About this property
WNC Cabin near Old Fort
Beautiful 3 bedroom 2.5 bath log home on 2 private acres tucked away in the gated community of Gateway Mountain. This was our full time residence and we left everything there, so it will have everything a fully functional home should have.
The trailhead to the Gateway Waterfall is just a few steps down the road. If you go a bit further you'll stumble upon Lake George, where you can enjoy the covered dock with a nice view of the lake and the Gateway ridges. Many hiking/walking loops mapped out in the Cabin's information book.
Our first level is open concept with cathedral ceilings that will give you the true log cabin experience. Island counter top and large hand crafted dining room table provide plenty of room to prepare food and gather with family and friends. Living area with smart 50" TV. Two bedrooms - one queen, and one with two twins. The second level is the master suite with attached bathroom. Jacuzzi bathtub and walk in shower.
Covered porch and deck encompassing two full sides of the cabin. Weber grill and patio furniture to enjoy the deck to its fullest. Smoker (14" Weber Smokey Mountain) is available to use if you want to try smoking meat for the first time or perform your patented smoke.
Jotul wood-burning stove for cozy winter/fall warmth. Outdoor fire pit out back to enjoy the stars and mountain peace. Wood is provided.
Towns of Old Fort and Black Mountain only 20-30 minutes away. East Asheville 40 minutes. Lake Lure 35 minutes.
Old Fort has a growing restaurant/brewery scene, including Hillman and Whaley Farm Breweries. Catawba Falls just outside of Old Fort has reopened with updated hiking trails! Also check out the new G5 Trail Collective! For mountain bikers, just up the mountain from Old Fort is Kitsuma Peak and if you are a serious biker come in July for the Jerdon Mountain Challenge! The Gateway Trails off Curtis Creek in Old Fort have multi-use trails for all skill levels.
Quickest route to the Blue Ridge Parkway is taking 80 just outside of Marion. Once on the parkway go NE towards Little Switzerland, Altapass, and Linville Falls. Or go SW towards Mount Mitchell State Park, Craggy Gardens, and get off in Asheville right by the NC Arboretum! The views on the parkway are best on clear days when the peaks are not covered by clouds, take the time to just cruise and stop at all the lookout points.
There are many hikes that are kid friendly as well. Some of our kids favorite are Toms Creek Falls, Bearwallow Mountain, and Lake Tomahawk.
Other places to check out with kids is the WNC Nature Center, Robert Lake Park, Hickory Nut Gap, and our favorite for adults and kids is Whistle Hop Brewery!
I could go on and on about places to check out! (There is a drawer full of pamphlets and information in the table behind the couch.) We are at a central location for any outdoor enthusiasts! There is so much to check out around the cabin that you will have to come again to see all that the area has to offer! (Plus, don't forget to check out the trails that are right within the Gateway Community!)
We hope you feel at home at our favorite place!

About the host
Hosted by Alex Hamilton
We are from Wisconsin. We bought our NC property in 2018 when our kids were just babies. We moved back to WI in 2022 to be near family and for our kids to start school. NC became our forever home though and we could not give up our place when we moved back. It's where our daughter took her first steps, we got our first dog, and fell in love with the mountains. It feels like home every time we return.
Why they chose this property
A job brought us to the Old Fort area. And it turned out to be the perfect location for us.
We have loved watching Old Fort develop. Every time we return there is something new coming to the area, whether its new trails, restaurants, or breweries. You are surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and parks to explore. And it's a short scenic ride to towns/cities like Black Mountain, Lake Lure, and Asheville. These surrounding areas are filled with art, history, and locally sourced food.

What makes this property unique
After looking at other properties, we knew as soon as we walked into the cabin that it was exactly what we were looking for and more.
A log cabin has a cozy, peaceful vibe. A crackling fireplace on rainy cold days. Swinging on the porch while taking in the view and enjoying a cup of tea. Waking in the morning to sunrays filling the house. Then preparing breakfast surrounded by loved ones.
Bonus! Its within walking distance to a lake and waterfall!
It brings the simplicity and tranquility that we needed in our life so that we could focus on our family and well being.
