Luxury 18th C renovated stone house with heated swimming pool in countryside

Le Rossignol

A delightful conversion of a stone barn nestled in the heart of the rolling French countryside surrounded by sunflowers. Beautiful family home completely renovated near the historical town of St Jean D'Angely. Spacious and light, ideal for large families or for several friends holidaying together. Comfortably accommodates 8 people in 4 bedrooms all with ensuite bathrooms and spacious open plan living area. There are 3 bedrooms upstairs and a 4th bedroom with a wet room, both suitable for wheelchair access on the ground floor. Cot available. There is a salt water, heated swimming pool (8m x 4m) which is private and for exclusive use of guests and is available beginning of May until the end of October. There is also a covered terrace providing shade at the pool side and a nice place to relax and watch the sun go down in the evening. By the pool side there is also a petanque court (4mx13m) for your leisure. There is a patio and outside dining is available together with relaxation chairs. In the main garden you will find a games room for darts and table tennis (ping pong) together with a further sun room to relax in and escape the heat. From the moment you arrive at Le Rossignol you will find the pace of life winding down in this peaceful rural setting. The Atlantic coast's sandy beaches, La Rochelle and Île d'Oléron are 50 mins away. The Roman town of Saintes, Cognac, Rochefort and Royan are not far away. The local Château de Dampierre sur Boutonne is a jewel of the Renaissance (16th Century) and is available for tours. The local donkey sanctuary is also not to be missed. The area offers great cycling and walking. Horse-riding available locally and Golf 40km away .
All fully equipped, beautifully decorated with antique furniture. The closest supermarket is in Aulnay, about 15 min by car from us. It is open from 9 to 7.15 pm Monday to Saturday. There is also a lovely little market in Aulnay on Sunday mornings with some excellent fruit and vegetables, meat and fish stalls.

For children there is a great Zoo at La Palmyre, an excellent aquarium at La Rochelle and an indoor aqua park at Jonzac.

Wonderful secluded getaway.

We had a great week at the property. It is very well set up for family groups-our young kids/toddlers really enjoyed the gardens, grounds and the swimming pool. The pool area is very well set up including the covered patio, and boules court. The swimming pool was secure with a good fence and gate which we liked. The surrounding area is very picturesque and you can enjoy lovely mornings and evenings sat outside near the barbecue. A wonderful stay and we would love to come back.

Another amazing week in Dampierre-sur-Boutonne

Karen and David are always so helpful and the property and facilities are excellent. We had a fantastic week in the pool, then playing table tennis, darts and Boule each evening. Aulnay market is great on a Sunday and the Intermarche is big enough for most things so you don’t need to travel much once you arrive. Niort is worth a visit as is the local Chateau ….. English cable TV also a plus just to connect with mothership a few times. A peaceful retreat to relax …

Great stay

Lovely house, gardens and pool all fully equipped with everything you need for a great holiday. The nearby town of Aulnay has a lovely small Sunday morning market and you are only 50 mins from the coast for a day out by the sea so take your bucket and spade! Happy to recommend.

Wondeful 2 week stay

We had a lovely stay. The house is lovely well equipt and has everything you need. The outside area is truely stunning. Karen was responsive from booking to out final day and helped answer any quueries we had. I would highly reccomend a stay here.

Family holiday

The house is well equipped with activities, swimming pool, table tennis, boules, and a garden to play in. It was very efficient and easy to manage for everyone. We had to travel quite far for supplies and restaurants as everything local was shut. We had a lovely family holiday.

Fantastic place for a relaxing break

In the middle of sunflower fields and hay you hardly think about civilisation until you need more bread cheese and wine. With supermarkets and local stores nearby you don’t want for anything. Lots to see and do in the area but we spent most of the time in the beautiful pool. Playing darts, pétanque and table tennis .,,,

We booked this house to visit France with family ranging from ages 6 - 82 and had a great time.Highlights:- There was nothing we needed that hadn’t been thought about including all the basics like bin bags, washing up liquid, salt & pepper etc- Super clean everywhere and beds and outdoor seating were super comfortable- Great size heated pool, darts, table tennis and boule kept the kids occupied- Large fridge meant we could do a large shop- Lovely welcome gift of wine, fresh bread and butter- Wifi worked well throughout the house and outsideThe house part of a converted barn and is adjoined to another 2 properties but is very quiet day and night and surrounded by lots of farm land.There is a large Intermarche supermarket 12 mins drive away in Aulnay and a very small camping shop 5 mins away. The owner was very responsive to all of our questions. The only addition we would have found helpful would have been some details of locations / opening times of restaurants, boulangeries etc within nearby villages as many of these don’t have very useful websites if at all.

Family Vacation

I spent a lovely 2 weeks with my family here, in July 2024. The communication from Karen before and during the holiday was next to none. We had an internet issue which was resolved immediately. Since it was mid July, we hit 39 degrees for a couple of days but the 2 outhouses, one by the pool and one by the garden provided ample shade for my 1 year old when it was hot. There was plenty of chairs indoors and outdoors as well as towels etc. that saved us having to pack any! We decided to do some of the recommendations Karen mentioned like the Zoo and Cognac which was lovely. We will definitely be back next year. Thanks Karen and David.

Wonderful place to stay

Karen & David’s house is lovely - full of character and rustic charm, looking out over fields and woods. Inside each of the 4 bedrooms (comfortable beds) had an en-suite shower room, complete with a plentiful supply of white towels (+ swimming towel) for each person. The house was beautifully clean and well equipped with everything you might need. The garden was a real delight with secluded areas for eating and relaxing. The private pool was a great hit with everyone- particularly the grandchildren (5 & 3). Dampierre-sur-Boutonne is a very pretty village with its chateau. The grocery shop in the village does excellent croissants and bread (make sure to order the day before!). We all agreed that it was the perfect place for an extended family to stay. For anyone wanting a comfortable and relaxing holiday I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Karen & David’s house. Communication with them was excellent, before and during our stay and they were keen to ensure that we had all we needed.

Pleasant stay in Charentes-Maritime

A very pleasant fortnight in this well-appointed house. Worked really well for a 8 person mix of adults and kids. Good pool and pétanque court and lovely to eat and sit out in the summer heat. Fantastic night skies. Quiet corner of France with plenty to see and explore. Happy to recommend.

A Wonderful Holiday

We spent a wonderful week at this beautiful property. Karen and David are excellent hosts and really helpful. The house was spotlessly clean and very well equipped. We loved the different outdoor seating spaces for alfresco meals and drinks The pool was superb and helped us to cool off and relax in the very warm weather. We loved exploring the local area. We can recommend Aulnay Sunday Market, the towns of St Jean D'Angeley and Cognac and also the Chateau at Dampierre just down the road which is beautiful and has a really interesting history and is great for families to explore as well as the nearby Poitou Donkey farm which is well worth a visit.

We spent a lovely week at Karen & David’s beautiful property. The property was exactly as described. To be honest, the pictures do not do the property justice. It was spotlessly clean and everything was too hand. The welcome gift pack was also a very nice touch. We spent our days exploring (La Rochelle, Rochefort, Sunday Market at Aulnay, St Jean D,angley and some pretty villages along the Charente River) When not exploring we spent lazy days by the heated pool and perfecting our pétanque skills. Overall it was an absolutely fantastic holiday and we would not hesitate to book again, but probably for longer next time.

Belle maison pour de belles vacances

Nous avons passé deux très belles semaine dans la maison de Karen. La maison est propre, bien équipée, au calme avec une belle piscine. Il est indispensable d'avoir une voiture sur place pour se déplacer. Karen est très réactive en cas de questions. Merci encore !

Vacances idéales

Ces congés d'été 2020 se sont préparés dans des conditions très inhabituels. Et nous avons eu la chance de trouver la maison idéale au charme fou assortie d'un confort total et du plus grand calme, juste troublé par nos barbottements dans la superbe piscine. A cela on ajoute la gentillesse de Karen, la propriétaire, toujours à l'écoute et que nous remercions à nouveau pour la qualité de nos échanges. A souligner aussi la propreté irréprochable des lieux, les lits faits à l'arrivée (avec 4 chambres, c'est plus qu'appréciable...), serviettes de bain et de piscine fournies . Sérénité retrouvée !

Cette maison est très calme, avec des extérieurs très agréables (piscine, Ping Pong, terrasses...). Elle est très bien équipée et les propriétaires très attentionnés et réactifs. Cette maison est idéale pour des vacances en famille.

Séjour chez Karen et David

Excellent séjour dans un cadre superbe et tranquille. Accueil dont pourrait s’inspirer bon nombre de français tant par la qualité que par la gentillesse. Équipement complet et parfait et la piscine d’eau salée est un vrai bonheur. Un « détail » non négligeable les sanitaires dans chaque chambre !!
