About this property

Large 100-year-old family cottage, claw-foot bathtub & lots of deck and porch!

LaMotte Cottage has been in the LaMotte family since 1939. Originally built in 1917, it is now over 100 years old, with the history and charm that only comes with a century of good memories being created there. The front porch is great for watching the hummingbirds, and the large side deck can easily accommodate a pretty large group of friends. Nestled in the rhododendrons, and therefore shady and cool in the summer, the house is heated with a wood stove and small space heaters, should you need them. In the summer, it is cooled — quite effectively — by open windows, electric fans and shady trees. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower. One bedroom has a double bed, the second has a double and a single, and the third has two singles. Downstairs, the living room/dining room, kitchen, porch, deck, one bedroom, and one bathroom with the original claw foot bathtub (deep and luxurious, in an old school, really old school, way!). The kitchen is well-outfitted, with oven, stove, microwave, drip coffeemaker, etc. LaMotte Cottage is the kind of place that invites long evenings of good conversation, jigsaw puzzles, and a glass of wine. It also has cable TV and high-speed WiFi. Montreat offers beautiful hiking trails, a lake, gift shops, and snack bar. In the summer canoes and paddle boats can be rented and there is a free community barn dance with live music on Friday nights! Flat Creek, just across the road, has a lovely walking path beside it and is easily accessible for a pleasant walk, rock hopping, or place to cool your watermelons on a warm day! A lifelong family destination for our family's summer vacations, it has shown up in poems, songs, paintings, and many, many stories. We hope you will enjoy creating a few of your own here and will return often.

Lovely spot in a special place!
We enjoyed our stay in this house! I went to Montreal as a child, and was glad to see that not a whole lot has changed, and my kids had a great time visiting as well! We were not completely aware of the lack of central heating until we arrived, that was partly our own fault. I am sure, but the host was very responsive and helped us with our issues.

Fall Getaway
Gracious host provided so many amenities down to the cinnamon shaker in the kitchen pantry! Even though the weather turned damp and chilly we were snug and cozy thanks to the dry firewood already inside and the numerous space heaters throughout. Perfect respite for us! Hope to return for a longer stay soon!

Quintessential Montreat cottage
In the rhododendron valley that is a beloved mountain retreat. You can hear the mountain stream out the open windows. Excellent location to walk & explore from, as well as pop into Black Mountain for treats. Was the house full of irregular angles, steep stairs, lumpy mattresses, charm, one of a kind self-published historíes, family memories, board games, & dry firewood!? Of course it was, it’s a Montreat cottage! Nothing modern about it. Highly recommend!

Cozy Retreat
Nice older home. Stayed pretty cool even with high temps in Montreat. We brought a couple of our own large fans to provide better air circulation, it really helped!

Montreat Cottage is owned by John and Olivia LaMotte of Swannanoa, NC. Son David and his wife Deanna LaMotte of Black Mountain help with the listing but the house is professionally managed by a small, local, family-owned management company - Black Bear Rentals. The owners of Black Bear are long-time friends of the LaMottes and know Montreat well having spent their own summers there for years! We all love hospitality and look forward to welcoming you to the mountains.

Why they chose this property

It's a magical spot that welcomes you home the first time you visit. Relaxing and quiet, with the sound of the crickets and the stream across the street drifting through the windows at night, this is the kind of place that lends itself to deep relaxation, whether after a busy day of mountain adventures or a quiet day of jigsaw puzzles and conversation.

What makes this property unique

The covered front porch is perfect for a drizzly day, while the side deck is perfect to take more inviting weather. The wood stove couldn't be more warm and cozy, and you can simply feel the history in the place. It's' not often these days you can stay in a period property and step back in time and yet have modern amenities and wifi!
