Charming Sapphire Blue Owls Head Waterfront Cottage
Sapphire Blue Cottage on Mahalas Lane with a weekly rental schedule of Saturday to Saturday.
Maximum number of guests - eight - with a weekly rental schedule of Saturday to Saturday.
Located in Owls Head, this quaint and unique 1930s cottage is nestled near the end of a private lane. A guest of the cottage, the author, Marianne Cushing, has had published (December 2013) her debut novel, Mahalas Lane (the lane of the cottage and hence our address), which uses the cottage as a point of reference for her investigation-romance work of art. Overlooking Crocketts Beach and Penobscot Bay, Mahalas Lane is serene and relaxing, a true seaside get-away.
Crocketts Beach, when the tide is out a bit, is a perfectly sandy beach all the way out into the water. Children, less fragile than adults, do not seem to mind at all the refreshing aspects of the Maine water, and enjoy the swimming without having to negotiate bothersome rocks with their feet. (Adults seem to appreciate this pleasing aspect as well.)
Crocketts Beach is especially well-suited for kayaking and provides for a nice ability to explore, by kayak, Little Island (a very small island about 1/4 mile off the beach which you can almost walk to at low tide), nearby Crescent Beach, Ash Island and Sheep Island. There are really only about three other cottages-homes on Crocketts Beach, thus the beach is private and unique in that sense as well.
On the south side of the property line landscape by the beach house, there is a walking path that runs through the trees along the south side of the beach house down to the shoreline that residents of the lane have used and are and have been permitted to use for at least going over the past 86 years.
Any other non-guest foot traffic to the shoreline through the cottage property is not permitted. The cottage provides for our guests its own private access to the shoreline from its own private cottage property grounds which run to and meet the shoreline, the perspective of which is captured in the accompanying photographs.
The cottage is architecturally unique, reminiscent of a ship with a bowed front, pristine white ship-lap throughout, a number of small, port-hole windows and a built-in, ship's cabin-like bed.
At the front of the cottage, there is an ample yard and natural gardens surround the house. It is a pleasing space at any time of the day; especially for sitting on the patio for morning coffee and watching the sunrise over the ocean. Then it is also pleasing to stroll down to the ocean-front beach house for an afternoon of reading.
The main house (cottage), approximately 196' from the shoreline, and the beach house, approximately 72' from the shoreline, has three bedrooms which includes two king and two twin Danforth Mission style platform beds from The Bedworks of Maine, a built-in twin-sized bed and, beneath one of the two twin Danforth Mission style platform beds from The Bedworks of Maine, a trundle twin sized bed.
The first upstairs bedroom is an open-space concept with a built-in twin bed that mimics a ship's bunk, a small, port-hole window and two large casement windows that open towards the ocean. Two twin beds, a love-seat sofa and the built-in twin bed described above. This bedroom also provides a trundle twin-sized bed, from The Bedworks of Maine, that is placed beneath one of the two twin beds.
The downstairs and upstairs master bedrooms have Danforth Mission style platform king beds from The Bedworks of Maine and ocean views and adjoining bathrooms.
The well-equipped kitchen has spectacular views of the ocean and opens into the living room and dining room areas, both with ocean views. Windows offer natural light and light sea breezes.
There are two bedrooms upstairs and one full bath. The first bedroom upstairs is an open space bedroom where children and young adults often stay and provides two twin Danforth Mission style platform beds from The Bedworks of Maine, a love-seat sofa and one twin built-in bed that mimics, as mentioned above, a ship's bunk. A twin sized trundle bed is also provided beneath one of the two twin beds. This open space bedroom has a view of the ocean and enjoys ocean breezes and the sound of the ocean striking the shoreline - especially at night when reading a book or falling asleep.
This open space provides the sense of breadth, the flow of both natural light and late-night catching-upwith friends or family, peace, relaxation, wing-span and comfort for the bonding of families and friends.
The second upstairs bedroom, a master bedroom, has a private bath and one Danforth Mission style platform king bed from The Bedworks of Maine with an ocean view with comfortable furnishings
There is also a beach cottage on the property, located at the water’s edge. The guest cottage offers a Danforth queen Mission style platform bed from The Bedworks of Maine, as well as a campaign style desk-table, two slipcovered sitting chairs, a state-of-the-art BioLet 65XL composting commode situated in the beach cottage's exterior closet, an under-counter refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster oven, a flat screen television, cable television, Blu-Ray DVD player and Internet WI-FI, a countertop water dispenser and a spacious deck with a panoramic view of the ocean. This is the perfect place to sit and watch the day come to an end.
The location of Mahalas Lane is ideal. Owls Head is home of the Transportation Museum and the Owls Head Lighthouse where Spot, the Springer spaniel, is buried by the lighthouse bell (see the true story of Lighthouse Dog to the Rescue).
Owls Head is a small, quiet community just minutes from Rockland (the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Primo Restaurant, In Good Company wine bar, Fiore premium Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars and Jess's Market for lobsters and fresh seafood - Down East Magazine's readers' choice for best seafood market in Maine). The General Store in Owls Head offers breakfasts, the famous 7-Napkin Burger and is an authentic, old style general store.
Thomaston, Rockport and Camden are also nearby. Rockport is the setting for the Samoset Resort (the well-appointed La Bella Vita restaurant with a magnificent view of Penobscot Bay, the tranquil, fresh, clean, seaside aesthetic of The Spa and a beautiful seaside, championship golf course) and Maine Sport Outfitters (offering for purchase or rental items for almost any conceivable sporting interest ranging from kayaking, biking and running to camping and winter sports).
These larger cities offer museums, restaurants, shopping, festivals and endless cultural activities. Cape Air flies into (and out of) Owls Head (the Knox County Regional Airport) from Boston (a one hour flight) and other regional locations. Car rentals (Budget) can be made from the Knox County Regional Airport.
The cottage offers a washer and dryer, Bosch dishwasher, hair dryer, hand held clothes steamer, cable television in the cottage and at the beach house and Internet Wi-Fi connection in the cottage and the beach house. The outdoor patio has a Char-Broil 4 burner LP grill.

As always, a cozy stay at the shore of Owl’s Head. It’s a unique cottage and close enough to any amenity as to be an easy drive if you need something say within 15-20 minutes, but far enough away to afford real calm, quiet, privacy. We’ve always appreciated the cozy first floor den with multiple couches and window views out to the horizon. Exploring coastal Maine is easy when you have such a relaxing home base to recharge within!
This was our second time staying at the cottage. It fits the needs of our family as it's quiet and peaceful with a serene beach you can enjoy without crowds. Love this little place!
Everything we needed (and then some!) was onsite and ready to provide us with a most relaxing week. The private, quiet location, right on the water, is exceptional. The tasteful, quality furnishings made us feel right at home as soon as we walked in. Communication with our host was easy and straightforward. The location is central to many mid-coastal activities and restuarants as well. It was exactly the vacation week we were hoping for!
We had a wonderful time at the cottage. It was a great launching point for exploring the area and we enjoyed leisurely mornings playing on the beach. Would definitely highly recommend!
This was our 2nd year at the cottage. We enjoyed our week last year so much that we returned for four weeks this year. It truly is our happy place. Nothing more relaxing than sitting on beach watching the bald eagles, boats sailing by, and the landscape changing with the tides. Paul is an amazing host. We cannot thank him enough for sharing this place with us.
The home, ocean, and neighborhood are all exquisite and Owl's Head's energy is magical. The home has all the comforts of home and the (practically) private beach is the most fabulous part!
The place was very nice, there were bananas and apples on the table!! Great touch the weather was terrible fog was in and rain but had a nice time!!

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Cleanliness, listing accuracy
We were excited to stay at this highly rated cottage with our adult children. The location is absolutely beautiful—peaceful, scenic, and perfect for exploring the area. The main cottage is cozy and well-furnished, though the Mission-style beds and pillows were extremely firm and not very comfortable. The kitchen is charming and well-equipped, but a bit cluttered and tight for cooking. Appliances worked fine despite some wear. Every traveler has different preferences, and I wanted to share ours to balance the glowing reviews.
We rented this house for four people for a week and loved waking up having coffee by the ocean. The house is has a well equipped kitchen and plenty of cozy space. Paul was super communicative and helpful. Thank you!
The place is very much as depicted in the web site -- cozy, charming, peaceful. It is very convenient to Rockland and there is a short walk in the Ash Point Reserve not more than a minute down the road. Paul was very responsive to requests (the woodpile had been depleted by the prior guest and he was quick to replenish it).

Special and Charming
Perfectly as described - peaceful and restorative - sorting out for outselves the bittersweet melancholy of leaving this lovely wonderful cottage behind and returning home - A bientot, Sunrise cottage
The location is perfect. The yard had room to play. The beach is beautiful, rocky at high tide and sandy at low tide- just like a Maine beach should be. we used the fire pit many times. The beds were super comfortable. Lots of utensils and kitchen gadgets to get meals prepared. It was our second stay and we plan to be back!
This property is wonderful. The location to the water and access to a beach was the best part of the week. The home is lovely and clean! Paul is so nice to work with and really cares about your stay. We had blues sky’s all week and watched amazing fireworks from a neighbor a few doors down. Lobster, sunshine, boating swimming and family. A perfect week!
Spent an amazing week here. The cottage is quaint and its location cannot be beat. Loved waking up to coffee while watching the sunrise over the water and the birds. The older kids loved the fire right in the beach. The property was meticulously landscaped further adding to its charm. Paul was an amazing host and great to deal with. He nailed all the recommendations, especially Jess’s Market for fresh seafood. You can’t go wrong with this place.
We really needed a break as a family and this was perfection. Comfortable, unique, charming, and well equipped with quality furniture and a stunning view. Room for some aggressive badminton 😁 followed by a cocktail and beach bonfire. Central location, good shower, great table for dinner and crafting. Our girls loved having upstairs to themselves. Truly a delight.
The house was charming and comfortable. We were blessed with about five sunny days…wonderful after coming from a very rainy summer. Disappointed that the house was not actually in a private setting on the water…pictures seemed to indicate a more private and picturesque setting.
Our host bent over backwards to take care of anything that needed to be taken care of…
Overall, this location was fantastic! The beach fire pit was our favorite. To sit and enjoy a fire with the ocean waves hitting the beach was the best! The cottage is sweet and well stocked with everything we needed. It was a little tricky in the beginning to figure out the heat, and all important fire wood, but our host was super responsive to answer any questions we had as we settled in. The walks in the general area were spectacular with color and McLoons Lobster shack was a fun outing too. Check out was a breeze, we did nothing which is unusual but greatly appreciated!

Peaceful setting
A great place to come and relax with family or friends! Unfortunately the carriage house was being renovated so the kids were not able to go play in there. Also the beach house was nice but no bathroom yet. The house is decorated nicely and well equipped. Our kids had a blast here playing on the beach and exploring. The house is nicely located near Rockland and Camden.....make sure you visit these nice towns! Owners are super nice and made sure we were comfortable.

Yep, we are going back!
After having visited Crockett Beach the year before, we looked for a house in the area last year and found this one! What a delight. Owner has remodeled and redecorated this fabulous cottage into a really nice retreat... Beautiful ocean views and charming beach cottage, too. Easy to get into town. It is so nice to get up and go down to the beach for quiet morning solitude... And, yep, we are going back again this year. The owner is very easy to work with and is always making more updates... Can't wait til October!
Our family had a wonderful week in this beautiful location and lovely, charming, well-appointed and equipped cottage home. Views from ocean facing windows were inviting and ever-changing with the tides and weather. On foggy, rainy days, we were cozy, reading and working puzzles inside, and when the sun favored us, we spent hours by the shore. Can't think of a thing we would change about the cottage, the guest house, or our access to the water, the breeze, and the sounds of waves on the beach. Everything we had hoped for and more! Our host was exceptional and attentive to ensuring our enjoyment of our vacation. We're eager to identify a time when we'll be able to return; this will be our Maine vacation destination from now on!
