About this property
Rustic Cabin on Private Pond in Stratton Vermont Close to Stratton Ski Area
The Cole Cabin is available for rental for the 2025-26 ski season.
The Cole Cabin is located in the town of Stratton next to a private pond at 1700 feet on a quiet picturesque dead-end dirt road just below the Stratton Mountain ski resort, which is roughly one and one-half miles away.
Rustic & Comfortable.
Warm and friendly, this is a cozy dwelling, comfortably furnished.
The one-person stand-up kitchen has a stainless steel sink, dishwasher, smooth-top electric range, coffee-maker, microwave, toaster and a refrigerator. The log living room has a view of the pond and is cheered by a brick fireplace with an Avalon wood burning fireplace insert. Gas heat is available when needed. For dining, there is a locally made free form pine slab table.
There are two bathrooms in the cabin, one in the master bedroom and one in back of the fireplace with a shower big enough to hold two people. Across from the shower is a separate lavatory.
In the hallway leading from the living area to the master bedroom are two double-sized bunks. The master bedroom with a queen bed has its own bath with shower. Upstairs are games and a TV with DVD player. The Cole Cabin is provided with a wired access point that provides wireless or wired high-speed internet service. There is also a DVD player and cable TV.
Note for summer guests: The Cole Cabin does not have air conditioning, but is rather like an old fashioned summer place (though it is a year-round insulated house), and has fans including a bedroom ceiling fan. The evenings in Vermont tend to drop down into the fifties or low 60s during the summer. In front of the Cabin is a patio facing the pond. The patio has a table, adirondack chairs and a propane fired grill for barbecuing.
Note for Winter Guests: This a year-round fully insulated and heated dwelling. Rent the cabin for the season, a month or for a holiday week.
A Private Pond.
Summer:
The three quarter acre country pond offers refreshing swimming and recreation. In the summer, a rowboat is provided for fun. The grassy banks of the pond provide safe and easy entry into the water; it is a great place to enjoy the sun on a hot day. A screened gazebo graces the far shore.
Winter:
During the winter, the pond can be used for skating. The land around the cabin is available for snow shoeing and cross country skiing.
The cabin is still available for Nov-February for the 2025 - 26 ski season.
Lots to Do Nearby.
For a good hike, you can take the Long Trail which winds it way through the back of Stratton Mountain. From the cabin, it is a pleasant hike or a short drive to a waterfall at Pikes Falls, a beautiful rocky place for diving, sun bathing and hiking as well as a cool dip. The water is very cold even in the late August. Within a few miles, up at the Stratton ski area or down in the valley, are good eating places. There are country auctions, fairs, antiques and within a half an hour's drive, concerts and summer theatre in Weston and Dorset.
Rental Details:
The Cabin can be rented most of the time. If you are interested in renting the Cole Cabin for more than a month, contact the owner for a special discounted rate. The Cole Cabin can also be rented for the ski season or partial ski season.

About the host
Hosted by Jeremy Cole
I grew up in the Cole Cabin and the Cole House. Stratton was started by my mother, Malvine Cole, who was often called the Mother of Stratton Mountain. I learned to ski on the hillside near the Cabin and the House as well as at Bromley, Stratton and Mount Snow, the three ski areas in the area. I took over ownership in 1997.
Why they chose this property
The Cole Cabin offers an old style of vacation that is quiet, private and away from it all in the backwoods of Vermont, but it is also close to the Stratton Ski Area and other places of interest in Southern Vermont. This is a warm, friendly, and cozy dwelling that some guests refer to as a hobbit house.
The Cole Cabin was originally built out of logs cut down with hand saws the old fashioned way and then transported to the cabin site with horses, where they were placed on top each other and chinked.

What makes this property unique
Quiet, private with old fashioned charm.
A 3/4 acre pond that has been recently cleaned out and re-landscaped with its own rowboat and access is a special part of the Cole Cabin experience. Young children are especially attracted to the pond with its many water creatures (frogs, salamanders, fish).
A brook flows on the back of the property.
If you like to hike, you can drive to the other side of Stratton and access the Long Trail as well as a trail that leads to the Stratton fire tower.
The Stratton Resort is very close, but you are not a part of it, so you get the convenience of being close, but are away from the noise and congestion. It takes seven minutes to drive up to the ski area.
Pikes Falls is two miles down the road, which means you can take a leisurely walk to it or be there in minutes if you drive down to it.
Manchester is 20 minutes away, the Vermont Country Store is another 20 minute drive. Brattleboro is 45 minutes away.
