The Dove is our 80m² two bedroom vacation rental house. You enter into a double height hall with the living room/kitchen/dining through a door on your left, bathroom on your right and a glorious spiral staircase going up to the two bedrooms that are under the eaves.

The living room has a working enclosed fireplace and a clic-clak sofabed. The kitchen is fully equipped with a stove, two electric burners, refrigerator and freezer, microwave, dishwasher – everything you should need. The clothes washer and dryer are in a shared laundry on the property. You have a delightful gazebo and share the courtyard with the Skylark, our "troglogite".

Frankly, I never thought I'd end up living here but - you see, I met a man. On a ski trip - Alps - chalet - fireplace - well, it's been close to 30 years! I can't give you the complete insider's guide to France yet, (I believe that takes three generations) but I can give you an ex-New Yorker's guide to this fabulous Valley of Kings. We'd started in Paris, of course - our first studio was my husbands - that's where we lived once we decided to share a continent. We were there until our son was about negative-one-month old, and we didn't want to have to convert the bidet into a bassinet. Once we moved, I started renting out that apartment and everything fell into place. As an architect, I loved fixing up the apartments, and as an ex-pat, I loved meeting the people who come to enjoy their vacations in Paris. Now, we’ve made the move out to the Loire Valley. We've renovated two glorious properties here, creating several fabulous vacation homes, you’ve got to see the pictures. The locations are perfect for exploring the region – the chateaux, the wine, the scenery, it’s beautiful.

Why they chose this property

If you are looking to spend some time in the Loire Valley, this location is fabulous – you can walk to Chenonceau. There are multiple bicycle routes, and a canoe and bike rental place by the river Cher, a few minutes’ walk from our house; you can canoe right under Chenonceau! There are many castles in the area; you are close to Amboise and the wonderful museum at Clos Lucé, Leonardo da Vinci’s residence, which houses many of his experiments, designs and paintings. You’re in the heart of the Loire Valley wine region and a half-hour drive to Tours, to Beauval Zoo and many other castles, parks and places of interest.

What makes this property unique

We just fell in love with this property, our 'Songbird Sanctuary', as soon as we saw it. We had looked at a number of perfectly nice properties – mostly ‘longere’, which are typical of the region – a long rectangle on a flat lawn. They are often lovely but… for me, lacking in a certain spark of individuality. This was completely different. Set up on three levels, with the potential for all kinds of interesting living spaces, connections and privacy.

The place is beautifully quiet, however there is a train track that passes right behind the houses on the other side of the road. We are a bit shielded from that, since the gites are on the courtyards up on the second level, not directly facing the street. There is no visual connection but you will be aware of the occasional train when it goes by.

We also have another property, our ‘Clos Lussault’ right near Amboise, which is also full of connecting passages, caves and fascinating spaces, a glorious maze of possibilities! As an architect, I love creating these unique and beautiful vacation rental homes – especially the majestic spaces and challenges of renovating the caves ;-) . And as an ex-pat, I love meeting the people who come to enjoy their vacations here. I do hope to get to meet you soon!
