About this property
Sunrise Cabin Lake Nahwatzel Stocked Lake 2Bd/1Bth
We are delighted to welcome you to Sunrise Cabin at beautiful Lake Nahwatzel in Mason County, Washington! We are thrilled to host you and offer a peaceful escape from everyday stress and the hustle of congested traffic! Sunrise cabin is, however, close enough for you to easily enjoy some of Seattle's special events. Seattle is approximately 90 minutes away by car, making day trips into the city convenient for our guests. For example, Seattle's Lumen Field will host World Cup Soccer from June 15 through July 6, 2026!
Lake Nahwatzel is a unique gem nestled at the base of the Olympic Mountains' foothills. The Lake is located in the middle of vast timberlands on the edge of the Olympic National Forest and was integral to the early days of logging. We who are lucky enough to live here feel blessed that our piece of paradise is far enough from the bustle of the state capital, Olympia, yet close enough to take advantage of the many amenities available in the more urban areas.
Lake Nahwatzel is home to eagles and osprey, deer and elk, beavers and otters, and everything in between. Though summer is the time most people think of summer activities like swimming, kayaking, and fishing, winter has its own charm when the swans, shorebirds, and other migrating birds arrive. Winter is quiet, serene, and peaceful; you can imagine the rest of the world no longer exists. In the spring, if you are lucky, you will hear the haunting call of the loon.
Nahwatzel Lake is open year-round for fishing, and is stocked each spring and fall exclusively with larger rainbow trout averaging a pound apiece. But it also receives even larger rainbows from 3 to 8 pounds each, making it a great destination for quality trout fishing in Mason County.
This is the latest stocking report: October 7, 2025, 300 Rainbow @ 1.79lbs September 30, 2025, 605 Rainbow @ 1.79lbs September 30, 2025, 95 Rainbow @ 7.14lbs September 22, 2025, 2000 Rainbow @ 1.08lbs
This cabin includes the use of a fishing canoe and kayaks; upon request, fishing gear is also available. A fishing license is easily obtained locally, and you can launch or fish from your own private dock!
Inside, you will find a fully-equipped kitchen with modern appliances, cookware, and dinnerware provided, making it easy to prepare meals during your stay. We offer complimentary Wi-Fi so you can stay connected as needed. Fresh linens and towels are supplied for your comfort. The cabin is heated and cooled for year-round comfort, ensuring a cozy retreat no matter the season. Other thoughtful amenities include a washer and dryer, coffee maker, and basic toiletries for your convenience.
We are extra fortunate, because we are the last house at the end of the road, and nothing and no one is beyond us for many miles. If you are looking for solitude or fun on the water, look here! Read a book, take out a canoe, plunk a fishing lure into the water off the cabin's private pier, or explore the many sights of the Olympic Peninsula, using this as a starting or stopping point. You can take the ferry to Seattle, visit Mt. Rainier, discover our state capital, or snuggle in and hide from the world. For dining out, there are several local favorites nearby. The Alderbrook Resort & Restaurant in Union, WA, is a popular spot for waterfront dining and delicious Northwest cuisine. Blondies in Shelton is a great choice for casual meals and family-friendly fare, and Leonard K's Boat House, 18 miles north of Shelton, serves up hearty dishes on the water. For groceries and essentials, Safeway and Fred Meyer in Shelton offer everything you need. If you're looking for a fun excursion, try the famous Olympic Bakery & Deli for pastries and sandwiches. Families often enjoy visiting the nearby Ridge Motorsports Park for go-karting and events, Vance Creek Railriders for interactive fun, or the Hood Canal for hiking and wildlife viewing. We are happy to provide more recommendations tailored to your interests!

About the host
Hosted by Heather Buono
I know you are thinking you get to know about Heather here, but I'm just the owners liason. This cabin is a generational family home and is all about the owners that live next door. Betsy and Dave were career high school teachers, Betsy in Business and Technology; and Dave in Automotive Technology. They are inveterate outdoors people and share a love of the natural world. Since retiring, travel has been a big part of their life: Africa (four times), England, Galapagos Islands, and, hopefully, New Zealand and the Cook Islands. Maui is one of their favorite places, and they go there for several weeks every winter.
Life would not be worth living without pets, so their home is filled with busy feet and lots of laughter at their pets, Tug and Badger and Kiki. A real bonus for Betsy and Dave is that the Lake Nahwatzel property was large enough to be divided between brother and sister, so the neighbors are also family and loved ones.
Being astonished at somehow finding themselves in their golden years, Betsy and Dave are avid fitness buffs, hoping to be able to live life as fully as possible for as long as possible.
Why they chose this property
Betsy grew up spending her summers at Lake Nahwatzel, which then was very lightly touched by human footprint. Her father was a Weyerhaeuser forester, who discovered the lake while cruising timber for the company in the 1940's. Long-time early residents at the lake urged her dad and mom to buy the piece of property and its funny little cabin to protect it from a planned resort and loaned them the money to do so. Betsy and her brother had a childhood filled with tramping through the woods, swimming, water skiing, and generally being little heathens at this wondrous place. Betsy's parents built a new cabin in 1970, and it later became their retirement home. It's a perfect little house. When Betsy and Dave decided to retire from teaching (38 years in the high school was enough, finally), in nearby Lacey, they sold their home in Olympia and built a new one at The Lake. But that "perfect little house" just sat there, right down on the water at the edge of the lake, watching the beavers and otters, eagles and osprey, fishermen, and cruisers go by with no one to enjoy it. It had been the site of so much joy and fun and family over the years, it was sad for Betsy and Dave. So they decided it needed to be shared. And, voila!, with much renovation it now is Sunrise Cabin at Lake Nahwatzel and is once again the place of joy and fun and families.
What makes this property unique
We call the cabin Sunrise Cabin for a very good reason: every morning is a unique direct view of the morning's sunrise against the backdrop of the lake! Some mornings may be misty and some clear as a bell, but I find waking up at Lake Nahwatzel to be a fabulous start to the day! Lake Nahwatzel has quite a history: It began as a log-holding area for the Simpson Timber Company and is nestled in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. Thankfully, it is far enough away from civilization that it hasn't been overdeveloped, and you can kayak along the north shore and watch for eagles, kingfishers, beavers, otters, etc. It's busy in the summer, but winter has its own benefits: the lake is a sanctuary for migrating waterfowl such as swans, Canada and Snow Geese, mergansers, loons, and many others. The cabin has a propane "woodstove" that turns the summer retreat into a winter cocoon, still with that amazing view of being right down on the water's edge. The cabin in winter becomes the perfect woodsy retreat to regenerate oneself. If conditions permit, there is a propane fire pit on the lawn. We also provide fishing gear on request. The lake is regularly stocked with trout.
