The House was the perfect place for our family. Beautiful small village, kind neighbors and cute donkeys just ourside.
We very much enjoyed our stay. Thank you Mari♥️
Gorgeous stay. Wake up to a chorus of owls, tinkling of goat bells, bird songs............beautiful restful and comfortable. Friendly unique village, accommodation has a great bed and wonderful shower. Outside areas and casual strolls around the scenic location ........ a memorable stay. Highly recommended.

Old house in quiet hamlet
We enjoyed staying here, it was lovely and quiet and very near the motorway to everywhere. Comillas is 15 min away. The dining chairs are old as is the fridge!! The beds were very comfy.

I am afraid that the damp local climate quickly corrugates the materials that fridges, washing machines and dryers are made out of, although they are only a few years old. You are right to point out that the antique dining room chairs probably need the carpinter to give them a once over, which we will have done soon!
We enjoyed our holiday. The cottage would benefit from an audit of crockery, cooking utensils etc. eg, more breakfast bowls needed and no teapot lid.
A welcome pack in the house giving info how things work, eg recycling, hot water, where to get firewood, and general info of places to visit would be good and perhaps a visitors comments book.
Appreciated Mari, the housekeeper, help and cleaning very much. It’s a beautiful building with nice linens and very well located in the area.
A beautiful setting and a fantastic location to explore this great region. We were very well looked after by Mari the housekeeper ad the place was spotless with luxury linen, comfy beds and sofas and all that we needed in the kitchen. We ate outside each evening which was lovely. From the house we had days out at the local beaches, cycle rides in the hills and had a lovely meal out in Cabezón de la Sal. We were even there for the local fiesta (August 5th) and were treated to traditional music and celebrations - it did get very loud in the evening but it was a one off and it was fun to join in with!) Gracias.
Having spent vacation in historical Italian Vrbo homes we were super excited for this cottage. Booked 2 days, but left after 1. The outside appeared it had not been cleaned in a long while. The inside had a peculiar musty odor. I love shabby boho style, but the place just is shabby. There was nothing charming in the barrio. The photographer did a great marketing job, we were duped.

Dear Kate and Cynthia Quackenbush,
I am very sorry to hear that the Gatehouse was a dissapointment.
I have to say that this is the first time that our guests in the Gatehouse have ever made a complaint of this nature. The house has gotten solid five star reviews until now!I am very sorry indeed.
The Palacio de Hualle and the Gatehouse are a 17th Century construction. The stones and wooden beams have been in place for four hundred years. The stones sometimes "shed" somewhat. But this is not a lack of cleanliness, but a characteristic of ancient stones and an old, historic farm house.
Another consideration is that our region is very damp and this has been a particularly rainy spring. However, Mari is very dilligent about cleaning and airing the house, the latter being essential in this damp region. But we make a special effort to make the house welcoming , by lighting a wood fire for the arrival of guests, and arranging fresh flowers in a vase.
Also, the Gatehouse is in a country setting, with horses and other livestock grazing in immediate area, local dogs and cats roaming more or less freely, in an area that perhaps has been muddy with recent rains.
Again, I apologize if the Gatehouse was a dissapointment.
Lovely gatehouse next to the palacio located in the Treceño countryside
We had a wonderful stay in Cantabria at Palacio Hualle and the adjacent Gatehouse.
We enjoyed the stay very much with its quirky layout and enjoyed reading the book about the architect Henri Jova who restored the grounds.
Mari, the housekeeper is the true star of the show making us a delicious traditional Spanish paella which was superb! Also this was for 12 people! (La paella estaba deliciosa!)
Treceño is a lovely peaceful area and the Palacio has spacious grounds with a little chapel in the grounds and donkeys in the ajacent field.
The Palacio is very traditional and mixed the old with the modern well with antique furniture and with a modern well equipped kitchen with range cooker and an American style fridge/freezer.
There is a small town centre in Treceño where you can get reasonably priced food, coffee and beers/wines etc. The Mercadona supermarket is a couple of kilometers away and only a few minutes drive (given the area, a car is probably a necessity for most people unless doing the trip as part of a cycling holiday)
We would definately stay again!
The communications with the owner and the housekeeper were excellent. We had a well stoked kitchen, a wood stove with wood to burn, and plenty of room. The house has all the comforts of a modern place with the charm of a rustic old house. I recommend it.

Totalmente aconsejable.
The house is very nice, with charm. Good place to visit the region. We had a very nice stay!

About the host
Hosted by Margaret Jova
In 1988, the Jova brothers recuperated this old family house where their great, great grandmother was born. The house had been abandoned for decades and was in a state of ruin. The North American brothers, Henri Jova, an architect and Joseph John Jova, a career diplomat restored the palacio. Their family lovingly maintains the house and continues to gather here every summer.
