About this property

Beautiful cabin on Little River, half mile from the Desoto State Park Ranger Station, in the mountains near charming Mentone, Alabama. This house has two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. It has a deck overlooking the river, with a gas grill. The house is furnished and the kitchen is fully stocked (bring your own food and drink). NO PETS ALLOWED. The house sleeps 8: bedroom 1 has a queen and a twin bed; bedroom 2 has two twins and a bunk bed (full on bottom/twin on top). There is also a full size futon in the den. Close to great hiking, swimming, and canoeing (canoe available for guests). House has a flat screen TV, with a DVD player and a DVD library for all ages. The house has wifi via a satellite service. The wifi does support email and web searches, but does not support streaming movies or high data usage, and is prone to weather related interference and slow network speeds (satellite delays and high usage in the community). Due to the location, the house does not receive local TV channels. If football or other TV related events are important in your lifestyle, please stay some place else so you are not disappointed.
The house is on a steep hill over the water, so not an ideal place for putting in a boat unless you are in great shape. We have a canoe down by the water for guests to use. There is one step to get into the house (the front porch), but the rest of the house is one level and easy to navigate. The stairs in the picture are to get down from the deck to the water. THIS PROPERTY DOES NOT HAVE A DOCK. PLEASE DO NOT USE THE NEIGHBOR'S DOCK, THEY WILL PROSECUTE TRESPASSERS.
There is a swimming hole, which is also a good place to put in personal canoes/kayaks, 1/4 mile down the river, near the bridge.
Also, this is a house in the woods. There may occasionally be bugs or critters, and the place may get dusty, just as every house does. The house and linens will be thoroughly cleaned between visitors, and if you see a problem during your stay just let us know and we'll fix it.
The house is accessed by a key pad lock on the door. To unlock the house, enter the code and turn the knob that is on the keypad. Then turn the door knob.
Google maps has been taking guests to County Road 612, but not to the house. Please turn on CR 612 and drive to the correct house. The number is on the house.

Great river access home for visiting DeSoto State Park

House is simple and well stocked. The location is perfect for accessing trails at Desoto. Enjoyed the canoe for accessing the river. Fire pit was great for relaxing by the water. Enjoyed our short stay and look forward to going back.

Planning the next trip NOW!

First off, Valerie is the best host I’ve ever dealt with, super accommodating and accurate, even when plans change a little! Communication was immediate. The cabin itself is everything needed for a week getaway and then some. My wife and I couldn’t get over how quiet and peaceful it was. Our 11 month old daughter enjoyed the open floor plan with lots of playing room. Couldn’t think of a complaint, we’re planning our next trip, this time we’re sharing the experience with friends!

Doug and I married in 2009. We work hard and travel in our spare time. We enjoy meeting new people, exploring new places, and doing projects (such as restoring this house).

Why they chose this property

My parents visited Desoto State Park for their anniversary 25 years ago and loved the area, so they purchased this house. We restored it for my mother, and will manage it for her and make it available for the entire family to use, as both my parents intended when they purchased it.

What makes this property unique

This home is unique because it is waterfront property. The water is clear and cool in the summer, with people swimming and canoeing past the house. There is a kids' summer camp a half mile down the river. It is adjacent to DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon Nature Preserve, with beautiful hiking trails and Ranger talks on Friday and Saturday nights. Mentone and Fort Payne are nearby for lovely meals and shopping, and both Fort Payne's Visitor Center and the Ranger station, which is half a mile down the road from the cabin, have lots of information of the wonderful things to do in the local area. The area has several festivals throughout the year, and there are beautiful waterfalls nearby. The deer walk up to the front porch, a guest spotted two black bears in the woods by the house, and the bird watching is fantastic. Chattanooga is 30 miles away as well. The nearest grocery stores are in Fort Payne, about ten miles away. There are a couple gas stations with food stuff and a Dollar General 5 miles down the road.
