About this property

Lovely Renovated Cottage with Privately Owned Beach

Experience "old Florida" at its best: pristine beach with sugar-white sand, loggerhead turtle nests, dolphins, and exotic birds in your front yard. Walk one-quarter mile on a beautiful boardwalk to the WindMark Beach Village Center. The cottage is recently renovated, with a gourmet kitchen, oversized corner soaking tub, Sony Bravia TV, and fully furnished. You need only bring your clothes! You can fish, walk the beach, or watch the dolphins all from your front yard. Sit under the 90-year-old oak trees (The Grand Dames) that shade the house and watch the woodpeckers, bald eagles, and other exotic birds from the screened front porch. Enjoy the pink-orange sunsets and see the stars as you have never seen them before. Watch the moon set on the bay.

The house has one bedroom (a second room functions as Owner's closet), one full bath, and one powder room. Master bedroom has a queen-size bed and two closets, and features a large, corner soaking tub.The front of the house is a great room, with a dining table for eight, living room seating for six, and designer furniture and accessories.

Kitchen amenities include a Bosch dishwasher, Jennair duel fuel range, and refrigerator with ice maker and exterior water feature.

Australian cypress flooring extends throughout the house. Washer and dryer are in the utility room at the covered carport.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate pets.

Keywords: An Old-Florida-style beach bungalow just steps from beautiful St. Joseph Bay. See shrimp boats and dolphins from the living room window and sunsets that last for hours. Loggerhead turtles nest on the sugar-white sand. Peaceful and exquisite.

Home Away From Home

Love coming back to the cottage and the area. The cottage is always immaculate and the location is perfect for a couples getaway. The beach in front of the cottage is gorgeous and the local dining options are numerous and varied. Always sad to leave and anxious to come back next year.

At the top of our list for stays

Our 2 week stay in March was so vibrant and uplifting after a long, cold Northern winter; we left feeling refreshed and energized! The house is everything as described with a well-equipped kitchen (thanks Mary for the crockpot), laundry facilities, full-screened porch perfect for morning coffee and a book, and a practical room layout. We rented bikes for riding into the Windmark development and stretch of abandoned hwy. 98, but mostly enjoyed the quietness of daily beach walking! A different experience every day! Mexico Beach, Cape San Blas, Port St. Joe and Apalachicola provide plenty of outside diversions. We were thrilled to accidently find a Blues Fest and En Plein Art Experience in Port St. Joe during our stay. Thanks for a lovely vacation house & stay!

Ultimate relaxation

This was our second stay at the cottage and it was just as wonderful as last year. Absolutely love sitting on the screened in porch at sunset. Very quiet and uninhabited, often felt we had the entire beach to ourselves. Cottage has everything needed for meal prep and cooking. Also blessed with wonderfully warm weather.

The house was great

The house was great , everything you could need was provided . Very quite. Didn’t see a handful of people while we walked on the beach . We saw dolphins swimming on our last day there.

Charming FLA Cottage Steps from Beach!

We loved the location of this property just across from Windmark Beach. This house is perfect size for a couple and I loved all the windows and the screened porch to watch all the birds and sunsets. We so enjoyed watching and hearing the owl family in the pines that are beside the house. We did have one issue with the bed which was solved, but otherwise we loved our 2 wk stay.

Cold Temps, but relaxing stay

The weather was cold with 30s at night and 50s most of the 8 days, but the house was a warm zone and when the sun was out we enjoyed some warmth on the side deck. We had a Great Horned owl serenade us nightly and say pelicans, eagles, a variety of shore birds and song birds. Bob and Mary were always available for any issues like a slow draining bathtub. This was our 2nd visit and we were pleased to see the recovery from Hurricane Michael. A great location and nice cottage for two people to relax.

Perfect getaway

This lovely cottage style home was thoughtfully renovated as described, and absolutely sparkling clean and neat. Kitchen was well equipped. Extra touches (beach equipment available, extra towels, books, games) were just right. Beach access was amazing, literally a few steps across the street, with a bench on the beach where we enjoyed sunset cocktails every evening. Or you could enjoy the view directly from the front porch. If you need supplies or want to eat out, many options are locally available and a helpful, detailed guide was provided by the hosts. Our January/February stay meant only walking on the beach, not swimming, but a beautiful quiet time to be there. Thank you for a great stay!

Relaxation at it’s best

Was everything we were expecting and then some. The quiet location was enhanced by the views of the Gulf, the ease of getting to the beach and the comfortable surroundings of the cottage. It was easy to make meals. We didn’t use the corner tub. It would have been nice to have a chair in the bedroom for easier dressing. We would love to return in the future. The owls hooting outside were a added bonus!

Peace & Tranquility

This amazing bungalow allowed us the perfect spot to unwind and de-stress from a crazy 2021! The house itself permeates a zen-like atmosphere which provides an uplifting and delightful experience! The kitchen was extremely well equipped, the front porch was the perfect place for morning coffee, the soaker tub was an amazing treat, and the queen-size bed was quite comfy. Although we didn't have time to try out the kayak, we did make a point to spend time on the sugar sandy beach nightly to watch those mesmerizing sunsets!!! Kevin and I will most certainly be back to this peaceful pearl of Port St. Joe.

Relaxing

We will definitely be coming back to this place! the cottage was just perfect for our needs. it was a great place to relax. Very comfortable, great location if you are looking for a place to get away. very isolated and quiet and well furnished with everything you need. the only negative - all of the windows in the cottage were very dirty which took away from the view and made the place seem a little shabby. But overall, it is a excellent place to spend a few nights and relax.

Peaceful and very quiet! FOUND A GEM!

Love the small town at Port St Joe! Not much traffic, good food and restaurants are just a few miles away and fishing was great 👍👍. Our place is right across from the beach, located in a very peaceful and quiet neighborhood. We got a couple of nights view of the sunset right at the patio. Although our trip was cut short due to the weather and redtide, overall we enjoyed our stay. Also, was surprised to get a refund for leaving a day early. Thank you again for letting us stay.

Relaxing long weekend

The cottage is just as pictured in the listing. We love the location (this was our third stay in this particular area). It is located in the Windmark beach area, it’s quite, secluded and very peaceful. The cottage was very clean and comfortable. The walk to the beach is directly across from the house and easy to access. It was very nice sitting on the screened in porch in the morning having breakfast and watching the ocean. The location is convenient to Mexico Beach and Port St. Joe for dinner and shopping. We look forward to another stay soon.

Peaceful and Quiet

Despite the biting flies (thankfully not every day), the red tide, and the dead fish we had a pleasant stay. The weather was perfect and the sunsets were the most spectacular I have ever witnessed. Some of them were truly spiritual moments. The front porch is the perfect place to start the day with a morning cup of Joe. Love the isolation and quietness of the area.

Great Vacation

The Cottage is great; the location, the neighborhood, the view of the water and the sunsets are all perfect. The chairs and umbrellas were nice for relaxing on the beach. Walks along the beach in the morning and late afternoon were wonderful. Screened in porch is so enjoyable. Can't wait to return. Bob and Mary are the BEST!

Perfect Beach Cottage

This cottage was perfect for myself and my husband to celebrate our 10th anniversary! Everything we needed to enjoy a peaceful beach getaway! The views from the porch are great. The cottage itself is cozy and we felt right at home. We had the privilege of seeing our very first sea turtles! We saw dolphins, crabs and I even found some sea urchins to photograph. If you want a serene, private beach experience you cannot go wrong with this place❤️

Third stay because we love Alsobrook!

This was our third stay for our BFF trip. Best location! Peaceful and centrally located property on a QUIET street near Windmark! Friendly neighbor/family sharing boardwalk with only them right in front of the house to beautiful St. Joe Bay. We love exploring in the kayak on the days mother nature cooperates with the winds and see something new every trip. We appreciate Mary and Bob for letting us borrow their kayak and gear, beach chairs and towels, etc. Great location for walks and biking...lots of paths in Windmark and you can even go on old 98 for a few miles (approx.) which is closed to traffic. Take a walk down that street at night and check out the stars. Screened in porch has beautiful view of water and sunset if you don't feel like venturing out. Loved listening to the frogs at night...got some rain and they put on a concert! I could go on and on...we are so lucky to have found this wonderful place. Lots of memories! We will be back! Thank you Mary and Bob!

About the host

Your host

Host profile image
Mary and Bob Herdegen have family in the area and have been vacationing in nearby Mexico Beach for over 25 years. While this property is new to them, they purchased it from a family who had it in their family since 1938. The new owners hope to honor and maintain the tradition established the family and provide the same wonderful experience for their guests as did the previous owner.

Why they chose this property

When people visit Port St. Joe, they seem to leave a part of their heart is, quite simply, a very special part of the world. Maybe it is the authenticity of the town. Maybe the Southern hospitality. Maybe the amazing shrimp, oysters, and fresh-caught fish. The historic Cape San Blas Lighthouse was "rescued" from imminent loss along the Gulf and now stands proud and protected in the City limits along St. Joe Bay. A full-moon climb will never be forgotten.

What makes this property unique

Some favorite things to do are to walk the beach, which takes an entirely different feel at different times of the day. At night, take a flashlight on the beach and see thousands or thousands of "ghost" crabs scurrying around the sand; it looks like a far-away planet! Sit on the porch and watch the dolphins swim by. The seafood is amazing, and you can buy shrimp and oysters that were taken out of the water the night before. If you think you do not like oysters, you have never tried an Apalachicola oyster! Sleep with the windows open to hear the din of insect noises and to watch the fireflies from the bedroom window. The board walk to WindMark Beach Village Center is beautifully landscaped, and the Village Center has some amenities worth exploring. If you are inclined to pursue other outdoor adventures, less than 30 minutes away you can enjoy Off the Map Expeditions kayak tour of the Dead Lakes in Wewahitchka and the Estuary Tour of the Apalachicola River. Both are a must-see!
