About this property
Connecticut Colonial with River and Sunset Views!
Circa 1830 house located in the historic district of East Haddam Village which includes the Goodspeed Opera House and Landing, Gelston House and Restaurant, and the historic Swing Bridge. Enjoy views of the Connecticut River from the house and deck, cool breezes in summer, and acres of trees changing color in the fall. In winter a propane stove provides cozy comfort as you watch the snow come down. Theatre and great restaurants walking distance. Farmers markets, shopping, museums East Haddam itself as well as in many nearby quaint and historic villages including nearby Chester and Essex. Boating on the river, hikes on the home's 1.5 acres and adjacent wooded areas. Gillette Castle and Devil's Hopyard State Parks are also in East Haddam. Near the Long Island Shoreline with its beaches and seafood.
The home has original details throughout, including wide-plank wood floors, original glass in the windows, a dutch door in the kitchen leading out to a brick terrace, and traditional paint colors from the mid-1800's. Furnished with a mixture of some contemporary and many antique pieces that make it feel cozy and a step back in time. The views from almost every window are breathtaking - the wide Connecticut River to the front, and old-growth trees and limestone walls stretching up in the back to the cliffs above. Dishes, cookware, and silver are a combination of new and antique, with a blender, refrigerator in the eat-in kitchen, and a full size washer and dryer on the ground floor.

Along the way, you will pass gorgeous colonial-era homes, the local library, a cemetery established in the early 1700s, the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse, and amenities like Common Ground cafe, the Sweet Shop, the Gelston House restaurant, and the Goodspeed Opera House. A quick trip down Rt 9 brings you to the villages of Essex and Chester, which are known for their boutiques, restaurants, antique shops, and other amenities. Along with boating and hiking (and cross-country skiing in winter), the house provides easy access to swimming at the Moodus reservoir and Cedar Lake, and visits to Gillette Castle. East Haddam is located 20 minutes north of Old Saybrook and other shore towns, where there is public access to ocean beaches. 20 minutes to the north is Middletown and Wesleyan University.

About the host
Hosted by Lance Salonia
I stayed in this house as a guest through Vrbo several times before purchasing after learning it was up for sale! It's near where I was born and raised, and it's my retirement home in Connecticut. It's the kind of place I dreamed of as a kid. An old house with charm and views galore of the Connecticut River. The view out the back windows is equally nice as the property includes a rocky cliff and a nature preserve.
What makes this property unique
Staying at the property is like stepping back in time with all the colonials on this Main Street and the wide plank antique pine floors. The house is against a cliff and overlooks the Connecticut River and there are views from the house itself as well as the several levels of terraces in the back yard. The back yard and front and side are also gardened extensively. It's definitely a unique property.
