About this property

A Large Family Luxury Holiday Cottage in North Devon near Dulverton / Exmoor

Anstey Mills Cottage is a Grade II listed building which is the end of the original Devon Longhouse. ‘Visit England’ rewarded it the Quality in Tourism 4 Star Gold in the last year, an accolade the well presented holiday house achieved every year since 2010! Newly refurbished and renovated in 2010, still showing traditional beams and stonework, this large luxury family holiday cottage is a traditional stone, brick and slate building. Being the largest of our two holiday cottages, it is very spacious, ideal for family get-togethers and special celebrations. The entrance hall leads into a large, well-fitted farmhouse kitchen with a huge table to accommodate more guests (great when you combine both cottages!). There are a spacious but cosy sitting room with excellent wood-burning stove and a utility room, WC and shower next to the entrance hall.

You will enjoy the comforts and peace of this home from home: On the first floor we have 3 spacious bedrooms (1 en-suite with 5' 4 poster bed, another with double bed and futon and one twin-bedded room – the beds can be zip linked together to make a super-king size bed) and the main bathroom/WC (bidet and shower over bath). A landing door leads across a small bridge to a large semi-enclosed garden.

Three-bedroom cottage sleeping 6 plus 1 child (plus cots available)
Comfortable 5' Four poster bed
Linen included (bed linen on lovely feather duvets and pillows, towels, tea cloth, etc as well as electric blankets)
Wood-burner
Dog-friendly cottage with separate enclosed 'exercise' area
Well equipped kitchen including dishwasher and washing machine (Tumble-dryer in Barn)
Electricity and central heating (night storage heaters, warm towel rails etc.) included
Ample parking outside your cottage
Free Wifi internet access available (cabled into the cottage with differing signal strength due to our thick walls!)

Very relaxing stay in a country cottage
Having had our original holiday in Devon cancelled at the last minute (by a different company to Home and Away), I was desperate to find a replacement. As we only had 24 hours notice I didn't hold much hope. Thankfully Doris the property manager couldn't of been more helpful and the booking went very smoothly. On arrival we were greeted with freshly cut flowers and a afternoon tea with scones jam and cream. The property itself is an excellent size and accommodated the four of us very easily. The garden and surrounding fields were perfect for our Dog who probably enjoyed the holiday the most, especially having the owners Dog (Ebony) living next door and always ready to play. The cottage was wonderful and provided everything we could wish for. As we stayed during a very wet August week the log burner in the front room was very welcome and I would imagine this property would be comfortable to stay in any time of year, rain or shine. It is well located for most things in North Devon. Saying that, be prepared to drive or cycle everywhere as this property is in the middle of the countryside and there are only small country roads to travel on. If you're not confident driving down (or up very steep) narrow country roads perhaps this property isn't for you but if that's not a problem (which it wasn't for us) it's almost perfect in every way.

I am Doris, German and mother of two, Max and Leo (seen above with me when they took me on a surprise picnic in the woods near the river Barle for my birthday). Tim, my late husband, inherited East Liscombe Farm in the 70ies from his parents and I joined him there in the 80ies. Peu-a-peu did we transform the old Devon Longhouse and adjacent barns into a home for our intended family and two holiday cottages to make up for the lack of farming income as the land was and is tenanted. Our sons Max and Leo came along and enjoyed growing up with the freedom to roam the fields, climb through the hedges etc. Sadly Tim passed away in 2005. His legacy, this beautiful place, keeps us going and both boys are more and more taking an interest to do their bit to help.

Why they chose this property

When I first arrived at East Liscombe the narrow lane and old cob and stone buildings were an impressive experience. Parts of East Liscombe are going back to the middle ages: old beams, some fancy ceiling work and the thick walls of the Devon Longhouse could tell many stories. However, we do not know the history of the farm. At some stage it must have been a wealthy property, as the large two story barn adjacent to the walled yard is enormous and houses an old threshing machine that is built in on the upper floor. The round house at the back explains how this was driven in the old days. From this the age of the barn can be determined as around 1900. One day I hope I find out more.

What makes this property unique

Just waking up in the morning - and many who stay here rave how well they can sleep - to birdsong is a treat. You can see the fields from your bedroom and the sight of pheasants, foxes and even sometimes deer are a distinct possibility. The tenants have mainly sheep and as we are on the bridleway it is not uncommon for riders to come through. But apart from that and the odd rambler, we are undisturbed by the world around us and can enjoy the peace and tranquillity.
Whether you sit in the back garden or make use of the terrace at the end of the Longhouse, you can immerse yourselves in nature. And as the path goes right from your door up to the moor - one leading up to the Two-Moors-Way - you (and your dog) can put in some miles of decent walking and then come home to a lovely wood burner. Relaxation pur!
