husband managing in IT. Our children were grown and moved out and it was time to find something we enjoyed and gave us a more simple lifestyle; We enjoy gardening and lavish attention on our just over an acre of landscaped gardens winning best business gardens award seven years in a row and 2019 we also won The overall Grand Champion Garden Award. We also enjoy good wine and food and boy did we pick the right town. Strathalbyn has welcomed us with open arms and we enjoy the community and friendship we have found, needless to stay we are happy with our choices and hope during your short time with us you will experience the beauty and friendliness that embodies this town.

Why they chose this property

We spent a long time looking for that special place to run our accommodation. It had to be close to a town, walking distance to places to eat, coffee shops and hopefully a nice pub. We wanted something that had an historic background or something special about it and finally it had to be in a place people would want to visit. The Gasworks ticked all our boxes and it was love at first site. We intend to leave it better than we found it as we consider ourselves more caretakers than owners as this piece of history belongs to the town as well as us.

What makes this property unique

Built in C1890 The Gasworks was created out of the local Bluestone and along with its lovingly restored cottages the walkways/walls around the garden are also of this beautiful stone, we love the curve of the roof and its high ceilings. Location on the banks of the pretty River Angas is also a beautiful bonus. The gardens abound with birds and beautiful blooms, we find it the perfect haven and hope you do too. Short walk to the town, pubs, shops and eateries.
