About the host
Hosted by Wendy Smith
Living on our family property in Blanco, just west of here, we truly enjoy making the drive over to ensure our little piece of heaven on earth is ready for your stay. We’ve always called the Texas Hill Country home, where wide-open spaces, abundant wildlife, and small-town charm make life special—much like Leakey. We love spending time outdoors, watching the deer, hummingbirds, and purple martins, gathering with family and friends, and appreciating the simple joys of country life. Hosting gives us the opportunity to share a little of this peaceful lifestyle with others. There’s nothing more rewarding than creating a warm, comfortable place where guests can relax, make lasting memories, and experience the natural beauty and genuine hospitality of our area.
Why they chose this property
As a newlywed couple looking to grow in the coaching profession, my husband accepted a position with Leakey Independent School District as head basketball coach and science teacher. The small Class A school immediately felt like home, and the community warmly welcomed the new teacher and coach in town. Housing was limited at the time, but through a wonderful connection with a sweet, retired teacher who owned this beautiful ranch just a few miles outside of Leakey, we were able to purchase three acres of this gorgeous, secluded property. It was there that we built what is now Ash Creek Hideaway. For several years, we were the only full-time residents along this four-mile country road and loved caring for and watching over the surrounding properties. Although life eventually led us closer to our aging families, Ash Creek Canyon has always held a special place in our hearts, and we continue to treasure the peace and beauty found here.
What makes this property unique
What makes our property truly special is the peaceful beauty that surrounds you in every direction. From every window and across all three acres, you’ll enjoy relaxing country views and the quiet charm of the Texas Hill Country. The front porch is lined with comfortable chairs and rocking chairs—the perfect place to sip your morning coffee, unwind in the evening, or simply take in the scenery. A fenced yard provides a safe space for children and outdoor pets to play while you relax.
Inside, the cozy fireplace creates the perfect atmosphere for quiet evenings, while outside, the fire pit offers a wonderful place to gather under the stars. If you enjoy cooking outdoors, you’ll find a barrel BBQ pit, an additional grill, and three picnic tables ready for family meals and gatherings. For a little fun, guests can enjoy ping-pong, cornhole, horseshoes, and washer pitching.
Nature lovers especially appreciate the wildlife that often visits the property—deer, squirrels, armadillos, bluebirds, butterflies, and depending on the season, purple martins and hummingbirds. It’s the perfect blend of comfort, outdoor fun, and the natural beauty that makes this little getaway so memorable.
