New - Paved Driveway, Deck Roof/Railing, and Starlink High-Speed Internet! We also recently had some trees topped off to improve the mountain view. We're constantly striving to improve our cabin amenities for you.
This cabin for couples is the perfect location for the two of you to enjoy all that Franklin, Highlands, Cashiers, and Sylva have to offer. Don't just take my word for it, check out the wonderful reviews that previous guests have left.
Enjoy your time relaxing in the cabin or the deck with a view of the mountain and the peace and quiet away from the hectic day-to-day, and reconnect with each other.
This beautiful, new, bear-themed, compact park model log cabin perched on a hill in Laurel Canyon between Franklin and Highlands, nestled between the trees with a breathtaking mountain view of Cedar Knob from the covered deck, is a wonderful spot in the mountains for a couple to get away to unplug, unwind, relax, and renew.
Conveniently located between Franklin, Highlands, and Cashiers with a short drive to the many area attractions and only a few minutes away from the scenic Cullasaja River Gorge, Cullasaja Falls, Dry Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Glenville Lake. Other nearby attractions include gem mining at Jackson Hole and antiquing at the nearby Whistle Stop. There are plenty of attractions, restaurants, and local festivals/events in nearby Franklin and Highlands. Google the Discover Franklin, NC tourism and Macon County Chamber of Commerce websites for attractions and festival/event schedules. 45-minute drive to Cherokee and the Smoky Mountains.
Built in 2018 by Green River Cabins, this "Yearling" model cabin is fully furnished with a kitchen that is ready for cooking, cozy breakfast bar, and barstools, a living room with dual recliner love seat, an electric fireplace, and TV with Blu-Ray/DVD player, full bedroom with a queen-sized bed and plenty of wardrobe and drawer space for all of your personal items, compact washer and dryer, and bathroom with 48” shower, ceiling fans in the living room/kitchen area and bedroom. There is a gas grill on the covered deck for grilling and rocking chairs to sit and enjoy the beautiful view of the mountain across the canyon.
The driveway is fully paved now, no more worry about getting up the gravel driveway or needing all wheel drive, you could climb it easily in a Prius. Getting to the cabin, there are no gravel roads to travel. The upper parking area can accommodate two vehicles. A lower parking area at the base of the drive can accommodate a small vehicle..
The cabin is equipped with Starlink satellite internet service at the cabin with free wi-fi. Speeds can vary depending on weather and other factors, but it's more than plenty for 2 people (100mbps, often more). For streaming, web surfing and e-mail, it's amazingly fast, although you may experience an occasional blip on teleconferencing apps in the summer months.
There is a 50" Roku smart TV in the living room with Blu-Ray player and a selection of DVDs. There is a 32" Roku smart TV in the bedroom. You can log in to your favorite streaming services with Roku (Sling, Hulu, YoutubeTV, Netflix, Amazon, Disney, etc.) and enjoy your favorite shows and movies in the cabin. There is no landline telephone service or local TV channels.
Cellular service in the mountains is spotty so we have installed a cellular booster kit at the cabin. AT&T works best (3-5 bars), Verizon gets a fair service (1-2 bars). One of our recent guests that has Sprint reported that they had cell service at the cabin. We have not tested with other carriers. Cell phone reception can vary depending on the time of year (tree cover), weather, and the phone's internal antenna (some models are better than others). If your phone supports internet calling, just connect it to the Starlink high-speed internet.
We hope you’ll love our little cabin as much as we do and that you will feel relaxed, refreshed, renewed, and reconnected after your stay.
Smoking is allowed outside on the deck with the doors closed, but not inside the cabin.

Staring at the mountain while sitting on the deck in a rocking chair with a cold beer in my hand, a steak cooking on the grill, and my wife by my side with a glass of wine is our "happy place". I'm glad we got to share that with you, and you had a great time. Come back anytime!
We absolutely loved our stay at this cabin! The view was breathtaking, and the whole space had such a clean, cozy, home-away-from-home feel. It was the perfect balance—secluded enough to feel peaceful and private, yet close enough to everything we wanted to explore. It truly made our getaway special, and we’re already looking forward to coming back!

It was our pleasure having you as guests. We're glad you had a great experience.
Perfect location for a couple wanting to be isolated from most of the world. Great place to stay in and read, or to drive a few miles to hike, shop, or eat. We hope to have the opportunity to return several times.

Liked: Cleanliness, amenities, property conditions & facilities, communication
Pros: Quiet, nice view, private, good communication from owner, 20 minute drive to town, nice variety of restaurants nearby. Convenient to local attractions, (waterfalls, train ride, shopping, horseback riding, etc ).
Cons: you have to take your own trash off to local convenience center or pay $50 charge to leave it on property. Nice paved driveway, but due to season, was covered in leaves which made it difficult to drive up without car loosing traction. No dishwasher.
Beautiful cabin to unwind and relax. Way up in the woods with a lovely view from the doors and deck. All the essentials and amenities you need. Great central location for day trips to surrounding mountain towns. Highly recommend!

Cabin was very clean, and so peaceful. Cabin has everything you need and a wonderful view. No internet service or WiFi, but That was fine for us it was nice to get away from everything. The owner was super nice and helpful with places to visit. Only a few minutes from town and short ride to beautiful waterfalls. This was one of my favorite places we have stayed.

Glad you had a great stay and thanks for the nice review!
This property is just the right distance from congestion to be peaceful and quiet, and yet not inconvenient. The entire location is very well kept and clean. There are numerous modern conveniences. And the manager is easy to communicate with. Overall, a great place to stay.
Very pleasant stay in the Black Bear Cove cabin. The owner is phenomenal with his communication and availability. The property is very clean and dry with the addition of the covered patio. The newly paved entrance up to the property was greatly appreciated. Overall gets the max stars for everything. Would stay again and again.
The cabin appeared new and well maintained. It is small, but a fine size for a couple. We had no phone or internet service which was fine for couples who need to get reacquainted. There are lots of great waterfalls and hiking trails to keep us busy during the day. We would definitely stay there again.

Thanks for nice review. We do have a cell repeater but it only seems to work with AT&T and Verizon. But it is nice to get away from the digital world for a few days and reconnect.

We just added a lower parking area for front wheel drive or smaller vehicles that can’t make it all the way up to the top of the drive. It’s about a 75/foot walk from the lower parking area up to the cabin.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this cozy little cabin. We were wishing we had booked for longer than four nights. The view is beautiful and the cabin was very clean, warm and welcoming. John was awesome with communicating and very quick to respond to any of our questions. He was also very helpful with recommending local attractions and restaurants. We would love to visit again next year!!

Thanks for your great review. We hop to have you as our guests again next season.
Consistent with the last time I stayed, all was wonderful. Cabin is clean and comfortable - love the beautiful view. This trip I enjoyed some different hikes - the Cliffside Recreation Area on the way to Highlands has a nice picnic area, place for swimming, and several trails. Communication with owners is consistently great. This is a wonderful get away spot for solo's or couples looking for a quiet spot central to many great outdoor activities.

Thanks for staying with us again! Glad you had a great time.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Black Bear Cove! What a cozy little cabin with every amenity you need. The only issue we had was the steep driveway (which owner did warn about) but we made it up each time! I'm just glad my husband did the driving and we were in his Nissan truck. The cabin was perfect for our 35th wedding anniversary weekend. Thanks so much!

Glad you had a great time!
Yes, the driveway can be a little tricky if you don't have AWD or full-size rear-wheel drive vehicle, or if you aren't used to mountain gravel driveways. That's why we installed a lower parking area for people with smaller or front-wheel drive vehicles or who aren't as adventurous.
We're still saving up to have the drive paved, hopefully next year.
The cabin was absolutely adorable, super clean, and just the right size for my husband and me. The driveway was just a little tight for our really big truck, but we made it...4 wheel drive going and coming. I did think it was a little odd that the air conditioning couldn't be turned down below 76. That's hard for a menopausal woman with hot flashes. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. Thank you, again, for your hospitality.

The air cam be turned down lower than 76. I just ask when guests leave for the day that they assist accordingly to avoid high utility rates and having to raise my rates. I left there ager a 3 week stay the day before you arrived, it was in the low 60s at night and we slept with the windows open. I totally understand about menopausal women as my missus has been there and fine that but she wants the windows open in the summer. Maybe because we are from Florida and live our lives cupped up in the summer.
I just spent $12k to have the driveway paved earlier this year. 4wd is not necessary. You can climb it in a wimpy 4 cylinder front wheel drive car had a friend test that for me.
The first few times i climbed out in a f150 crew cab long bed i had to learn to swing the turn at the top a little wider than normal and i bored that to this guest. This guest came up with a very large truck to haul a large trailer to the gem show which might require a bit of finesse. The UPS lowes and Amazon delivery tricks make it to the top without problems but maybe they are used to it.
Aside from that we're glad you enjoyed your stay.
About the host
Hosted by John Grocke
We had vacationed in the Franklin area for 20+ years and finally decided to build our own place. We look forward to sharing it with others when we aren't there to enjoy it. It took us 8 years of saving, planning, and efforts to finally build our place, and it's perfect. Close enough to town to enjoy shopping, dining, attractions, and local festivals, but far enough away to enjoy all the tranquility the NC mountains have to offer.
Why they chose this property
The minute I saw this property I fell in love with the mountain view of Cedar Knob and the peace and quiet away from the hustle of the city. This is my favorite spot on planet Earth. We decided to have this custom Green River Cabin placed on the property with a deck with the view of the mountain. Our goal is to retire here at least 6 months out of the year.
What makes this property unique
Now that the kids are grown and off on their own and it's just the two "empty nesters", we wanted a cozy place in the mountains for just the two of us to unplug, reconnect, relax, and unwind. We love enjoying each other's company, relaxing on the deck while looking at the mountains, reading, and watching DVD's while "unplugged" from the hustle of daily life. This cabin is perfect for that. We want others to experience the joy that we have when it's just the two of us for a week alone, relaxing and reconnecting with each other.
