About this property

Waterside cottage in a magical setting on the Salcombe Estuary (sleeps 6)

Pipers Cottage is a beautiful rustic creekside property, perfectly positioned in a picture postcard setting on the west side of the Salcombe/Kingsbridge Estuary. It is only a 2 minute drive from the pretty waterside town of Kingsbridge with its many shops, pubs and restaurants and just a 5 minute drive from fashionable Salcombe with its fabulous golden beaches. For the slightly more adventurous both Salcombe/East Portlemouth and Kingsbridge can be accessed by boat or kayak from the front of the cottage!
In addition, the cottage is really well positioned in the South Hams to access, not only the beaches of Salcombe, but many more favourites such as Bantham, Bigbury, Thurlestone, South Milton all approximately a 10 minute drive from the cottage door.
Historic Dartmouth is just a short drive in the opposite direction along what must be one of the most spectacular coastal routes in the country, with many more fabulous beaches en route, including, Beesands, Slapton and the award winning Blackpool Sands.
However if you do not want to venture far from the cottage there are enough things to do around the property to keep adults and children happy for days: Relax on the loungers on the sun drenched terrace; Sit on the Jetty with a coffee or a glass of wine watching the kids play in the creek and if you're lucky spot the resident Kingfishers fishing as the tide slowly comes in bringing with it our friendly pair of swans. At low tide it is possible to walk a fair distance along the creek on the shingle bed (avoid the mud) and see the clam beds and a huge variety of birdlife feeding on small crabs and shellfish. Finally, a rowing boat (4.4 meters) and two kayaks are available on request; great for pottering around on the creek at high tide. Please note that because of the steps leading up to the property our cottage may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.

Beautiful cottage, mid terrace in a row of cottages next to a creek. Idyllic quiet location a few minutes drive down country lanes to Kingsbridge. The property is well equipped and nicely presented. The hosts were very responsive with replying to any questions and welcoming. We had a lovely stay at Piper’s cottage !

We enjoyed a very relaxing stay with our family in this beautiful property, made all the more enjoyable due to the wonderful sunshine. We particularly enjoyed having use of the rowing boats and kayaks for a fun paddle, from the bottom of the garden, when the tide was high and eating out on the patio. Everything was clean and comfortable in the cottage. There is lots of beautiful places to explore near by but we always enjoyed coming back to the peaceful surroundings of Pipers cottage.Thank you Rob and Sian for being great hosts.

Had a fabulous week staying in Piper Cottage, extremely comfortable and clean accommodation with the bonus of a lovely terrace and proximity to the creek. Beautiful part of the world, would definitely stay again.

We enjoyed our week staying at Pipers, which is in a delightful and peaceful setting and furnished with taste and quality. It is well placed to visit the South Hams district: Salcombe, Kingsbridge, Dartmouth plus all the surrounding coastline. You definitely need a car to make the most of the location and be prepared to reverse very frequently in the narrow lanes. The owners kept good contact but were not intrusive.

Peaceful creekside cottage. Owners Rob and Sian very helpful and responded immediately to any queries we had. Kitchen very well equipped. Comfy beds. We ate our meals on terrace in front of cottage every evening when the weather allowed. Well located for local beaches, Hope Cove, Bigbury on sea, Salcombe all within easy reach, although the very narrow lanes can be somewhat hair raising when having to reverse to allow other traffic to pass!

Pipers cottage

Wonderfully located on a tidal creek, very quiet and picturesque surroundings close to the town of Kingsbridge. Owner has a rowing boat which is available for use moored at the property. Fantastic!

We stayed in kingsbridge in July with our parents and two young children. I wouldn’t recommend the house for two young kids as there are a lot of hazards for stumbling toddlers. The cot bed provided was broken and rather dusty. The neighbours dog also joyfully did a poo everyday right next to our car, so we had the morning ritual of dodge the poo. The parking for two cars is a little ridiculous being super tight, we were almost in the creek. In the heat we often had the doors open, but we did see a lot of mice in the garden, so we’re worried they would come in the house and be near the children. We were also informed that the water may run out due to a recent drought and had to wait 30 mins between showers. This put us on edge the whole week, so we couldn’t have a relaxing shower or long bath. The house was a little tricky to get to and generally this part of Devon is difficult to navigate on the single track roads, so wouldn’t recommend it for those with bigger cars or used to bigger roads. Overall, we enjoyed our trips to the beautiful beaches and great commincation with the owners and holiday letting company, but the house was a little tricky for our set up.

A Very Special Cottage

Pipers Cottage is a delightful holiday property. The cottage is perfect and the location idyllic. The quality of accommodation is excellent, well equipped and with a lovely terrace and garden. The opportunity to use a rowboat on the creek was a real treat. We have been renting holiday properties for over 30 years, going back to the pre internet days of the Lady! This is easily one of the best we have ever stayed in.

Lovely getaway in a beautiful setting

Pipers Cottage was perfect for us - 8 people (4 adults and 4 children) and the accommodation was so well suited to our needs. The beds were super comfortable - we all slept soundly each night in our bedrooms and the downstairs was also very spacious. But the highlight was the use of the boat and kayaks when the tide came in the Creek. Rob and Sian (the owners) were so kind and thoughtful during our stay and even offered us a free extra night at the end of our week long rental and a late checkout (knowing how logistically tricky it can be to leave at 10am with children!) Thank you so much Rob and Sian.I cannot recommend Pipers Cottage more - the location and aspect are really special.

Most wonderful cottage holiday

Everything was simply perfect. It all started with our outstanding landlords Rob and Sian, who were so warm, welcoming, easy to contact and gave so many helpful recommendations. We loved Pipers Cottage and the surrounding landscape from the very beginning. The cottage is decorated in such a homely way and well equipped, especially the kitchen. Due to the weather, we didn't see many beaches but found many other wonderful things to do for example we enjoyed our walks to Salcombe. Thank you again for everything!

Disappointing

Communication with the owners was excellent. Unfortunately several of our group have mobility issues and accessing the property was very difficult. The property information indicated that you accessed the property via steps but they are very steep with no handrail

Great little property in a lovely area of Devon

The location here is beautiful and so quiet (except for the occasional farming). You can hear the birds all the time (and I don't mean annoying seagulls). It's a lovely atmosphere. Lots of room in the house, although the stairs are pretty tight for old people (we took our elderly parents). The house was very musty when we first arrived and we had to ventilate it for 2 days before the smell went, but apparently we were the first people to have rented this in 9 months. It seemed find after that, but if you are sensitive to this then it may affect you. I was dosed on large amounts of antihistamines every night. The beaches nearby (all within 30-60 minutes of driving down very tight lanes). Almost all beaches have dogs, so you have to work to avoid them. Beautiful part of the country though.

Response from VrboOwner on 5 May, 2025
We found out later that there had been a gradual water leak from the immersion heater in the upstairs bathroom into the ceiling of the playroom which eventually led to the ceiling collapsing. This accounted for the smell. The leak has been cured, ceiling has now been replaced and new carpets fitted. Consequently the smell is no longer there.

A blissfully quiet retreat

Beautiful home in an amazing location. Well equipped and cosy house with super comfy beds, well equipped kitchen and plenty of entertaining space. The terrace is a fantastic place to relax and enjoy the wonderful views, the children loved roaming in the back garden picking blackberries and crabbing in the creek. A truly relaxing stay, we loved it.

Beautiful Devon country cottage five minutes from Kingsbridge

Spent a gorgeous week at this spacious cottage with family in June. The property is in great decorative order, the bedrooms are cosy and quiet, and the terrace to the front is a wonderful evening suntrap to unwind on a summers evening. Beaches, towns and amenities all within a short drive.

Wonderful stay!

We had the most wonderful week at the cottage. Beautiful peaceful setting but so close to Salcombe. The children loved crabbing off the boat in the mornings and after dinner, we loved sitting outside drinking gin and tonics! Everything was perfect and utterly charming, so excited to stay again in the Summer.

Amazing creek side family cottage, close to local amenities and very well appointed for a family holiday with small children. The owners were incredibly helpful and easily contactable, adding personal recommendations for the local area. Our older children loved crab fishing off the bridge and jetty.

We are a family of five. We bought the property after we fell in love with area and couldn't believe our luck when we found a rare waterside property next to a pretty hump back bridge just off the old coaching road between Salcombe (our favourite place ever) and pretty Kingsbridge. The property needed quite a lot of renovation when we bought it and now finally it's just how we had imagined it could be when we first saw it all those years ago. We have never let the property before as we have never had a desire to go anywhere else as it's so beautiful. However, as the children are getting older and want to go abroad we have decided to share the property so that others can enjoy it as much as we do

Why they chose this property

Because of its fantastic location and position on the water it feels as if the Estuary is even part of your own garden.
It is also central to the most fantastic beaches, lovely coastal walks and boating towns with many great restaurants and pubs. Therefore you not only have the serenity of the location but also the buzz of very trendy and upscale Salcombe and popular Kingsbridge just a stone's throw away.

What makes this property unique

With a slipway nearby, this is a great place to enjoy a water sport based holiday; or a place to just relax and enjoy the natural beauty and peacefullness of the stunning surroundings.
A great place for both families, with all the space and activities right there, or for couples wanting a quiet peaceful holiday with kayaking and walking from your own doorstep.
