About this property
Unique Large Luxury 2 Level Rural Shepherds Hut Cabin. Close to Blackpool Sands.
Come and experience glamping on another level! Oak Tree Lodge is a truly unique find and one that is sure to impress.
Listed as a 'Shepherd's Hut', this luxury lodge is just minutes from the historical naval town of Dartmouth and close to the Start Bay coastline.
It sits in the hamlet of Ash where it enjoys pleasant country views and is equipped to a high standard.
Its cosy and comfortable, sleeping 4 people, it can be rented independently or with Clotted Cream Cottage for those guests with extended groups (please see separate listing).
The space:
The accommodation is on two levels and is ideal for families or couples looking for a peaceful rural retreat close to Dartmouth and the stunning Start Bay coastline.
The living area on the ground floor level includes a small but perfectly formed kitchen which is complete with everything you need to rustle up casual meals including a gas hob, full oven, microwave and fridge. There's pots and pans, crockery, cutlery and glasses too.
Also downstairs is the shower room with sink and WC.
There's a small dining table and a lounge area where the sofa converts into a queen size bed.
The main bed is a king size double and has a privacy curtain and large round feature window. There are two wardrobes, TV and DVD player here too.
Up the spiral staircase is another double bed and a quirky 'Kids Only' den - accessed by a push along wooden car - that's complete with an Xbox and various games. Please note that due to reduced ceiling height, the upstairs bed is a floor mattress.
Outside:
The Shepherd's Hut has its own entrance and separate grounds. Adjacent to the Shepherd's Hut is a chic wooden lodge that is perfect for under cover alfresco dining and as an additional space. This lodge has a full sized dining table, outdoor sofas and a fire globe.
Oak Tree lodge is a separate but neighbouring dwelling from Clotted Cream Cottage. Both properties can be rented independently. A secure fence separates the area where Oak Tree Lodge is located and windows are directed away from the cottage. Separate parties can rent the cottage and the lodge without impacting on either's privacy or enjoyment of the outdoor space. Clotted Cream Cottage is listed separately and can be booked independently, although lends itself to larger parties or those holidaying with extended family as both properties can be booked.
PLEASE NOTE RATES QUOTED ARE FOR OAK TREE LODGE ONLY. If you would like to rent Clotted Cream Cottage as well, please message or search up this property listing.
Other things to note:
We are unable to accept dogs in Oak Tree Lodge without prior approval. We suggest that guests wishing to holiday with their four legged friends book Clotted Cream Cottage.
The property is most suited to families and couples who want to enjoy the peace and tranquility of a countryside setting, in the knowledge that they are only minutes from Dartmouth itself and the beautiful South Hams area.
We do not accept stag or hen parties and ask that all guests are respectful of their surroundings and our neighbours.
Oak Tree Lodge is located close to a working dairy farm and as such, guests can expect farm traffic on the lane outside the property. This is infrequent and most of the time, the only noise you will hear is the mooing of cows and tweeting of birds.
There are wooden floors in the lodge and steps leading to the front door.
The shepherds hut is not like checking into a hotel! Whilst we are on mains water and electricity, our waste goes to a septic tank and gas is supplied by calor gas bottles. If you are looking for a sanitised, hotel-like place to stay, this is probably not for you. Instead you get to stay in a quirky and very comfortable lodge in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK.

About the host
Hosted by Kirsty
Hi, I'm Kirsty and have been hosting guests for many years in our much loved cottages in Devon. I live near Bath but have spent many a childhood summer down in the South Hams area and when I had kids of my own, I couldn't wait to take them there too. No matter how busy or stressful live seems to get, a night or two in the Devon countryside is a perfect reset. Dartmouth and the area surrounding it, is definitely my Happy Place!
I love hosting as it gives me the chance to share the joys of Devon with others.

Why they chose this property
Having spent many childhood summer holidays in and around Torbay and the South Hams area, it holds a very special place in my heart. So much so, that when as an adult I came to look at a run down cottage that was on the market - I couldn't resist! That was 20 years ago and we have enjoyed many long beach days, sunsets and starry nights there since then.
The unique combination of gorgeous beaches and beautiful countryside make this area truly wonderful - no wonder its a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Blackpool Sands - arguably one of the most unique and beautiful beaches in South Devon is just over a mile away, with its crystal clear waters and wonderful vibe, its been pulling visitors from far and wide and yet is never crowded! If you're feeling adventurous, you can walk there from the cottage, take a dip, eat a gorgeous breakfast in the Venus Cafe and burn it off as you head back to the cottage :-).
Further along the coastline, there's Start Bay and Slapton Sands which are dog friendly, and Beesands too.
Walkers are able to access the South West Coast path which runs right past Blackpool Sands or take the car to the National Trust site of Little Dartmouth where you can walk round to Dartmouth Castle, taking in Sugary Cove along the way.
For family fun whatever the weather, Woodlands Theme Park is just a few minutes drive too - offering an action packed day out for kids of all ages.

What makes this property unique
If you think you know what a Shepherd's Hut is, think again... This one of a kind 2 level lodge is more spacious and comfortable than you might imagine. With a fixed double bed area, seating / dining area and a bijou little kitchen, it can be a perfect home from home for a small family.
The spiral staircase leads to the upstairs 'Cool Kids Only' area - complete with a push along wooden car to transport small guests from one end to the other.
If you're expecting sanitised 'hotel-like' conditions, this is not for you, but Oak Tree Lodge has character in abundance and makes the best of the beautiful location, encouraging guests to spend evenings outdoors by the fire and staring at the stars.
