We enjoyed hosting Teresa and her family. I think the kids had a blast outside with the Tower of Power and the swings. Thanks to the family for leaving the place in such good shape--we are fortunate in our guests, and we love sharing our home and elk meadow. Come stay with us again! Trice

We so enjoyed hosting this family--parents, kids and mates, and two grandkids--all delightful! They reported the arrival of groups of 30 elk arriving in the meadow, lots of deer and, of course, the hummingbirds. I'm grateful for their help keeping the feeders full, and for the cleaning up the the house and grounds. We hope they come back for another visit to our meadow! Trice

Great Place

This rental served as a great “home base” for our Thanksgiving weekend activities. It’s convenient yet very private, plenty of space to spread out, and gorgeous views! The owners and caretaker were helpful and very responsive. A great laid back mountain getaway.

We were so glad we could host Ange and her family while they were visiting for the Thanksgiving holiday. They were wonderful, considerate guests. People like this make hosting a real joy! We can offer our guests a great rental property up here in the rural mountain area where we just don't have commercial rental opportunities for visitors.

We so enjoyed hosting this couple who were in Bailey for a family wedding. They didn't get to stay long and spent most of their time with the wedding activities, but they said they enjoyed relaxing in the cool mountain air. They left the house in pristine shape, which always feels good to a host! Thank you!!

Amazing view of mountains and wild life, including a herd of elk. Very friendly owners. Great house. Lots of fun having game nights while kids watched Disney movies.

We so enjoyed hosting the McDaniels family. The came to our valley to close down their father's home nearby, but they used their Colorado time to visit lots of area attractions between work days at the house. Little cousins enjoyed the VHD Disney tapes, a daughter and her newborn baby could relax in the quiet of the downstairs bedroom, the kitchen provided breakfasts for all at the start of each day. When they checked out, the MacDaniels left the place all cleaned up and organized, so thoughtful! We hope this Michigan family can come back and stay with us again soon!

Peaceful Getaway but Close to Major Cities & Attractions

If you are looking for a place to stay away from the 'tourist' strips of hotels and motels, Elk Meadow is the place to be! The home offers all the niceties of being in your own home (3 bedrooms, two bathrooms, full kitchen, TV and internet if needed but highly recommend you put down the electronics and soak in the sights, sounds and smells). You are a short 1 - 1 1/2 hour drive to Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs with so much to see and do on the way. Also a closet full of games and puzzles to have a family game night and catch up with the kiddos. The meadow behind the house provides the opportunity to see wildlife such as elk, deer, and lots of birds to check out (look up Stellar's Jay!) Owners Lou and Trice were available and very responsive when we had questions about local Bailey restaurants and shops. There are two outside cats, Rutherford and Molly. Rutherford is a little sweetie and may come by to say hello once or twice each day. We only saw Molly once as she is a little shy. Also two hummingbird feeders on the porch which also provide entertainment watching each bird jockey for a position. Check in and check out is easy. If you are looking for a beautiful and peaceful 'home away from home', Elk Meadow is the place to be!

Totally wonderful!

I came for a week long personal retreat, but I would be delighted to come back with my wife or friends. The house and setting rae lovely. Looks out of the most beautiful mountain valley going for miles in both directions. Plenty of privacy, but not far from town if you need it. Trice, the hostess, couldn't be more helpful. She did everything imagiable to make my stay perfect, including bringing me lots of newspaper clippings descriing all the best hikes in the area. Highly recommended!

Main fan in great room didn't work

Was offered one over the door hangar to hang our months worth of clothes on. Had to wait a couple of hours for occupancy.

Wow, I've never received a poor review before, it's really shocking! My caretaker told me my guests had a wonderful time with extended family, lots of adventures, going out every day. Our home is at 8500 ft , we have no air conditioning since opening widows works great. One of the two large ceiling fans in the great room was inoperable at high speeds--our window washer had bashed it with a ladder. But there is a second ceiling fan, plus a portable fan. Our home has two additional full closets for our guests clothes plus three dressers. Perhaps they did not notice these extra spaces for their clothing. I did apologize for running late at check-in. The guests seemed so accommodating, and I wanted everything to be ready for their extended stay. I also spent an hour orienting them to our home. Our caretaker said the guests were friendly and she had a nice time with the grandkids. This poor review is quite a surprise to both of us. So I'm hoping there were parts of the stay that pleased our guests. I know the elk and deer paid some visits! I will take this review to heart and work to improve the Gonznagel Guesthouse. Thanks.

Amazing view, beautiful house, very kind host

We loved our stay! The hosts were so incredibly welcoming and friendly, communicative, and I cannot thank them enough. There are wonderful views all around the home, and plenty of wildlife. Hummingbirds, elk, and all kinds of songbirds. The home was clean, comfortable, and we truly enjoyed our stay. Bailey is a very cute town, and though at first we were a little worried that we’d be in too small a town, we found that wasn’t the case at all. There were places to shop, great restaurants, and a friendly community. It was only half an hour to Red Rocks Amphitheater, and about an hour from Denver, and in that hour we found plenty to see and do and it was not a hassle at all. I can’t recommend this home enough. We’ll be back next year!

Thank you Christa for the kind words. We so enjoyed hosting your group--what a great way to start the season, with wonderful guests! We're glad you discovered Bailey! It is a cute, original mountain town. Last night about 90 cow elk came bounding out into our meadow, literally frolicking, some with their just-born calves in tow. These cow elk were so elated to be finished with birthing, ready to graze and play with their babies! I wish you could have been here to video this rare display. Thanks for allowing me to use some of the pictures you took--they will spice up my vrbo site! And we so appreciated that you left the place all cleaned up--you are the best guests, come back anytime!

Loved it. Beautiful property with great views. Plenty of wildlife to take pictures of!

I was in a hurry to find a place to stay for a wedding on the weekend. Trice got back to me immediately and had great communication throughout. Checking in and out was extremely smooth. I would highly recommend others to stay here because the location is far enough from the highway so you don’t hear any of the traffic and the drive accessible to cars as well. 6 of us slept comfortable and there was room for more if we used all the couches. They had spots outside for bonfires but we just didn’t stay long enough to use them. The record collection they have set up with the surround sound was amazing. I will be coming back to this property!

Glad you could spend some time enjoying our elk, and sampling our classic record collection! Come back when you can stay longer!! Cozying up to the outside fire pits is an amazing way to enjoy the evening sky, even now in the fall, when the weather turns cool!

We had a wonderful time in this lovely home, it was everything and more we excepted from the pictures and the description. Trice made sure we knew where everything was and gave the perfect welcoming tour! If we had a questions she had the answers. Her knowledge of the area was great and helped us out. The home is warm and inviting and we are hoping to get back next year. The grounds keeper Janet was nice and helpful and you didn't even know she was there till you needed her. We also enjoyed hosting you! And sharing in your exciting river trip adventures! This group was so friendly, left the property perfectly cleaned up, had a small fire outside--responsibly--and basically enjoyed the grounds, the kitties, our beautiful meadow. They saw lots of deer and other wildlife, but the elk were elsewhere. Wouldn't. you know it, Mary, this morning at dawn I hear a bull bellow, and there were forty elk grazing out behind the house! Hope you see them when you come back--we'd love to see you again! Trice

Beautiful location!

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Trice’s home. Lucky to see the elk heard 2 nights. Cries from the coyote pack were cool. A distant moose sprinting to the creek for a drink. Appreciated the binoculars! Hiked most days with a 20-35 min drive to trail heads. Nice abundance of puzzles, books, games with super starlink system which allowed my son to work efficiently. Kitchen was well equip, plenty of paper products and although we brought our seasonings and oil, there was salt, pepper and olive oil available. Although we were skeptical about the waterbed, we found it very comfortable and supportive. Quiet neighborhood. The owner bedroom felt awkward to have no window coverings given the caretaker house was overlooking the bedroom and the deck walkway was right out the windows. Water was nice and cold and got nice and hot, perfect! Loved our stay!!

Glad you had a good time here with your family, Barbara. And thanks for leaving the place in such good shape. We've never installed window coverings on the Master since the way it faces, you can't really see in--the windows on the downhill side of the caretaker's studio are not used. so there is no one to look into the Master windows. I could have assured you of that--I'll add it to the "Tour". I hope you can come back and stay with us again sometime!

A Must Stay

From the moment I booked the stay, Trice has been wonderful! Sending photos, directions, attractions and lists of activities to do around the home. All centered around the ages of people in our family. So very thoughtful! Now, about the home, this is the cabin you wish you had in the family. Nestled into the valley of beautiful, scenic and tranquil mountains. What TV?? Ya, you won't want to use it when you stay here! The windows have the best picture! The wrap around porch is where we parked while enjoying our time at the house. All the amenities you would want and have in your own home. We lacked nothing. All in all, 10 out of 10! We will only stay here when we make our next trip out. Thanks to Trice and how we were made to feel like family, plus the beauty of the home and surroundings, we will be back! Thank you so much for making our stay so enjoyable! You are the best.

Breathtaking views and secluded property

We loved the secluded mountain views and property. The area was breathtaking. The children’s play area and meadow provided endless possibilities to explore. We loved being able to roam and take in the mountain air and sunshine. My kids and I went on many walks and spent time exploring the creek. The deck was delightful and we enjoyed eating lunch there and watching/listening to the elk. The house is eclectic and cozy. It felt like a “home” and was well stocked. The dinning table, two bar seats, and couches provided ample room to cook, eat, and enjoy each others company. The couches were very comfortable. We enjoyed the shelves of children’s books, the movies, and the pianos. We also played many of the board games provided and found it fun to play some we don’t own at home. The one downside to the property was the beds. Our family prefers traditional mattresses to the floatation (water) bed in the master and air mattress in the basement. We would love to return to enjoy all the beauty Bailey has to offer. This is a beautiful spot to rest and relax.

We enjoyed Chrys and family, they were the most considerate of guests! So glad they enjoyed the property and all it has to offer. About the beds--the flotation bed in the Master Suite is a feature, but the mattress on the air bed in the basement is a accommodation for the fact that our new Murphy bed arrived in several different shipments, one box in pieces. So, though we had already sold the futon/bunk bed from that bedroom, we were unable to install the Murphy Bed before these last guests. We placed the new Murphy mattress on an air mattress to suffice for their visit. So we will install the Murphy Bed this fall and feature it in the photos on our site. Thanks for your forbearance, Chrys, and so glad you came. Hope you come back to see us! Trice

Great place for a large family or a couples peaceful getaway!

Where to begin! Trice and Lou greeted us and showed us where everything was and what was off limits. They are super people (we only met Lou the one time as he went on his way to fish)! Trice was absolutely wonderful to work with, we hit it off immediately! The property is absolutely gorgeous and the house was perfect for our needs! Trice would text to let us know when she would be around as she was very busy fighting the rain to get her beautiful flowers in! The views (even with the rainy days) were spectacular. The area is so peaceful. We saw some beautiful double rainbows! The elk and deer were around everyday! We even enjoyed Bailey days and we all had a ball! The decor of the house was wonderful and very welcoming-plants-art work and so much more! The kitchen is good sized and has everything you need to cook for many people. The game closet fully loaded and we used it everyday! We loved every minute of our stay and would definitely do it again! Trice and Lou you are the best! Bob & Peg

Beautiful home with amazing views!

There probably isn't enough room here to write everything I'd like to say but I'll try! We arrived just before 11p.m. Friday July 15th, 2022 after making the long 20+ hr drive (supposed to be 14 not including stops) from So Cal (Victorville, Hesperia, The High Desert) with my mom and daughter who's 8 yrs old to see her brother, my son, for his 14th birthday. Trice was helpful from the very beginning of our trip. She sent us directions and even gave me a list of things to do! The house is gorgeous. Filled with so many different works of art! There are tons of neat things to look at all around the home including many gorgeous plants and some neat little fish! My kids and I loved looking around. We'd find something new everyday! The house was super clean and the view is just amazing. I wish I had a better word to describe it as there really aren't any to describe the beauty. The beds were comfortable and my kids happened to love the waterbed, haha. Bathrooms are nice and clean and the giant tub and shower in the master was soooo nice! No curtains did not bother us one bit. You can see some homes in the distance but no one close enough to actually see in the windows at all. The closest home was the property caretaker. She was so sweet the few times we saw her. We wouldn't even know she was there if we hadn't seen her! She takes care of the yard, plants, fish and cats. The cats were sweet although there was one, Molly, who was pretty elusive. The other, Rutherford, was around all the time and just wanted some pets! They were pretty clean for being outdoors, too! We enjoyed them everyday 🐈‍⬛️🐈 There are plenty of books and dvds and disney vhs movies for the kids. Everything was just flat out amazing and fun and beautiful!! We saw deer, elk and tons of hummingbirds and 2 blue birds in the tree right out the window. Trice was extremely helpful throuout our trip. Things went a little off course and she was there to make helpful suggestions and make sure we were all doing well! The home was equipped with everything we needed as well tons of first aid supplies. There is a little play area for kids outside with a few swings and a slide my kids loved. We also enjoyed the little garden areas. Lots of pretty flowers around the house. Trice makes everything so easy including check-in/check-out (treat as it were your own home, gather all the trash and leave beds unmaid and used towels in spot on floor.) This is now our go-to if we're ever in the area again!

We so enjoyed Bre and her family. Her grandmother was the first to arrive, alone, 89 years old, driving from Nebraska. We had a great visit, she brought a bottle of wine to share--while we waited for Bre who was held up by possibly bad GoggleMap directions. The family settled in, though they had some ill health. They got so see Bre's son and celebrate his birthday. This family enjoyed the heck out of the property and left everything in pristine condition--could hardly tell they were there for five days. I hope they come back to visit, they were a joy!

Twilight Zone: Mountain Edition 10/10 WOULD NOT RECOMMEND

Arrived at the house at 4 pm. She let us know “per my arrangements” the place wasn’t ready til 7. I never made arrangements for that. Upon returning, she chats for almost an hour. There is a caretaker house about 60 feet from the master bedroom windows, none of which have curtains. Not a single curtain in the house. The caretaker will be letting herself in to water the plants and take care of the cats, which reside all over the deck of the house. Don’t let them inside though, house rules. They were dirty and rubbed against our legs every time we walked in the house. One did get in, we had to catch him and remove him. The house is so full of things. There’s isn’t an inch of space anywhere. Cluttered with collections and plants, magazines, decorations. Owner occupied doesn’t even begin to describe it. There were no cabinets or drawers cleared for our things. Her bath products still on the edge of the tubs—7 people for 5 days, in a house with no space already, living in suitcases on the floor. The decorations in the house are extremely eccentric. Voodoo, Gypsy like artifacts, crystals in the windows, bones littered though the yard. Weird dolls and pictures on the walls. So off-putting that 2 adults and 3 kids in our party slept locked in the same room. This owner was pushy and would not let us be. She stayed way too long at arrival. Continued to call and message. If her text wasn’t answered promptly, she called. Then text other members in our party. (She told us she was leaving out of town, yet she never seemed to leave. Day 2 she called and forgot something in the house. Wanted to come back and let herself in to get coffee. That wasn’t enough. She wanted to know when we would be there, so she could come talk to us more. She didn’t see enough of our things and demanded to know where we were and what we were doing. We had spent the morning looking for paper towels and discussing no storage in the house. While back, she decided to get us paper towels, as well as go into the master bedroom and clean out one of her cabinets. She said the coffee was in the basement. Not sure if the caretaker heard us through the windows or they have cameras, but that was enough. No privacy, the house was horrid, and she would not stop harassing us with her “helpful tips” Like the start of a horror film just before you never see the family again. We left less than 24 hours after arrival. None of us felt safe or comfortable.

Wow, I feel badly that this was our guest's experience. We were obviously a mismatch. Following is a lengthy response to a lengthy critical review which totally misrepresents our property: I can only say that it is necessary to carefully preview a property site--if you have special needs--to understand the lodging you have reserved. The property is as advertised, actually a little better with some new furnishings and appliances. Yes, the house is owner-occupied, most of the decor is made up of artifacts from travels and adventures around the world. We share our environment with our guests; so far all have found it very interesting and aesthetic. This guest contacted me on the VRBO site and said they would arrive after dinner, around 7 pm. So my husband and I rearranged our day to accommodate her timing. I emailed her three times on the VRBO site, asking for timing confirmation and the ages of her three children--she did not reply. I prefer to know kids' ages and activity levels so I know if I have to secure some of our art objects. After zero communication, this guest texted after 9 am on her check-in day that she would arrive at 4 pm instead of 7. I texted back that she should arrive at 7 pm as she had previously arranged and sent her some dining suggestions. The family still arrived at 4 (the guest stated she was a busy woman and didn't have time to read my emails/texts), we were still preparing the property and invited them to come back at 7. They reappeared at 8:30 pm and I began the walk-through, but the guest walked off and I finished the tour with her employee--who I originally thought was her daughter. This young woman said the group had no vacation plans, which is why I offered to meet up with them again to share ideas. The next morning we were on our way to SE Colorado for our son's wedding and realized we had forgotten the special Cuban coffee required at this event. I called the guest (they were out to breakfast) and asked if we could return to get the coffee. She said OK (if she'd said no, I would not have entered the property), but when we got to the house, we found ALL the lights and fans in the house turned on?? I realized I had forgotten to empty the things stored in the 'guest dresser' in the Master bedroom, so I quickly did that. We drove to Conifer to get some more paper towels--I had told her we would return to the house with PT and share some vacationing ideas if she was back. When we returned, we found the house empty--no note, no text. We had no idea what happened to our guests. Since they were from the plains, and her children had some disabilities, we thought they might have had a problem with the altitude. I tried texting and calling, but got no response from the guest. I had also got the phone number of her employee (since the guest was a busy woman and didn't have time to communicate), so I texted her, trying to find out what happened. We left and I told the caretaker to to keep an eye out for them, to text me if they returned. Finally I got a text from the guest expressing her dissatisfaction, stating she was planning to ask for a full refund from VRBO. My position is: the property is well-represented on the website. Reading any of the past five-star reviews would have indicated the house has artistic decorations. As to her specific complaints: the 'weird doll' she referred to was a Kachina purchased by my parents in the 1970s, a museum artifact of some value. A porcelain doll with a violin was displayed on a high shelf? Several of the paintings are from a famous Cuban artist. Other reprints, Salvador Dali, Monet, and original paintings by local artists and my son adorn the walls. Most guests are curious and ask about the artists. And who can't appreciate crystals refracting light hanging in the windows? The 'bones' were collected in the elk meadow last summer--cattle bones from the 1920-30s--by one of our young guests. They had been arranged artistically at one point. The personal bath products were actually products for our guests to use--she didn't hear that part of the tour. I really didn't get to finish the tour as the guest was in a rush to get moved in--which is understandable, she had kids to settle. But when I left, one young boy was playing with our cat Rutherford and enjoying working out on the elliptical. The group seemed fine. Our cats are not dirty--they roll in the driveway gravel to cool off, as any cat would. They are necessary to protect the gardens from rodents, and as this was our first rental of the season, they wanted to come inside as was their custom. The caretaker manages the cats completely, and is very discreet, arranges when she can enter the house to do houseplants and check the fish, is in charge of fire-making, and waters yard pots daily--choosing times when she won't disturb the family. She had not yet met these houseguests and was shocked they just packed up and left. I cannot address the guest's fear for her safety, her sense I wanted to 'see her things'--trust me, I don't! She would do better in an unoccupied, cleared-out condo. She shouldn't rent an owner-occupied VRBO put on the market to "share"! This guest chose to leave the property and not enjoy her entire rental time. I wrote her on the VRBO site that she was welcome to return and finish her stay. But her money would not be refunded, as per her contract. She tied up my property, disabled the in-garden fountain, filled four wastebaskets with dirty diapers and the elliptical with cracker crumbs--all in under 24 hours. It may be best they did not continue their vacation with us, as they were so uncomfortable and managed to do quite a bit to the property in just their short stay. I always try to improve my guests' experiences. From this stay I have learned to always have my property prepared by 4 pm. no matter what prior arrangements are made for a late check-in. I will also arrange extra clothes-hanging space in the Master. The other two bedrooms have empty dressers and closet space. The kitchen has an empty cabinet, but the guest did not see it (or the under-counter paper towel rack) because she left the tour as we entered the kitchen. As for window coverings and safety--there is nobody around, we are in a rural setting. Our caretaker's house faces away from ours, and she keeps watch for security reasons. The garden-level bedroom is fully fitted with wooden blinds for those who want to sleep without views of the stars. I am sorry that my attempts to offer vacation suggestions were seen as intrusive and pushy. We always hope to give our guests the best possible vacation experience--I guess this arrangement was a mismatch from the start. Better communication at the outset might have prevented the misunderstandings.

Not what we were expecting

It wasn't a terrible stay, however, I was under the impression that this property was not owner occupied. Some of the cabinets, closets, drawers were inaccessible being marked as the owner's property. Many personal items were about, many fragile. Personal toiletries in the bathrooms. Many fragile houseplants and the fish tank were worrisome. The advertised king size bed was a water bed necessitating our relocation to the walkout basement to sleep on the queen size bed. To be fair, I didn't communicate these issues to the home owner, except for the waterbed. I made this reservation in good faith that this property would be somewhat similar and as described as the many other VRBO properties we've rented. I can only blame myself for not doing an adequate vetting of this property. Even so, it was a nice home, clean and well taken care of. The location was further south of our daily destinations than anticipated so that became an issue and as such, realized that we won't be renting this far south again. The Host was wonderful and very accommodating.

Thanks Amy, we enjoyed hosting you and your husband--you were lovely guests. And I'm glad the bull elk arrived the last few days to do some bugling in the meadow, signaling the start of fall rut. Not everyone likes the flotation bed, but many of our guests have loved it. Sorry it didn't work out for you. All the accommodations, the owner-occupied status, the plants, fish and artwork were all mentioned in the description section of my site. But I know I don't always "read deep" either when I rent a property. We share our household items with our guests, and I don't worry about breakage (although I do put some stuff up when small children visit). Our things are displayed for our guests to enjoy. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, got to see the beginnings of our fall colors, and could spend some time with your family. Good luck with your next Colorado stay, Trice

Stayed four days for a wedding.

The setting was beautiful. We saw elk in the evenings and a fox in the mornings. The owners could not have been nicer. A caretaker was available incase we needed anything, but we never had to contact her. The house was stocked with everything we needed. They even left us a bottle of champagne. I would love to stay there again.

We designed and built this home in 1992 as a luxury vacation home for our Floridian parents. (Lou is a General Contractor) We took possession in 1995 with our two children who were born and raised in this mountain environment. They've launched and now we travel for business and pleasure. We'd like to share our home with you, as it is. We still reside here, so you will not find the house stripped bare of personal belongings. We are never gone for long, so we check back in to attend to landscaping and upkeep between reservations. We want to share our music, art, books, environs with you--think of staying in your Aunt Sally's place while she heads off to Tortuga for an educational adventure!! We hope you enjoy our slice of the Paradise Pie!!

Why they chose this property

When designing this house, we considered the meadow, the view up the valley and the prevailing winds and sunshine. The windows are oriented to the views, the solar system and in-floor heat maintain a comfortable inside atmosphere in all seasons. We have lived in the Bailey area over 50 years and are well-acquainted with all the wonders and recreational opportunities of the region. Just ask us for adventure ideas!

What makes this property unique

To be so close to an easy access highway, yet in such a peaceful valley! You feel remote, yet you are only an hour away from all the entertainment and activities of the Denver area--major league football, baseball, basketball, hockey; movie theaters and fine dining; Broadway shows and plays at the Denver Center of the Performing Arts, a zoo, an aquarium, the Botanic Gardens, the Denver Mint, Elitches and Lakeside Amusement Parks--any of the fun you want in Denver is an hour or less away from this secluded mountain home. And then there are all the mountain adventures described elsewhere--this property is ideally located, a central hub for so many kinds of activities.
