About this property
Alone Mill Schoolhouse - A paradise for outdoor lovers
Come experience the magic of Alone Mill! Canoe, bike, hike or just hang out by the creek!
We are a 15 minute (6 mile) drive from Lexington, Virginia, home to Washington & Lee University, Virginia Military Institute and the Virginia Horse Center. Rockbridge County Virginia is home to the Maury River, the only river in Virginia that begins & ends in the same county. Spring, summer and fall are great times for running the whitewater in Goshen Pass or tubing the flat water into Lexington. Come to the country where you can stay up late, dazzled by the stars and the Milky Way.
In the late fall & winter, enjoy our cozy cabin and a game of pool. After dark in June and July, the lightning-bug display is amazing every night! Later in the summer and fall, the tree frogs and cicadas fill the air with their songs. The cabin is right on a popular (and challenging) biking route.
The School House is located within 300 yards of a river access point locally known as Alone Mill. Upstream is my personal favorite stretch of canoeing on the Maury, it's a peaceful 5 hour ride in slow water and can be as fast as 2 hours when the river is up! You can put in at Goshen or Rockbridge Baths and walk home from the take-out.
If you're more interested in a bubbling stream, Alone Mill Creek passes within 50 feet of the front door!
Rockbridge County also has thousands of acres of National Forest and State-managed land for hunting and hiking in the mountains. The cabin is within about 6 miles of access at Goshen Pass and other spots are equally close.
Other activities at the School House include a pool table, ping pong, basketball goal and badmitton set. The yard is large and flat, perfect for a football game, and the driveway is flat also, good for the little kids to practice bike riding.
A 1 mile walk will take you to weekend wine tasting at Lexington Valley Vineyard, one of several vineyards in the county.

We had a great experience. Owner’s were easy to communicate with and very laid back. It’s a unique spot. Definitely was a great fit for spending time with family. Would stay here again.
This place was fantastic. I was going to an alpaca show at the Virginia Horse Center and it was a great place to bring my family. I will say that we did not have time to explore the grounds but the home provided everything we needed and couldn’t have done any better. Would definitely stay there again if the opportunity arises.
We had a nice relaxing stay at the schoolhouse. It has a cozy “grandma’s house” vibe, perfect for a last minute visit with my college student. We appreciated the comfortable beds and that each bedroom could adjust the baseboard heat to their own comfort level. The kitchen was equipped with what we needed, and teens/young adults enjoyed the pool table. Once you get accustomed to the roads, the trip into town is easy and scenic. True to the listing, home isn’t fancy, but it was perfect for our relaxing long weekend.
Great time, beautiful area. The kids loved the pool table and seeing the deer in the morning. The hosts provided everything we needed. We can't wait to visit again.
A very quiet, peaceful location, but yet only 15 minutes from Lexington. The house was spotless and very comfortable. The kitchen was stocked with everything you need. This was a lively get away li ation!
This was a wonderful place for our family to stay. Even though it was cold out, the heat worked well. The kids had fun playing in the yard and the creek. The Christmas tree was a nice touch -- made it feel like home. It was also neat reading about the history of the schoolhouse, and the community it served. We'd love to stay here again when we're back in the neighborhood.
The house was wonderful everything u need .Guest was awesome it was quite loved sitting out on the porch after work and did manage to get 1 or 2 games of pool in we just loved it will definitely go back hopefully with family as a vacation
The house was spacious and clean, the host lives nearby and greeted us when we arrived. The location definitely is remote in the woods but the yard was great to let our dog roam on a long leash.
This is a great house with a lot of room!! The yard is great for kids! Had everything we needed for a fantastic quiet stay!! Chuck and Sarah are great host!!
Alone Mill Schoolhouse was very charming, had everything we needed for our stay, and the host who lived nearby was wonderful and welcoming. Check in and check out was about as easy as it gets! We were near our family wedding venue which made it nice. Breathtaking part of Virginia. Would recommend to friends and family.
We had a lovely weekend! The house was perfect with 3 bedrooms and a den. We went to the Virginia Safari on Saturday. Grilled steaks Saturday. And had s’mores at the fire pit that evening. It was off the beaten path, but was still within 15 minutes to Walmart and Starbucks. Overall a great stay!
Enjoyable and relaxing, close to Natural Bridge attractions. The only thing I would have liked more is if the bushes on the porch off the pool room had been trimmed up so we could have used that porch area better, but besides that everything else was great. Thank you George Perras
Great place to stay for a quiet, outdoorsy getaway. It's not fancy, it's quaint, and plenty of room for a small group. We loved the side porch, the creek and teaching our little one to play pool. Thank you!
This was the perfect middle point for our family to meet for a long weekend. Everything was wonderful. Sarah and Charles showed us how to get to the river access. The yard was fantastic for games and we all enjoyed creek stomping. The house was great. Very comfortable and well laid out. We look forward to staying again!
I have lived in Rockbridge County, VA since 1990. While I attended W&L, my friends & I often drove around the county. I always loved driving through Alone Mill when we were going to Goshen Pass; I knew there was special magic in this place. It's peaceful & the stars are brighter than most.
Why they chose this property
My partner bought a house at Alone Mill in 1998 & when the Schoolhouse became available in 2007, I jumped at the opportunity. The Maury River here is perfect for canoeing, tubing, or just lounging in a chair at the edge of the water! Anyone who likes to spend time outdoors loves Alone Mill.
What makes this property unique
Fresh water recreation - fishing, canoeing, boating, tubing - and plenty to do inside or in Lexington area if the weather isn't perfect. Ample space in the cabin for a large group to gather and enjoy time together.
