Loon Lodge is a beautiful cottage on Long Lake. It is very private, located at the end of a winding road in the woods, but just fifteen minutes from the bustle of Traverse City. It is perfect for families and couples looking to get away and relax.
The is cottage is directly on Long Lake, one of Northern Michigan's most popular lakes for fishing, swimming and boating. The house has a private dock and a large private deck looking over the water.
Loon Lodge is very secluded; the nearest neighbor is more than one hundred yards away, hidden by the trees. The property has more than 200 feet on the water. Most rental properties are bunched together. Loon Lodge is completely different - it is a private, secluded house in the woods.
The house features two bedrooms and two bathrooms. There are two queen beds and two single beds. The living room is large and spacious, with a cathedral ceiling. The eat-in kitchen is fully equipped. The house has hardwood floors throughout. Outside there is a fire pit and new Weber gas grill.
There is a canoe for your use, along with paddles and life jackets. You can also bring a boat; we provide a mooring and there is a public boat launch across the lake. There are public tennis courts within walking distance. There are also islands in the lake that you can explore, several with lovely beaches.
The area has much to offer, especially in the summer. The house is fifteen minutes from Traverse City, a lively and pretty town with shopping and festivals. Interlochen Music Camp, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, the Platte River, and Michigan's finest wine country are all close by.
We welcome well-behaved pets.
Please note that bookings run Saturday to Saturday in the summer.

Clean cabin, nice amenities, great deck with a fire pit. My only suggestion would be to install grab bars in the showers, which were a bit slippery, especially for older people like me.
Excellent stay in a cozy cabin on the lake. Beautiful location and thoroughly enjoyable. Host provided an extensive list of things to do and see. The cabin is very homey with a vintage feel to it. This pet-friendly cabin was perfect for our dog....she did not want to leave! Oh, and neither did we!
The house was great! So peaceful! Communication with property manager was excellent. Wish the weather could've been a tad warmer, but we were prepared!Great property, great stay!
Charming, retro log cabin in a peaceful wooded setting on beautiful Long Lake. Cabin very clean & spacious. Beautiful views and nice patio overlooking the lake. Loons calling in the morning! We enjoyed a lovely week & took fun excursions to Sutton’s Bay, Leland, Traverse City & Frankfort. Had a couple nice cookouts at the cabin and bonfire on the patio. Our Labrador “Guinness” had the best time of all! Highly recommend!
Spot on! Loved it! Just a great cozy cottage. The drive to get to it was a little scary. But it was so quiet and peaceful! Ty again.iI left candy and granola..I work for a company that makes it! Enjoy
Family had a great time at loon lodge. Very nice cabin and the location was perfect! Would highly recommend to anyone looking to rent lake front property in northern Michigan.
Loon Lodge was a great getaway spot. We very much enjoyed our time at the lake and Loon Lodge provided everything we could need! Tim was always super responsive! Loon Lodge is a place to which we will return!

Terrific. I'm delighted that you had a good visit and hope you can make it back before too long.
A beautiful and relaxing place to stay for our family. The directions provided were easy to follow. The cottage was well stocked with all necessary items.
This is the second year we have stayed at this location. We enjoyed the peace and quite with all the amenities. I think we will come back again next year.
I just spent two wonderful weeks at Loon Lodge with my husband and two children. We loved the privacy of the house while having access to beautiful Long Lake. It felt very remote, yet was easy to get to markets and hiking trails. Sunset every night on the dock was the perfect end to the day.

Thanks for the review! I'm delighted you had a good visit to Loon Lodge and hope you can make it back to Long Lake sometime soon.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Loon Lodge. Really appreciated the guide to the area that the owners gave us prior to our stay. We loved walking our dog around the recreation area that was only a mile away from the cabin. We would definitely come again. Thanks again Tim

I'm delighted to hear you had a good visit and hope you can make it back before long!
The house was very clean. There was a good amount of general supplies; spices, soap, kitchen utensils, which is always an unknown with rentals. It was a good place for our dogs to run around with direct water access.
Thank you!
Exceptional lake front rental. Very private setting on Long Lake, which may be the best Michigan interior lake experience. The water is crystal clear! The cottage is perfect for a couple or even a small family like ours. We hope to get back to Loon Lodge again (and again). The owner always handled any questions we had right away and he provided detailed location directions and a detailed summary of all the activities in the area. Wonderful!

We very much enjoyed our stay at Loon Lodge. Everything met our expectations with the exception of the beds. Unfortunately, they were terribly uncomfortable. Aside from that, thank you for making your little piece of heaven available! Jon & Debbie

Thanks for the feedback! I am happy you had a good visit. I hadn’t previously heard that about the mattresses but we will be getting all new ones for the 2024 season.
We booked the cabin for the week while my daughter was at Interlochen camp and were beyond impressed with the location and charm of the place! It is truly tucked away on a winding path through the woods and the views from the dock are spectacular. It is a traditional cabin feel but fully stocked with all of the cooking utensils and bedding you need. I will say the beds are not the most comfortable, but after the first night we didn't even care! Hiking the grounds, swimming, canoeing, cooking meals and making a fire made for long relaxing days. I was worried that with no A/C the high summer temps would be uncomfortable, but the shade and breeze from the lake made it no issue at all. We'll definitely be back!!

Hi Julie - Great to hear that you enjoyed Loon Lodge! Thanks for the heads-up on the mattresses - we are getting new ones this week! Hope you can make it back before too long. Tim
We were looking for a place to get away and do some wine touring in Michigan. The view, the layout and the quietness sold us on this property. The directions to the house were very helpful in finding the house - big thank you to Tim for that! The house was very welcoming, clean, plenty of kitchen utensils/cookware and the bedrooms & bathrooms were a nice size. The tool closet was great - totally reminding us of something our grandfathers would have. We didn't need to use anything, but it was fun to see what was in there. If we plan another trip to Traverse City, we would stay here again.
We stayed a week at Loon Lodge! The location is very centrally located and was easy for us to get to traverse city and Sleeping Bear dunes. We really enjoyed the deck overlooking the lake and made s’mores every night. The cabin is a bit rustic, but was very clean when we arrived. There is no dishwasher, which I guess is to be expected at a cabin like this. Michigan is very beautiful to explore and this made for a good home base. Don’t forget to check out Moomers. We also enjoyed the little market across the street from Moomers and stocked up on all the cherry products. Don’t miss the cherry salsa and homemade local tortilla chips - SO good!

Thanks for the review! I'm delighted that you had a good visit to Loon Lodge and hope you can make it back before too long.
My husband, son, his girlfriend and our grand dog couldn’t have asked for a more welcoming host and exact cottage of my “youth”! We received both an information packet about the Lodge itself and a separate packet about anything you would need to know about the surrounding area before arrival!
What we loved:
All the windows - even while inside, wonderful views of Long Lake!
The OutDoor Patio - spent almost all of our time there with coffee in the mornings listening and watching the loons or cocktails in the afternoons/evenings watching the sunsets!
Two bathrooms - a must have in my trips!
Sparkling clean cottage upon arrival!!!!
Thank you for sharing your family home, we could tell it is very loved!

I'm delighted you had a good visit to Loon Lodge! The loons are amazing. I hope you can make it back sometime soon.
Enjoy the rest of the summer!
My wife and I came to Traverse city to relax and enjoy some sightseeing. After arriving at Loon Lodge, all that changed. We literally left only once all week. The house itself exudes charm, history and character. Yes, it’s an older home, but still owned by the original family, it is well-maintained and completely clean. We spent our days relaxing on the boat house patio, enjoying warm fires and beautiful views. We brought our boat, and the fishing was excellent as well. Our host Tim was available, responsive and informative, we certainly appreciated his dedication to our comfort. Being pet friendly as well, our 2 pups absolutely loved it. Daily walks through the woods and paths, and occasional jumps in the lake.
My wife and I agree that this was absolutely one of the best vacations we’re ever had. Believe me, we WILL be back.
Very close to the lake with a nice dock. The depth of the water near the dock make it easy to swim. I really liked the layout of the cabin. It has a large living room to gather in. The bathrooms were spacious. It was all clean and tidy. There are a lot of windows which helps to cool the cabin, they really let in a lot of light. We saw and heard many loons. Fishing wasn't very good. We caught small mouth bass, bluegill, large mouth bass, war mouth and perch but fished hard to get them with artificial and live bait. It did turn very warm for June so this may have contributed to our lack of success. The lake islands were fun to explore. The fiberglass canoe has two serious leaks in it from people dragging across the concrete boat house launch area. This makes it unusable. There are about 3 windows that need their crank mechanism fixed. A few days before we were heading out the owner sent us two .pdf files in which we were warned about possible ants and that chipmunks sometimes climb in the walls. We didn't have problems with either but I would have liked to know this earlier in case we wanted to cancel and receive a full refund. There is enough parking for two cars by the cabin but it is a circle driveway so a bit of a challenge to get out of. We ended up figuring out how to park one car and then get around it but there is not a lot of parking...at least not at the cabin. There is remote parking but it requires a walk to the cabin. There is a very nice lookout area which was nice to sit at and eat or just admire the lake. Overall it is a very authentic cabin on the lake and I hope to return in the future. It was a positive experience.

Hi Troy---Thanks for the detailed review! I'm delighted that you had a good visit. Congratulations on the fishing success! You did better than we usually do (I think you are a more talented angler). I didn't know the canoe was having trouble, so we did a repair yesterday and will be replacing it. I like to warn people about the potential for a chipmunk because they show up on rare occasion - that is part of life back in the woods.
Have a great rest of the summer and stay well.

About the host
Hosted by Tim Calkins
My grandparents purchased this land on Long Lake almost 100 years ago, and the property is still owned by the family. We also own the nearby woods, so we are able to protect the area. It is a unique and special retreat.
We rent the property a few weeks each year to help cover the tax bills!
Why they chose this property
My grandmother's family lived in Chicago and would take the train up to Traverse City. They loved the quiet of Long Lake. We do, too.
What makes this property unique
Our home has three very special features.
First, it is right on Long Lake, a spectacular northern Michigan lake. The water is clear and the sunsets are beautiful. Loons nest on the lake, and you can often hear their haunting calls. The lake is great for swimming and boating.
Second, the house is very private. It is situated in the deep woods on a huge lot with lots of lakefront.
Third, the house is near Traverse City, so while it feels like you are really away from it all in the deep Michigan woods, you can get to a store quickly if you run out of flour or want to go to a movie on a rainy day.
