About this property
Art-Filled Lakefront Cottage: Fire Pit, Kayaks & Views
A colorful, cozy 2-bedroom cottage right on the water, 20 minutes from Middlebury. Watch eagles and osprey soar past, feed the resident chipmunks, and let the lake breeze keep the bugs away while you finish that novel (or start one) by the gas fireplace or the fire pit under some of the best stargazing around.
Kick back on the deck with a martini and mountain views, or get out on the water with 2 kayaks and a canoe — great for floating, paddling, and fishing bass and perch right off the shore. The slate beach is a beachcomber's dream for fossils and arrowheads, though swimming leans more toward floating than laps (some weed growth in the lake). Great WiFi and A/C included, and yes — book yourself a private yoga session with Chessy, our resident cleaning-gal-turned-yoga-guru.
The cottage sits on a quiet dead-end country road just off the Vermont bike touring route, so there's zero traffic noise. Full kitchen stocked with everything you need, right down to spices and olive oil. Middlebury itself is a short, gorgeous drive away, with galleries, the college, bistros, pickleball and tennis at the Rec Center, waterfalls, hiking, and Revolutionary War-era forts across the bridge in New York — plenty to explore, though most guests find they don't want to leave the cottage at all.
A couple of house notes: we spray for ticks regularly, and please use organic soaps only and go easy on the septic system, given its closeness to the lake. Watch the video — it really does say it all.

The lake view from the living room and kitchen was truly awesome, and the house was artistically decorated and functional. We found our experience very warm and tranquil. We plan on returning.
When we arrived, there was a note from the host and some treats. Place was beautiful. Very peaceful. It was just what my husband and I needed.Thank you!
Property exactly as described. Very quiet, right on the lake. Bed was comfortable, shower modern, and the kitchen big and bright. The fact that the host was next door added to our enjoyment. It was a delightful week!
This is a lovely cottage in a wonderful location. It was a relaxing retreat from real life, and it was close enough to a variety of things to do to keep a girl and her dog busy.
Laurel was an excellent host, responded to all my inquiries quickly and with much appreciated wit! The place was clean and the furnishings were very comfortable. The house, as the pictures show, is right on the lake in a lovely quiet setting. Like a dream come true. Highly recommend!
We had a beautiful, relaxing, & activity filled stay in this unique lakeside cottage with an osprey-level view of the southern end of Lake Champlain. Kayaking, bird watching, apple picking, day trips to Middlebury & Vergennes & lounging around the atmospheric cottage made for a top notch experience all around. Thanks!
A beautiful, quiet cabin. Exactly as advertised. Clean, funky decor. Spent half of each day floating in the lake in some cheapy pool inflatables we brought with us and it was awesome. Great communication with host. Thanks for a much needed getaway.

Lori, thanks, you guys did it the right way! Floating! LOL
Absolutely adored the character and charm of this lovely cottage on the lake that had everything we could possibly have needed for a relaxing and restoring break. It took a few crazy windstorms to remove us from the glorious deck/shore view and watching all the wildlife (while munching on delish cheese curds from the creamery up the road). I will definitely be back!

Thank you Nicolle!! It seems like you guys really got into the groove !!
Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer. Very pleasant accommodations, and a quiet and scenic location. We plan on coming back but for a longer stay. Many thanks.
My wife and I spent a half-work, half-vacation week in the cottage, and it met all of our needs. WiFi was great for web conferences, and AT&T and Verizon cell service strong. The lake view is fantastic. Laurel is a great hostess. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a quiet lakeside camp.

You guys were great! You can come work here anytime! X
The cottage was amazingly peaceful and restorative. Having arrived after dark, to wake up the next morning seemingly touching the lake was breathtaking. As the listing says, cute and eclectic. The 3 of us had a great stay.
Isolation at its finest. We were only here 4 days with 2.6 days of bad weather. Feel like temps of 49 in the middle of August was a shock. Checked out Burlington and Middlebury during windy cloudy days Lake front house was awesome. Not luxury but very homey with everything we needed. Loved being the only one on the lake.

About the host
Hosted by Laurel Casey
I grew up in Middlebury, and this house was where we kids escaped since I was in high school. We had some pretty great parties then, and now that my parents are gone, I treasure those memories greatly. My parents left the 'camp' to me, and being an artist, AND a city girl, I decided that the only way I could keep the cottage was to redesign and renovate it- and rent it out to pay the taxes! My daughter visits, not often enough of course, and we enjoy our quiet time together here- scrabble, canoeing, campfire and marshmallows. I've met wonderful people who vacation here, and some have become long time friends! I thought it would be a bit of a headache, the renting, not being a business person, but it's been really FUN! I've enjoyed creating a cozy haven, and it makes me happy, and know it would make my parents happy, to know that people are having a great time in this special spot. I love it when guests find an interesting piece of slate or a fossil, and leave it on the counter. I've had a few people who were real sticklers for perfection... usually catch on to them by their cryptic e-mails. One woman demanded the a tree that blocked her view of the lake be cut down. She said, 'Hell! I'll cut it down, give me a saw!' - I didn't want to kill the poor tree but trimmed it later. Kind of.
Why they chose this property
I continue from above- A third generation Vermonter, everybody is gone now, daughter in D.C., two brothers live far away- others are six feet under!- so it's just me, and my dog- holding on to our sliver of paradise! I spent most of my time in New York or Providence, being both painter and performance artist/cabaret singer. Not much work in these parts for the likes of me. I now spend time in Ajijic, Mexico! As I travel the country I am beginning to realize how special Vermont is. I always took it for granted- the quiet, leaving keys in the car all the time, feeling safe, fresh air, the beauty and peace. And there is no reason to draw the curtains...ever...only the squirrels are around to peep in, and they could care less. There are now three kayaks for your use. Sturdy, indestructible. Canoe, too. Middlebury is 13 miles away, fantastic farmers market Wed. and Sat. all summer.!!!
What makes this property unique
My parents chose this property, I think, because they felt a camp should be an escape hatch! they chose the boonies!- and now, all these years later, it's STILL the boonies- friendly neighbors round the bend. little path in front of the cottage to easy stairs to private slate beach. I tell my guests all the secret Vermont hide-away trails, brooks, swimming holes! I have had a few people who didn't have a bohemian bone in their body, and I could spot them the minute they got out of the car- a heavy, negative energy that just doesn't fit in this colorful, gorgeous, happy place. Camp Casey isn't perfect- you WILL see a cobweb!- there is no stopping them, so close to the lake and way out in the country. You WILL hear a screaching fox in the woods, and you will also see shooting stars, as the sky has no light pollution. I sometimes take a lawn chair down to the beach and lay back, say 4 in the morning, and watch the show. Mosquitos don't like the lake breeze, neither do black flies, so with a little bug spray you're good to go. I would rather have NO guests than unhappy guests or guests who didn't understand where they were headed, and who I didn't think would be a good match for the place. I don't want to ruin the loving energy of the house with people who are looking for the Ritz-Carlton.
